This teen got sick and tired of being home sick. Here are some of her do it yourself self-entertainment tips.

I woke up Friday morning with a 103 degree fever and a cough that woke me up before my six-thirty alarm. I have not had a fever since probably second grade, and being sick as a sixteen year old is quite different than being sick as a child. For one, when you are a sick kid, you have your mother bringing you food in bed and handing you game after toy after game in case God forbid you should become bored.

Also, if you miss school as an eight year old, chances are you will only miss the math lesson on how to multiply by fives and the next chapter in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. If you miss a school day in eleventh grade like me, you have missed a chapter in chemistry, a portion of Torah, three quizzes, one test, one pop test, and a math lesson on conics. So being sick as a teen is just plain unpractical.

At home, pacing back and forth time and time again, there is no question that some sort of entertainment is needed, and there is nothing like some kosher entertainment for today's sick and weary teenager. Here are some sick, flu-themed do it yourself crafts to make your lonely day at home an exciting day off:

1. Hachoo Tissue Puppets

What you need:

  • Tissues. (Make sure none of them have been used.)
  • Ribbon (Any color)
  • Markers
  • Sequins, buttons, glitter glue, puffy paint (optional)
  • Glue or tape, whatever gets the job done.

Method:

  • Take the tissue, bunch it up in the middle, and tie it tightly together with an appropriately sized ribbon. Draw a face (No artistic talent needed! A smiley face will do) out of markers. Decorate as you wish.

2. 103 Thermometer Karaoke

What you need:

  • A thermometer (Like the kind that checks a person's temperature, not your Yom Tov roast)
  • A sheet of your favorite song's lyrics
  • Your favorite CD/MP3 (It's your favorite because it has your favorite song.)

Method:

  • Put on some makeup and a fun colored scarf. Using your thermometer as a microphone, turn on your music and sing along to the song using the printed lyrics as a guide.

3. Cough Drop Maracas

What you need:

  • A bag of cough drops. Any flavor will be just fine, though I prefer honey flavored.
  • Plastic cups
  • Tinfoil
  • Tape
  • Leftover decorating material from the tissue puppets. (See number 1)

Method:

  • Take a handful of cough drops still in their wrappers, and dump into a plastic cup. Cover the mouth of the cup snugly with tinfoil and secure shut with tape or ribbon. Decorate to suit your own taste.*

*These can be used as graggers on Purim

4. Pill Stamps

What you need:

  • Empty pill bottles
  • Paper
  • Paint

Method:

  • Separate the lid from the empty pill bottle. Pour paint onto a plate. Take the bottom of the pill bottle and dip it lightly into the paint. Stamp the wet side onto the paper. Fill the paper with as many circles as you wish. To make an inverted circle, use the top of the pill bottle.

5. Lemon Tea Scented Lined Paper*

Tired of using boring lined paper for quizzes and homework? This lemon-tea scented paper will be the envy of all your peers!

What you need:

  • Freshly boiled tea with freshly squeezed lemon
  • Your favorite lined paper
  • Big brush

Method:

  • Brush your lined paper lightly with the tea. Make sure to properly dry before taking it with you to school. (You might have to refrigerate the paper. I'm not sure.)

*Roll up a lemon-tea scented paper and tie with a ribbon as a pretty smelling gift for a teacher or a friend!

Anyway, I've used up all the lemon-tea scented paper I have, so I'm afraid I have to start wrapping this article up. I have to boil up another fresh pot of tea. I have a ton of quizzes and homework to catch up on tomorrow, and I'll need as much lemon-tea scented paper as I can make.
