This week we commemorate the 67th anniversary of the birth of the modern day state of Israel. This momentous event almost didn’t take place without very special divine intervention.
At the time almost no one knew the story. It was not until much later that the secret correspondence between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Saudi King surfaced. But now we know what transpired behind the scene that would surely have derailed recognition of Israel as a member state of the United Nations – and we can once again stand in awe of the mysterious ways in which God plays a role in directing the turning points of history.
I have just now become privileged to see copies of the original letters between Abdul Aziz bin Abdur Rahman al Faisal al Saud and the then president of the United States. It was in March 1945 that the Saudi King, aware of the imminent end of the Second World War, wrote to FDR of his fear that the Jewish remnant of the Holocaust might push for a return to their ancient homeland of Palestine. Saud was particularly concerned that there might be some American support for this on humanitarian grounds, especially in light of the revelations about the extent of Jewish suffering.
The Saudi King was undiplomatically direct in his opposition to this possibility:
“This right [of the Arabs] men now seek to destroy by injustice unparalleled and unequaled in history. Such is the right of the Arabs in Palestine which the spokesmen of Jewish Zionism wish to scorn and abolish by the use of various forms of lying propaganda, invented, concealed and employed by them throughout the world.… They are preparing to create a form of Nazi fascism within sight and hearing of the democracies and in the midst of the Arab countries as well as in their very heart and in the heart of the East which has proved itself loyal to the Allied cause in these critical times….. We state frankly and plainly that to help Zionism in Palestine not only means to endanger Palestine but all neighboring countries.”
Leaving aside the incredible reference to the Arab world having proven itself “loyal to the Allied cause” in spite of its powerful links to Hitler and the Nazis, the Saudi King seemed quite confident he would secure a positive response from FDR which would make the creation of a Jewish state impossible.
In fact he was not disappointed.
On April 5, FDR responded with an extremely warm note. In it he offered the king a firm commitment.
“Your Majesty will doubtless recall that on previous occasions I communicated to you that I would take no action in my capacity as chief of the executive branch of this government which might prove hostile to the Arab people.”
As long as he continued to serve as President, he made clear that the dream of the Jewish people of return to their homeland would not be fulfilled. Those were his words.
It was on April 12, a mere seven days after the date of FDR’s commitment to the Saudi King, that FDR passed away.
America mourned mightily at the death of their leader who had guided them through the previous years of horror. Jews, as grateful citizens of a land that had offered them so many blessings, were in the forefront of those overwhelmed by grief. We can now see divine fingerprints in the replacement of FDR with Harry S Truman, a man who previously enjoyed a friendly business relationship with a Jew and found himself in the unique position of being able to make possible the creation of the state of Israel which his predecessor pledged never to allow.
It seems miracles have always played a major role in the unparalleled story of a people returning to their homeland after a hiatus of close to 2000 years. But it was not only the miracles which allowed Israel to survive the attacks of its many enemies, far superior in number, in armaments, in wealth and in friends amongst the nations of the world. No rational historian, no realistic military analyst, no cogent political commentator could possibly have predicted that after 67 years of attempts at its annihilation, Israel still stands proud and tall, secure in its achievements and confident of its continued survival.
Israel’s development through its teenage years, its growth to maturity and its present day place in the world as a technological wonder all bear the signs of divine and miraculous assistance. However this year, now that we know the full story, let us add our recognition of the miracle which made possible Israel’s birth as well.

Its hard to believe in Miracles, but things do happen without explanation.
I think the USA voted yes at the United Nations, fearing that the Soviets will be the first to do so and Israel will be under Soviet domination. Let us face it, many Americans at the Foreign Office were against the creation of the State of Israel, Even today, there are many who would vote against Israel and stop supporting it.
We will wait and see what happens under Biden-Harris administration. Steve Acre

Not a friend and a new (?) friend
Roosevelt when he was a journalist/editorialist for a Southern paper in Georgia wrote an editorial supporting racial limits to immigration to the US. Not only did he not favor Jewish and SE Europeans immigrating to the US, but he expressed support for strict limits in numbers and encouraged the merging of Jews of those already here into the racial melting pot by restricting where they could live. In contrast, Saudi Arabia comes as a would be ally seeking the support of Israel in its struggles with Iran and the Shiite world.

FDR No Friend
Liberals love FDR and refuse to understand that the only friend Israel has is Hashem. It was a swift judgement FDR died only 7 days after his attack on Israel. May all our enemies receive similar punishment. Today the US president is also a Liberal and look how he acts toward Israel. Before time runs out Jews in the US need to wake up and return to the Land given to us by Hashem. We have suffered for 1000's of years because we refused to heed the message from Hashem to return.

WELL SAID MOSHE.
Our dear brother Moshe said it all, FDR had no use for the Jews of Israel and Europe. We should all thank the Almighty for saving Isreal when Harry Truman took over the white House. The liberals truly love FDR and his good friend during WW II,, "Uncle Joe Stalin." who also hated the Soviet Jews. FDR allowed the bombing of Pearl harbor to happen after being aware weeks before of the future attack thatt led us into war with Japan.
Our next President will be a good friend of the great state of Israel and things will change. G-d will protect Israel until then. The truth about FDR is coming out and way after millions died in death camps in Europe. FDR knew the fate the Jews in Europe were facing.
I can see a bright future for Israel and the great USA. Israel will survive, why ? Because the Almighty says it shall !!
G-d bless Israel, all Jews of the world, and us Americans that love Israel and its people.,
G-d' blessing on the great staff at AISH who are truly G-d' gift to all it' readers, they report so many great article' that we could never find anywhere else.
Thanks you too Moshe for your great insight.

The ship that FDR sunk...........
Wasn't FDR the one who refused a ship of Jewish refugees to come to America, and was sunk by a German Uboat on its return heading to Europe????
I'm a World War 2 vet and seem to remember that event quite clearly in my mind. He never was really a friend of the Jewish people.

What!!! UNFATHOMABLE IS ANY Unclarity for Survivors of 6 MILLION Murdered
Have some become so Dull in the compassion they hope to have from others that IN the FACE of a 6 MILLION GENOCIDE...the shreds of humanity left in them - Can't Witness the wrongs of not saving the survivors, or protecting them. The problem is not only with what WASN"T DONE - it's with those of us who would Do Nothing for others (Jews, Armenians -their Genocide, Rwandans, Sudanese, Bosnians, Thai, ....and Ultimately Themselves - with no one left to help their pitiful souls. My God....Wake Up ....

My Heart Can't HANDLE This
Does anyone not hate the Jews? I am victim of antisemitism and it is destroying my faith in so many people. I don't want to feel this way anymore. What scares me the most is some people just don't care. G-d help us.
Sharon Buckland, May 3, 2015 6:07 AM
I don't hate Jews, Gary
There are many people around the world who don't hate Jews, Gary. I am a Christian and a huge number of us recognise that Jews are still G-d's Chosen People. I, and many others, do our best to fight antisemitism and to reveal the truth behind the awful anti-Israel propaganda in our media. This is one of the reasons why I read Aish and keep in touch with those living in Israel who can give us the truth.

A Miracle
A miracles is to have the 6 million Jews and 20 million dead Soviets back . A miracle would be a free an independent Palestine with indigenous Jews , Muslims , Christians and anyone willing to pledge allegiance to the nation . A miracle would an Israel's without enemies .
Let's dream really big when we wish for miracles. PEACE

FDR was no fool
FDR had a spiritual advisor, friend and long associate Thomas Sugrue he wrote seven books, including Starling of the White House, with and for Edmund Starling, the man who protected all U.S. presidents from Woodrow Wilson to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, hosted a New York City radio show Conversations at Eight, and explored the nation of Israel. When you must appease the devil side, having your friends carry out the other is called diplomacy. FDR was far more deep than to be besmirch with innuendo. G-d knows Rabbi is it not done enough to all of us today, don't join and cover what on the surface is a fragment of the man's mind

a miracle?
I wonder whether the Japanese consider it a positive miracle and share our gratitude (and I am grateful) for FDR's replacement by Truman?

A Tendentious argument
This commentary is a peculiar interpretation of history that I find offensive. It assumes to know what FDR would have done, with no basis for this assumption.
FDR's comment to the Saudi king is a general one, and does not indicate that he would have opposed the creation of the state of Israel. It is diplomatically vague.
"I would take no action in my capacity as chief of the executive branch of this government which might prove hostile to the Arab people.”
Jaydover, April 24, 2015 11:53 PM
Americans are a gullible people
President Roosevelt showed his true feelings when he sent the boat load of Jews back to the ovens of auswitch in Poland. To prove a point I ask myself how can a president intern in a concentration camp Americans who were born in the USA and loved America

FDR AND THE JEWS; ULTIMATELY A SAVIOR
FDR/ JEWISH CONCLUSIONS ARE VERY COMPLEX; SOME BAD DECISIONS, SOME GOOD BY FDR.
HOWEVER, BY GOING TO WAR IN EUROPE AS THE FIRST PRIORITY, INSTEAD OF THE PACIFIC; MILLIONS OF JEWS WERE 'SAVED'. THIS CANNOT BE DENIED.

something more to think about
scott - true the us has had some input but in truth Australia has been a guiding force for the existence of Israel since the first world war.
it was Australia (the light horse regiment on october 31, 1915) that enabled Israel to dream of establishing herself as a sovereign nation.
the light horse charged the turks at beersheva thus capturing vital wells that saved not only the british but was the pivotal moment that began israels march to nationhood. the light horse then went on to capture damascus and accept the surrender - it was NOT Lawrence of Arabia. he came in two hours after the Australians accepted the surrender
Australia was also a guiding hand behind the acceptance of israels claim to nationhood in 1948.
Australia and Israel are forever entwined in brotherhood - god used the youngest nation on earth to save the oldest nation on earth. there is a monument to then light horse in beersheva as well as a graveyard

you sure?
Is it possible that FDR wasn't feeling well, and his response simply said "as long as I'm alive" not to worry. LOL

miracles do not jump out at you... they grow like seedlings
Miracles do not knock at your door and ask permission for entry. They inch their way toward the light and we accept them as blind faith. We must believe in fate and act upon the narrow path provided by its beam.

FDR Covertly Acted Against the Jewish Community During WWII
FDR had a rancid history where the Jewish community in the USA and Europe were concerned . He deliberately kept immigration quotas 10% below what was statutorally possible . He strenuously resisted attempts to increase them . Remember the voyage of the St Louis ['Voyage of the Damned'] ? With a stroke of the presidential pen , he could have saved everyone on that ship . He refused to allow the bombing of railway lines to the concentration camps . His administration actively discouraged Jewish leadership in America from organising rescue efforts for Jewish communities in Europe . I think he meant every word of his letter to King Saud .

something to think about
I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. It rings true throughout history.
I hear Americans, even american Jews tell me that Israel owes its existence to the help of the united states. Maybe from an atheistic point of view.
I think its a chicken and egg thing.
At the signing of the constitution there was a table of kosher food provided. Jews, probably for the first time in western history, were included in the establishment of a nation. A nation that, while certainly not pro-jewish was at least creating the idea that Jews among people of other non majority actually had rights and could not be institutionally persecuted for their faith and culture. The us started with a blessing on G*D's people and worked its way from an insignificant and poor country to the dominant power in the world hand in hand with its progress on religious freedom for Jews. The more they blessed us they were blessed. The very struggle to destroy amalek in WWII left them as the center of the western world-even if that's not really why they fought.
During its postwar ascendency the us became the capital of diaspora Jewry while its greatest enemy persecuted Jews. And Europe, the outright collaborators with Nazis, faded in importance.
Maybe I'm a religious nut job but perhaps the us should thank us for giving them the opportunity to be the first in line to provide us with continued blessings as a supporter of Israel.
Perhaps like FDR might have learned the hard way they should be afraid if what happens should those blessings ever turn to curses.

Rav Kook's comments
Scott,
You are exactly right. After the signing of the Balfour Declaration, all the Jews fell over themselves to thank the British for their wonderful gererosity. R Kook stood up and said: “I have not come here to thank the British nation, but even more, to congratulate it for the privilege of making this declaration. The Jewish nation is the ‘scholar’ among the nations, the ‘people of the book,’ a nation of prophets; and it is a great honor for any nation to aid it. I bless the British nation for having extended such honorable aid to the people of the Torah, so that they may return to their land and renew their homeland.”
May all the world, and even the Jewish People, come to recognize this truth soon.
In friendship, a fellow "fanatic."

Most of Europe was a victim, not a collaborator of the Nazis
Only in Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe was there large-scale collaboration with the Nazis. Outside those areas Europe was far, far more victim than collaborator. Even in Fascist Italy and Spain, protection of Jews by the local citizenry was more the norm than the exception. Conversely, even in occupied France the collaborators were hated and far more Jews survived than in, say, Belgium. Nor did Europe "fade in importance" so much as find itself joined by a growing number of roughly equal players on the world stage.
scott, April 27, 2015 1:03 PM
I disagree
That's not true. The french actually handed more Jews over than they were asked to and then took as much Jewish property as possible. Only a fool or a madman can help but see the two thousand year history of pan European of antisemitsm as anything but that. Denmark evacuated its Jews for a price and parts of Hungary stood by their Jews as long as possible, but elsewhere the majority of Europeans didn't bat an eye.
Prior to WWII Europe was the center of the world. Now it's the US and Asia. Unemployment rates remaining in the double digits, birthrates falling, innovation happening elsewhere...Europe is fairly irrelevant.
Boca Mom, April 24, 2015 4:35 PM
free will
Yes, they were given opportunities, but they still had free will and could have chosen not to do the right thing. The fact that G-d gave someone an opportunity to do a great thing, in my opinion, means that G-d saw merit in the person. the fact that they did indeed follow through with the good deed shows they are good. It is said if you save one life it is equivalent of saving the whole world. Well, if G-d gave the US the ability to help save so many Jews, and to be such a great supporter of Israel, then the US had to have some merit or some inherent goodness to begin with. and since the Us is a nation, not a person, the collective entity, the over-riding values of freedom and fairness that we all try to uphold, must be the merit, and the leaders who carry out the good deed do deserve honor.

Incredible
"They ...create a form of Nazi fascism within sight and hearing of the democracies and in the midst of the Arab countries..." exactly the accusation we are now hearing from all corners of the world. This lie was carefully planted decades ago and carefully watered and is now come to fruition.
Aharon, April 22, 2015 2:47 PM
Even more incredible
That in 1945 when untold suffering was still being inflicted upon Jews by Nazis, the Saudi king had the audacity to accuse the Jews of Palestine of being Nazi-like!

THE 'TRUTH', ALMOST ALWAYS LIES SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE
THE ARAB WORLD WAS FAR MORE RESPONSIBLE AND PROTECTIVE OF JEWS, THAN VIRTUALLY ANY EAROPEAN NATION, EXCEPTIONS BEING DENMARK, BULGARIA...HOW HORRIBLE WAS FRANCE WHO WAS NOT FULLY OCCUPIED.
FDR WAS TRULY SICK, WHO DID THINGS AND PROMISED THINGS IN BAD MENTAL AS WELL AS PHYSICAL HEALTH.
HE COULD HAVE DONE MORE, ESPECIALLY IN THE 30s. HOWEVER, MOST IMPORTANT, ALIGNED WITH CHURCHILL, HE MADE US FIGHT AND DEFEAT HITLER BEFORE JAPAN, THE MOST CRUCIAL DECISION, FOR JEWS AND OTHERS, IN THE 20TH CENTURY.
ALL THIS MUST BE FACTORED IN TO AN EVALUATION OF FDR AND THE JEWS.

We need to let Presidents Know Where We Stand
It was fascinating reading how President FDR pledged to the Saudi king not to allow a Jewish state. Imagine if American Jews were able to create large petitions then. Please sign and pass on this petition to Obama. To treat Israel with respect and demand answers from Palestinians and Iran.

Be not too hasty
Don't rush to praise Harry Truman too much for his help. While he did stand behind the creation of Israel he did nothing to help the fledgling state. America did not contribute to the defense of the settlers in the new republic. It did not provide Israel with arms or any other support. Truman made many anti-Semitic comments and was not a real friend of the Jews.
However, Truman at least supported the formation of the State and for that we thank him.

WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT? RECOGNITION OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL
TRUMAN MADE IT HAPPEN! THE ISRAELI'S WERE SMALL BUT WELL TRAINED AGAINST OVERWHELMING MAJORITIES. BUT IT WAS CLEAR FROM THE BEGINNING THAT THEY COULD HANDLE IT/THEM ON THEIR OWN.
DON'T YOU THINK THAT WE(USA) KNEW THAT)? TRY AND LOOK AT WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT.
