MOTIVATION May be MOTIVATED by DISCOMFORT, First?

Dear Rabbi Cohen, Thanks for this inspiring story.

A thought came to me, today, about MOTIVATION.
How can be become more motivated to pursue our mission in life?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps one of the keys to motivation is actually: DISCOMFORT.
Yes, if we are too comfortable, and satisfied, it may be hard to be moved to act.
Action is uncomfortable, since it requires ongoing effort and uncertainty.

(In Ft. Myers, Florida there is an EASY Street, which intersects, a LAZY Way.
But near Chicago, there is an EASY Street which intersects, a COMFORT Street.)

In thinking about Chanukah, today, I suddenly made a connection between,
MOTIVATION and DISCOMFORT. The Jews fought hard and long, but when
they found the Menorah, they insisted on using only the pure oil.

The result was that the oil kept the Menorah lit for 8 days, It persisted.
And that is what we have to do, persist, by getting out of our COMFORT zone!

THANKS so Much Harry www.SavingSchool.org

Military Victory or Spiritual Miracle?

Great message. Such an appropriate moshul. What a powerful post-war story. Undoubtedly every aspect of this piece will inspire countless individuals to take on more and hopefully experience their own Chanukah miracle.

However, I am unaware of any source to the statement that the Macabees were untrained and malnourished. I am unaware that their military victory cannot be attributed to great strategies. I was under the impression that the real lesson of Chanukah was that in spite of the all pervasive Greek culture which influenced the vast majority of the people under Syrian-Greek rule, the Jews, many of them, sacrificed their lives to circumcise, to keep Sabbath, the learn Torah, etc. That the few, "backwards" and uncivilized Jews refused to bow to what the new-age society had to offer them, was the true "rabim b'yad mi'atim."
