Have a sense of humor people! My kids and I watch it and can sooo identify. I'm polite, not so bad, but I am very much on top of as much as possible that's going on with my kids. The show help kids see their actions from a parents view point, and parents remember what certain stuff felt like from a kids view point. And the episode shown above points out the view points from both parents and teachers. It's a great show.

timeless

In 1967 I left teaching because it wasn't for me. But I'll never forget Parent-teacher conference night, when Helene's mother came in to see me. Geometry wasn't Helene's best subject. Her mother proceeded to tell me I was lucky to have a job with so much time off. Oh and how she was friends with the chairman of the Math department. Glad I left teaching.

Wow. What a difference one generation can make, for better or worse.

When I was young & watching TV in the USA of the 60s, 70 and 80s, parents were smart, teachers were smarter, and Jewish teachers were funny and extra-smart. For example, Mr. Kotter was hilarious, humble and always one step ahead of the students who so needed him.

This video seems almost typical of today's TV. Smart children are embarrassed by foolish mothers with no manners and helpless fathers who offer no leadership in front of incompetent, subservient teachers that no child could respect.

Maybe Jewlarious ought to help fix the problem by using this space to bring back those very funny TV episodes that nurtured my respect for parents, teachers and in the long run, myself.

This vignette is a rather unrealistic portrayal of the power of parents to have a teacher dismissed, or to even change a curriculum now or in the 80's. That said, I do not think that Jews 'helicopter parent' more so than other ethnic groups.
