Fun but totally delivers the wrong message to kids about Chanukah

I love videos and happy ‘pumping” music, however it really makes me sad when there is an opportunity to deliver learning and meaning and then all you end up with is “a puppy for Hanukkah?!

Not everything needs to be educational

Christian children have a ton of music for Christmas. It is nice that Jewish kids get the same. Have you ever done something just for fun or does everything have to have learning?

yes, it's fun, but...

I agree that it's a fun and even adorable video, but I wouldn't show it to my grandkids because the message of "puppy for Chanukah" is the antithesis of the Chanukah festival.

What do we celebrate on Chanukah? That the Jews of the time resisted Hellenisation, the attempt of a dominant foreign culture - and of Hellenist-Jewish collaborators - to adulterate Torah and Jewish practice.

"Puppy for Chanukah" rests on the premise that Chanukah and Xmas are essentially equivalent, albeit with Chanukah coming out on top because the presents last for 8 days instead of 1. But the American Jewish custom of 8 nights of presents is modern-day "Hellenisation". It's changing the focus and practice of the Chanukah celebration to align with a foreign dominant culture.

There are plenty of fun Chanuakah videos with happy pumping music and new ones come out each year. Let's stick to those.

I agree with Judith

I agree with Judith and they can still have fun. so how about the little girl holding her puppy and singing, with the same tune, "I'm Jewish 'cause of Chanukah. We won the war with the Greeks on Chanukah. Gd made us a big miracle and our lights are burning bright on Chanukah and I'll always do what"s right and I love Him with all my might and thank Him every night on Chanukah." Or something like that. They could have even put a Menorah in the background. And YES, Stephanie, everything has to be educational.

or at least inspirational

If not for learning, then at least it should be inspirational. Otherwise everything goes right by and it's such a waste and such a shame to miss out on these beautiful days, when Gd is pouring His love down on us and we won't even be aware of what is happening and what happened in those days. Why should we miss out on this?

Did you hear that just this week the police were searching for stolen goods in a particular Arab's house in the Old City, and what did they find? Amongst other items, a coin from the time of Chanukah, plus a seal and a candle made of olive oil from that time. Every year around or on Chanukah, they find such discoveries.
So we hear H-shem saying to us, "Yes, I was there then and I'm here now".

Hits home

Years ago, my dad brought home 2 puppies for Hanukkah. Completely unexpected! Best Hanukkah gift ever!
