this was at the beginning of WWII, and the universalist, socialist setntiment- erase all borders, etc. was the socialist bent. Behind which of course was Stalin, and all that tyranny. All those sweet thunderous words, urging to erase national borders.... what happened then as well as the push now to 'erase national borders with the urging to follow the false utopians who yes, would erase Israel or rather, just give it to the whole world- to be ruled by arabs locally. This is what it means. Loving humanity, then, is not achieved by Chaplins seemingly glorious enunciations. The socialism thereafter showed some true tyranny, true suffering for freedom. But he believed his words and meant what he said: but his political understanding was dead wrong.

The scene still resonates beautifully, even today.

His hopeful words rang true in 1940, and are still words to live by and aspire to in 2020.
But sadly, just like in 1940, man is still largely inhumane to other men in 2020.
