In modern times, the Star of David has become a premier Jewish symbol. This six-pointed star (hexagram), made of two interlocking triangles, can be found on mezuzahs, menorahs, tallis bags and kipot. Ambulances in Israel bear the sign of the "Red Star of David," and the flag of Israel has a blue Star of David planted squarely in the center.
What is the origin of this six-pointed symbol?
The six points symbolize God's rule over the universe in all six directions.
Through the Jewish people's long and often difficult history, we have come to the realization that our only hope is to place our trust in God. The six points of the Star of David symbolize God's rule over the universe in all six directions: north, south, east, west, up and down.
Originally, the Hebrew name Magen David ― literally "Shield of David" ― poetically referred to God. It acknowledges that our military hero, King David, did not win by his own might, but by the support of the Almighty. This is also alluded to in the third blessing after the Haftorah reading on Shabbat: "Blessed are you God, Shield of David."
Suggested Symbolism
So when did the Star of David become adopted as a Jewish symbol? It is not referred to in the Bible or the Talmud, and was apparently adopted later in Jewish history. Still by exploring some various explanations on the meaning behind the Star of David, we can appreciate deep Jewish concepts.
One idea is that a six-pointed star receives form and substance from its solid center. This inner core represents the spiritual dimension, surrounded by the six universal directions. (A similar idea applies to Shabbat ― the seventh day which gives balance and perspective to the six weekdays.)
In Kabbalah, the two triangles represent the dichotomies inherent in man.
In Kabbalah, the two triangles represent the dichotomies inherent in man: good vs. evil, spiritual vs. physical, etc. The two triangles may also represent the reciprocal relationship between the Jewish people and God. The triangle pointing "up" symbolizes our good deeds which go up to heaven, and then activate a flow of goodness back down to the world, symbolized by the triangle pointing down.
Some note that the Star of David is a complicated interlocking figure which has not six (hexogram) but rather 12 (dodecogram) sides. One can consider it as composed of two overlapping triangles or as composed of six smaller triangles emerging from a central hexogram. Like the Jewish people, the star has 12 sides, representing the 12 tribes of Israel.
A more practical theory is that during the Bar Kochba rebellion (first century), a new technology was developed for shields using the inherent stability of the triangle. Behind the shield were two interlocking triangles, forming a hexagonal pattern of support points. (Buckminster Fuller showed how strong triangle-based designs are with his geodesics.)
One cynical suggestion is that the Star of David is an appropriate symbol for the internal strife that often afflicts Jewish nation: two triangles pointing in opposite directions!
The Star of David was also a sad symbol of the Holocaust.
The Star of David was a sad symbol of the Holocaust, when the Nazis forced Jews to wear an identifying yellow star. Actually, Jews were forced to wear special badges during the Middle Ages, both by Muslim and Christian authorities, and even in Israel under the Ottoman Empire.
So whether it is a blue star waving proudly on a flag, or a gold star adorning a synagogue's entrance, the Star of David stands as a reminder that for the Jewish people... in God we trust.

prymid or triangle pointed up...is a represention of males......and in the opposite direction is a represention of a female like the chalise......together it forms unity, and a bond between male&female....a love....a protection.....if a rib was taken from man to create woman woven from man the star of david brings the two together again as one in the most highest form....LOVE.......for one another and see God so loved us that he did give his only begotten son for our sins but before that he gave us each other and the Love for one another.... for and threw Love we can do all things....thank you God for the power of Love.

Thank You!
Hi Rabbi, thank you so much for throwing such interesting light on the origins $ meaning of the Magen David! As a young girl growing up in rural South Africa. I experienced a gr8 deal of anti-Semitism! This eventually led to me developing an incredibly strong Jewish identity Baruch Hashem! I wear my faith with immense pride never removing the Magen David around my neck for all to see! I was asked today about the symbolism, so again, thank you! Warmest regards, Anni

My Theory....
This is a very weak suggestion, but throughout all my reading of books to do with the 'Secod Temple Period" (The Herodian Temple) Ive seen countless carved or otherwise renderings in pictures of artifacts from the era of the 'Six Petalled Rosette' which could very very simply and rapidly rendered as the two inter-locking triangles. Ill try to find an example to link to. ll be back inna minit!

Star of David for my Chanukah Cards
Although I did know and understand the significance of our Star of David, it is always a wonderful reminder and an easy explanation for others to understand when questioned. As a child, my father built a huge Star of David with blue lights to display on our property. This Chanukah, my husband and I did build one for our home and it is displayed proudly on our property. Wonderful childhood memories do carry onto throughout my life! Happy Chanukah!

In 1948, the Rothschild Foundation gave $ 2 million to President Truman in Masonic support for his campaign. Provided that they recognize the State of Israel at its .. When the declaration of the state of Israel, President Truman recognized the President of the United States, yet only half an hour of their establishment. As for the link, logo, star Alheiksaguram with King David, he is not a specific date, but it is believed that he began the eighteenth century and nineteenth centuries when preparing for the establishment of the Zionist Organization. The Star of David
An old teacher told me that the Star of David symbolized the forces of the Divine meeting the forces of humankind. It shows how inextricably we are connectedl.
(303) Anonymous, December 3, 2011 4:24 PM
Star found in nature. How can it be satanic ?
A lot of people say the Star of David is a Satanic symbol. Perhaps they could explain the following then. Look carefully at a dafodil flower. It has six points and a six sided centre exaxtly the same as the Star of David. Now let me see. Who made the dafodil again ? Oh yes that's right it was God. You also get flowers with 5,4,3,2 and 1 petal so how can you grab God's creations and say exact linear copies are evil ? People can try to USE certain shapes and words in their practise of evil but this does not make those shapes and words evil. Money is not evil yet it can be used for evil so can the internet, guns, medicines etc etc. Wisdom is free but if you reject it then it will reject you.
(302) Joshua ben David, November 16, 2011 5:45 AM
Was it a Pagan Symbol BEFORE the Birth of Israel?
Read the Book- "IBM & the Holocaust" by Edwin Black (Holocaust Survivor). Many think that the Magen David had roots in BAAL? Was it redeemed? Aren't we supposed to get rid of every Trace of BAAL?
(301) Eli, November 6, 2011 4:56 AM
It is satanic. The true symbol of Jews is the MENORAH, for 5,000 years!
I was in denial of this for over 30 years until relatively recently. It is the truth, our religion and symbol since time immemorial has been the MENORAH, not this hexagram, symbol of death & destruction. Everyone, write an email or snail mail to Prime Minister Netanyahu, ask him to take the satanic hexagram off of the flag of the State Of Israel and replace it with the REAL SYMBOL OF JEWS UNTIL THE YEAR 1700 - THE MENORAH!!! I believe all hatred towards Jews & Israel will end then. Please read and research online yourselves. It is the TRUTH!!!!

A universal symbol
The star of David is also found in Islamic architecture, as well as pre-Christian "paganism." While satanists also use the symbol for black magical rituals hence adulterating its purity and erroneously giving the Star pf David a bad name. The star of david is a symbol of the connection between the heavenly and earthly realms and therefore describes the relationship between Man and G-d, a concept epitomised by the Jewish People.

"In God We Trust"
A very fitting end to an informative article. Thank you Rabbi. The same end adorns our currency in the U.S. However, the "God" referred to on our currency at this juncture in history, has been relegated to that to mean whatever we fancy at any point in a given day. Thankfully, we can know for certain, that the God you refer to, is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--the God who serves as shield and bulwark to those who trust in His unfailing love. A blanket of peace over you today, David

Star of David
Excuse me...not literally mandorla, but same meaning. Mandorla is overlapping circles.
(291) Jason Gosnell, July 23, 2011 3:45 PM
Star of David as mystical symbol of Truth
This is an ancient symbol called the mandorla. From a mystical or nondual point of view, one triangle points up to heaven and one down to earth. I asked a Jewish mystic and also a Christian mystic...they both indicated that it symbolizes the oneness of man and God or heaven and Earth. They are two, but One.

The star of david can represent the universe. In binary seven is = to the power of one in three positions (111) If you fold an equalateral triangle in quarters so that each point touches you will create a perfect 3 dimensional object with 3 sides an
The center of the star using:light, binary, frequency of colors and programming logic can represent 7, white, spiritual perfection and the throne of god. The outlaying points can represent the 7 days of creation with the Shabbat being the center. I imagine I may sound a little nuts here but I have been studying this for 7 years now and I believe God has revealed this to me - not in visions or dreeams or words but in His own divine way. Wish I could sit down with you and ask you a lot of questions. I'm sure my one line summary is not very clear how I have logically arrived some conclusions I have put forth. thank you for you time

(268) Anonymous, November 2, 2010 9:01 PM
this was really good article, I didnt know any of this and it has interesting facts about the jewish symbol
(267) Jews4Truth, October 16, 2010 2:41 AM
Symbol is not jewish, never used by David
Remember, the menorah is the true symbol. More jews should speak up about these much ancient symbols being adopted by judaism. All jews owe it to themselves to study the origins of the non biblical symbols. Wikipedia and other jewish sites fail to address the origins of this. If we are god's chosen then we should seek the truth and be open in presenting it, not in trying to cover it up or interpret the symbol in our own way that makes it sound cool. The interlocking triangles with a hexagram center was given to some European jews in the 17th century but it's use goes way back, long before jews started using the symbol.

(264) Saul Pillai, August 20, 2010 12:38 PM
Question
What is the oldest known artifect to bear the Star of David? Is there any mention of it in the Torah? I don't know much but find it amazing that this star is a symbol shared by almost ALL Jewish communities (not sure about Kai Feng of Falasha communities) around the world although there may not be many other similarities between them by way of symbolism.
(263) David Nearhood, August 19, 2010 2:58 AM
It is the name David
The two triangles connected are the name David in ancient Hebrew. The triangle is the Dalet. the connection is the Vav which is the fastener and the Dalet again. Simply it spells his name. Symbol by design.
(262) LauraHill, August 18, 2010 12:19 PM
The Star of David
The beautiful Star of David is the Jewish symbol is recognized worldwide as a symbol of G-d's people. As a Christian, I support Israel financially, in prayer for favor from G-d, and because they are right to be on the land. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
(261) Sam barsam, August 18, 2010 9:50 AM
The actual first dates the magen david was established
Many minhagim became established much later that was supposed, eg lighting candles probably about the 11cenury c.e. So when did the Magen David establish itself as a Jewish Motif.
(260) Anonymous, August 18, 2010 8:13 AM
Thank you for this article. It is my understanding that the shield (star) of David was actually two paelo-Hebrew dalets (Ds) which were shaped like triangles. And since the name David in Hebrew is dalet vav dalet, the shield itself is basically the interlocking NAME of David. If that is a true explanation, I'd like to know because that would mean the symbol is not pagan as I agree with the person numbered 257 that traditions cannot be above the Torah.
(259) Françoise Lipchitz, August 18, 2010 7:30 AM
Caution
I never wear my magen David when in Paris (France ) : I could be harrassed

(257) Anonymous, August 18, 2010 5:20 AM
Is the Star of David actually of pagan origin?
I was told and have read that the star of David or the "Hexogram" was in fact, introduced to King Solomon by his Egyptian wife, who used it in her idolatry. Now, I don't know if this is true or not. However, it has to be noted that religions have taken symbols that they thought were okay, but were of pagan origin. Think about Christianity and the "cross". I hear that they are starting to find out that the "cross" is pagan. They are even finding out that Christmas and Easter are pagan. Who knows, maybe some will start to convert to Judaism. The point is....... I think we should look into this. Judaism must be the light to the world. Therefore, if something within the tradition is pagan or of pagan origins, we must dispose of it. We cannot mix both the holy and the profane. If, after thorough research, we find the "Hexogram" isn't pagan, then, that would be wonderful news! But it must be searched out. Star of David - Source of solace, source of conflict.
A wonderful erudite explanation of our treasured symbol. I wonder if you realize the negative emotions it arouses simultaneously with its appreciation and devotion in those Jewish people who saw it disgraced and mocked by the Nazi murderers. They did everything possible to equate it with shame and humiliation.

A shield in battle
Picture a Magen David with a diameter of approximately 3 feet with two leather arm straps on the back side for holding. The upper point protects the head and allows the user to "peek" out from each side of the point to defend against head blows. The two upper triangles protect the arms the lower triangles protect the legs and the lower center point protects the groin.

Star of David
I wear my Star proudly and let the world know that I am a Jew and that King David was Our King who made Jerusalem his capital as it stands today of the State of Israel. Your description of what it means was well done and a true symbol of Judaism. Thank you

Star of David not ever a religious symbol
Many geometric shapes besides the hexogram are found integrated in Middle Eastern and ancient Hebrew Architectual designs particularly in the Roman Era. Various geometric symbols were used for ornimentation. There were no hexogram symbols in the First or Second Temples. The hexogram has no religious significance and gained popularity in the diaspora particularly in Prague where it was used in Synagogues. The Muslims have the 8 pointed star, the Christians the 5 pointed star so the Jews wound up with the 6 pointed star. If David had a symbol on his shield, most likely it would have been the lion of Judah.

a beautiful symbol
Thank you for your article about the Magen David, and, whether it is mentioned in Kabala or not, what you say is truly a beautiful analysis of a powerfully beautiful symbol for all the reasons given. I often give reign to my creative imagination and can see even further connects, and I do believe all connects of this kind are truly "heaven" sent. Several times on line, I got a wonderful email that was sent around showing how all the Hebrew letters could be drawn from the lines of the Star of David, and this was truly remarkable. There is this notion of what is above and what is below, are connected, deeply, and that we are co-creating the universe with God at the helm. Recently I visited the Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes and was struck by the fact that when folded up, these beautiful butterflies, or moths do look like heraldic shields and on their backside there is a pattern that so resembles for me the tree, or in extension, the Tree of Life. I do believe we are gifted to perceive a one ness that is echoic and the wonder of this has everything to do with the very words of our Shema, that God is One and ever present in all creation.

origination of the star
I grow pomegranatesi my Florida garden. During the growth stage of the fruit, I see the end blossom which looks exactly like the Star of David in its shape. Considering the finding of many stones in Jerusalem bearing this fruit shape and the fact that the hundreds of blessing come from the counting of the fruits seeds, I can easily see the Star of David as emanating from this exotic fruit.
(249) gail mellish, August 17, 2010 2:29 PM
when was the star of David first used?
(248) yoni baron, July 7, 2010 1:50 AM
twice delta
The symbol for the fourth character, daled, in ancient hebrew script is a traingle, much like the Greek, delta. David in Hebrew is spelled daled vav daled, since vav is a conjugator the coat of arms King Davids is two daleds conjugated ie star of david.

How about a double dalet in the original Hebrew ?
B"H My understanding is that until the period of the Babylonian captivity we used the Paleo Hebrew as our Script de Jour, with a brief interlude at the time of Bar Kokhba. The offset triangle represented the symbol dalet and with David HeMelekh's appellation ostensibly beginning and ending with Dalet, that symbol came to be known as the "Magen David". Hence the double dalet. So the flag as we know it today literally means David or the Standard of David from days of old according to our original script.
(245) David, March 19, 2010 8:05 AM
Inaccurate
This is uncharacteristic of Aish's writing. The article here is simply misleading and inaccurate. The Star of David has absolutely no source in the classic Kabbalistic texts (Zohar, etc.). There are important arrangements of double-3's (e.g. chochma-binah-dat, chesed-gevurah-tifferet)- but no mention of specific interlocking triangles called "Star (or shield) of David". There is also no specific mention in other classic Torah texts. Yes the connections made in this article give good reason for it to be a Jewish symbol, but this is Divine Providence, Holy Coincidence, not tradition. Further- the popularity of the Star of David in Jewish circles actually had a very dubious catalyst- Shabbatai Tzvi. His movement is what made it popular and "Jewish" (as opposed to it's presence in other sources where he perhaps borrowed it from), and the Zionist movement which grew out of that (same funders, committees, etc.) enhanced it's popularity. I think the beauty of the symbol is that despite its essentially non-Torah, non-Jewish beginnings, it has become a symbol of Judaism. We've lifted it out of the mud, polished it, and made it a thing of beauty.

The age of Magen-David
As historic refference of the age of the Magen-David, rav Simmons reffer to the Bar-Kochba rebellion of first century. I want to add to this that the Magen-David also appear in some ancient synagogues in the Gallil as well as in the arabic wall of Jerushalayim. Some stones have been dated to the second Temple-era, wich gives a clue to us that the use of the sheild of David well predated the Middle Ages, wich some historians wrongly claim the sheild was invented in. In fact the use of the magen-David goes back, as the name indicate, to King David and this is a known fact today among some families that descend from king David.

Cube
I like to thank you, for the best explanation, i have ever read. By that i mean these words; quote: One idea is that a six-pointed star receives form and substance from its solid center. This inner core represents the spiritual dimension, //// But only till here, the rest does not fit in my theorie. And it goes like this; vold of the star all the points, towords the center. By doing that, you create a 3Dcube. And when i connect it with the spiritual center theorie, it gives me the same symbolical meaning, as with the islamic ka'ba. thanks Rabbi

Our God I Really Can Trust For Life
Our God I Really Can Trust For Life Our God I really can trust for life- He that saved me from strife. Opening my thoughts far and wide- As His angel spared me death at my side. Wearing Jewish star symbols proudly I do- Being this proud Jew all the way through. Wearing two Jewish stars more than one- Prouldly wearing them publicly for everyone. Wearing my Mom's own tiny Jewish star- Celebrating our Jewishness together by far! Thinking heritage thoughts seriously I now do- What's our ultimate exiistance by being a a Jew?

Origin of name?
Can anyone comment why we call it the star of David? Did David first come up with it? When was it first introduced in Judaism?

As above - So below
Another take on the symbol of the hexagram is that what is in the macrocosm will be reflected in the microcosm - the maxim of the mysteries from the beginning of time. If we create a macrocosmic model of the world it will manifest in the physical world around us. It can also be seen in some schools of kabbalah as how God can influence the ruach if we accept and follow divine inspiration and guidance. There are many permutations i this most ancient of symbols that even predates Judaism.

The Star of David has the 22 Hebrew letters in it. Block letters. Google the star of David, look under images and you will find it and all the letters in the star. It is really cool!
(236) Anonymous, February 6, 2010 12:54 AM
the two interlocking triangles the connections and diffrences of powers of 3. the hexagon created in the center of the star is to me like core to life. think honeycomb the interlocking pattern of 6. the number 6 representing man since man was created on the 6th day so has much importance. part of the number 3 from another point of view the 3 divine connections of love being touch, smell, eye's. don't think touching is necessary to find that out the ideas of 3 by 2 to bring out not exact replica of self. seems as a spiritual bond a connection spiritual bond of love. so divine star of david as kingship comes dovid, and dovid was a man of love . its differences in balance in a relationship. it might just be when the 2 realize who they are. who become one brings out life and kingship of man when the 8th day comes around. they say melach mashiach, but how can he be him without his other true soul reflection.

Dalid in ancient Hebrew
The letter dalid in the ancient Hebrew alphabet was a triangle. Two interlocking triangles could be attributed to King David and his royal house, as a royal cipher.

THE DA VINCI CODE
Dan Brown explains in the Da Vinci Code that the triangles of the magen david represent man & women. The upward facing triangle=man (the sword, anatomy), the downward facing triangle=women (the womb). He explains that it symbolizes the necessary unity between man & women. I found a gemara in Berochos that explains why David refers to himself as totally righteous due to the fact that he helps husbands & wives live harmoniously . This may be why Davids shield is the symbol of unity between man & women; it was his merit! It may also be why the magen david is the symbol of the shield of the Jews.. so long as we have unity in our homes we will be shielded by G-d!!

origin of Star of David
I read somewhere that the old Hebrew symbol for daleth is a triangle. David is spelled with 2 daleths. Those 2 daleths or triangles superimposed for the Star of David.

Magen David's origins relate to David's name.
While our rabbis sometimes like to find complicated reasons for rather simple issues, Rashi had it right when he advocated first looking for the Pshat (simple meaning). The Star of David is quite likely the two Daleds (which resembled triangles in David's time) which comprised his name intertwined as a kind of monogram.

Question, how early was the symbol used?
How early was the symbol of the six pointed star used by the Jewish people? Some sources attribute it to the middle ages and some to the actual physical sheild that King David carried in battle. Was the symbol used unofficially by some Jews at various times? It has also been said that the star was used as a symbol of magic. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it.

One Life That Survived.
My teacher did a interview with a person who survived. (you can find this in a collage book on the Holocast) He was a young lad at the time. He and his family were "relocated" to a camp. On his way to the camp, a guard came up to him. He said," How old are you?" He answered," Ten." The guard said," No, you are 14 and are a tailor." He said," NO I'm 10 and I don't know how to tailor." The guard said," NO!!!! You are 14 and are a tailor! So when the Nazia asked what age he was, he said 14. They then asked if he had ant talents, he said he was a tailor. The Nazia took him along with 15 others to tailor suits and shine shoes. It was hard, but later he found out that if he said he was 10 and not a tailor, he would have been gased, killed. That boy lived through the war, and then opened a tailor shop. He had been working there ever since. Sorry to say that man is now dead. But his memory will be forever known in the U.S. Holocast Book Of Records. Thank you.

The Signifiance of the Star of David to America
Who was Hayim Solomon...You will notice 13 stars in the right-hand circle of the US $1 bill. This was ordered by George Washington who, when he asked Hayim Solomon, a wealthy Philadelphia Jew, what he would like as a personal reward for his service to the Continental army, Soloman said he wanted nothing for himself, but that he would like something for his people. The Star of David was the result. Few know that it was Solomon who helped saved the Army through his financial contributions... and died a pauper.

STAR OF DAVID
Ever since I was a boy I have loved the Star of David. Never knew why, I just did. I'm not a religious Jew by any means. How ever I AM a proud Son of Israel. Both my Parents were members of the JDL in the Late 60's through the early 70's. I have met holocaust survivors and listen to their stories. All have given me strength in my love for Jewish blood. This page has given me even more reasons of why I'm proud to be a Jew.
May the Star of David shine in our hearts and lives forever.
(158) shelva, December 15, 2007 4:38 PM
i love the star of daivd.
i think its nice that the Jews have a star to represent there religion and everything and the six pointed star symbolize Gods rule over the universe in all six directions.

From ashes to victory
Out of the ashes of World War II came the greatest nation on planet earth. The enemies of Israel branded us with a star; now that star shines brigher than ever and stands higher than ever. Long live Israel.

the meaning of the Star of David
I just wanted to thank you--I am not Jewish, but I am a nursery school teacher in a Christian school and wanted to teach the children about Hanukkah as well as Christmas. I wanted to know the true meaning of the Star of David so I could be prepared to answer their questions. Your website is informative, yet presented simply enough that I can pass on this knowledge to my four-year old class. It's never too early (or in my case, too late!) to learn about other cultures and religions. Thank you!

our cub scouts are learning about other celebrations around the world and we chose Hannuka. We are making the star of David and I wanted to be able to tell them what it symbolizes. This site was a great help. As our children understand the symbols, they may also develop understanding of the Jewish peoples.

Homework help--thanks!
I am so glad I found this article! I am in the 7th grade, and it really explained SO much about the Star of David! It also helped me on my homework assignment very well!
Also, last night, I watched the Da Vinci Code. When Leigh Teabing says that the Star of David was really two pagan symbols for male and female, I was very confused. Though what Teabing said might have some truth behind it, I think that a lot of people got the wrong idea about this religious symbol. I am very glad that this article cleared up any confusion for me. I'll definitely recommend this article to anyone who wants to learn a bit more about the Star of David.
Again, thanks!

I am teaching about the Holocaust to my sixth graders, and this article on the Star of David will prove very helpful.
I am a sixth grade Language Arts teacher, and our last unit in Language Arts and Social Studies is WWII and the Holocaust.
I am trying my best to balance the unspeakable horror with the stories of hope. In so doing, I am introducing Jewish symbols and the solidarity and hope they continue to represent.
As a 48-year-old woman whose father and two uncles served in the military during WWII, I heard first-hand accounts of so much. Teaching 11 and 12 year olds, I am trying to reach a sense of empathy in them...
This will help me so much. Thank you!

paleo hebrew
I have been told by more than one Rabbi, hebrew teachers etc that the Magen David is two interlocking Paleo Hebrew letter dalet. Which really makes sense since it is David who was our greatest King. This article has also showed how really important the Magen David is to us a Jews, why else has used it against us. It symbolizes where we came from the House of David which ultimately is where Mashiach will be from also.

This is better
I was glad to find this explanation . I am Christian and don't know a whole about Judiasm ,but I certainly recognized the lie in the movie - "The Davinci Code " - the star of david was made up two pagan symbols the one that stood for male and the one that stood for female . I am just saddened by the fact that so many people will get taken in by this mans lies .

Star of David Pin
I used your site as I am trying to find out some more about a pin my grandmother gave me. It is an old silver 4 pence piece whith a star of David milled out on one side. This has then been made into a pin. The coin is dated 1843.

Another theory on the Star of David
We are taught that the pinnacle of the triangle is the 'point of power' as it flows down to the people. The irony is that when you reverse the triangle, it is the people that rule together, down to the individual-yet all the lines of the triangles are interconnected. Both co-exist together, strengthen each other and have continuity and longevity--all with G-d's blessing.

interested to become a Jew
Dear Rabbi,
I've been fascinating with Jewish religion since long time ago. From events happened to me recently, I feel that my present religion--Islam--was not felt matching with me anymore. I really appreciate if you could give me some recommendation for me to learn Judeaism.
I'm an Indonesian citizen, lived in Bandung, West Java. I'm 29 years old by April 14th this year, have Bachelor Degree in Animal Husbandry. I'm unemployed, seemed to me it's hard enough to find a job in Indonesia.
I have a desire to visit Israel some day, learning about Judeaism thoroughly. I have a mission (impossible, maybe) to introduce Judeaism in Indonesia. I get an intuition that my life was somehow dedicated for it.
Maybe you could give me some solutions. Can't wait for that.
Thank you for reading my message.
Sincerely Yours.
PS: Since Indonesia are still the largest Moslem country in the world ( anti-Jew sentiment is considerably high in here), I really appreciate if you could keep my profile in confidentiality. Thank you again.

interesting stuff
ok so as i was searching the internet fo a couple of phisiscs question i had i came across a website that spoke of some very complex quantum energy flows as i read and tried to understand the jargon i came across a part that said that the basic make up of all the enrgy in the universe can be summed up in to two kinds of "fluid" energy the cube and the " star tetrahedron " that also seems to be of the same base 12 structure in the human dna since i didnt really know what a " star tetrahedron " was i looked it up and found out that it was basically a tree dimetional star of david and algo that geometrically speaking this shape is used to describe the volume of a cube... so we have a star of david and a cube that are the basic make up of the universe and coincidentailly human dna and then we have the fact that the star of david is the measure for a cube hence we may conclude that misteriously enough the star of david is the basic shape of the cosmic weeve and that my friends is quite shocking... given the kabbalistic siginficance of the sign way before any of the above facts of SIENCE where dicoverd... http://www.sciforums.com/archive/index.php/t-2591.html (thats where the whole thing about the star tetarhedron\cube\dna comes from...)

Hello.. I do not mean any disrespect whatsoever but i bought a star of david necklace thinking it was a normal 6 pointed star. It says that Jews were forced to wear special badges during the Middle Ages, both by Muslim and Christian authorities, and even in Israel under the Ottoman Empire.
I am a muslim.I mean no disrespect but I am curious. Did the muslim and christian fight with the jews or along side the jews?

The Star of David.
I do not label my self as jewish, nor any other label, nor any labeled religion, I just am. I would just like to share some information that I got through visions. I seen the Star of David on a number of ocasions in visions. The star has #'s on it #1 at the top and #6 at the bottom, #2 at top left tip then #3 at top right tip, #4 left bottom tip, #5 right bottow tip. In the middle of the star is a puddle of clear water in a circle. The feelings and words that come to me with this vision is that the puddle of water is consesness and the star is an energy grid. also this vision shows me the puddle expanding in size and mass evenly until the star is consumed in a perfect circle of water wich is consisness. Well just thought I would share that with you all I often have visons but never really know what they mean. but hope It helps someone out there. Have great day. :)

Magen Dawid (as was taught me)
It is my personal belief that The Star of David is the symbol of the eternal covenant between the Almighty (triangle pointing up) and His People (triangle pointing down) becomes sealed by the acceptance of one party of the other (intertwining triangles). The same becomes a Shield for as long as the laws of covenant is upheld and followed by His subjects.
Thank you for this opportunity because I enjoy learning from this web site.

Star of David
One thing I found familiar about the Star of David is that it resembles a simple water molecule string. Six oxygen atoms and 12 hydrogen atoms. In freezing conditions you get a symmetrical hexagonal crystal. Also drawn out as a molecular compound with the covalent bonds, it is similar. Just wanted to let you know.
Thanks

perfect triangles
if one were to draw 3 lines in the center of two perfect triangles that were inverted over each other there would be 12 perfect triangles. if one were to say there there is a perfect symbol, say a circle. i say a circle because it's always perfect. i then would give God this symbol because a circle is neverending. a triangle can be described as a birth, death, rebirth. i would call it mankind. my point simply put is that even though im not Jewish, The Star Of David is a flag that Israel should be proud of as i am of the American flag. God bless your nation.

Clear, concise and answered my questions.
I had been asked the meaning of the five pointed star by a Catholic Priest teaching Sunday School to teen-agers. Although I had taught Sunday School at my synagogue many years ago, I could not recall the answer. Thank you for being there when I needed you..

I like what I see and may stay awhile.
I am African American born in Tennessee throughout my life I have been in love with the Jewish people. My mother an African/Native American mix had the same passion. Somehow our blood and our hearts are Jewish. My teenage son has the same natural love for all things Jewish. Thank you for being a good resource for all things Jewish.

God's rule over the universe in all six directions
Your halfway there, but a translation of the magen also explains why we should treat others as we wish to be treated by others. It also explains why human beings cannot see what they are doing. Even when it is obvious to the detatched observer.

All people should be educated as to the reasons behind religious symbols and practices. I am certainly happy to have learned so much from a single web site! As a teenager, it is difficult when living in a world of judgment and stereotypes to sort through all of the assumptions and find the truth. It is heartening to know that there are those, such as yourselves, willing to educate people on the truth.

Thank You
I looked in many places for the origin of the Star of David. I was curious for a long time since I heard it was originally an occult sign (hexagram). However I couldn't understand why the Jewish people would pick such a sign. Turns out there are other reasons for it. Thank you for this study.

Thanx for ur help on my english presentation (I got an A)
The star of david or Magen David is the sign of Judaism. During the holocaust jews were required to wear the star of david on their sleeve, front or back of their shirt, or on their jacket. It also had to be visible at all times for the Nazis to know that they were a jew and because it was one of the Nemburg Laws passed.

Broader, more inclusive history of the hexagram as a protective or magical device
The name Star of David, derived from the Hebrew "Magen David" (literally "Shield of David"), hints that there would be a direct connection between the star and (King) David.
A legend states that David would have worn a Star of David on his shield, whenever he went into battle. Not a single shred of evidence was ever found for this however.
The Star of David is a hexa-angular star, also called hexagram. This hexagram was used during the ancient history as a magical sign by among others by the Greek, Romans and the Babylonians, and taken over later by among others the Jews.
In the Middle ages the Jews used the hexagram specifically to the following three ends:
• as a decoration, and in particular as a graphical picture of a rose with six half round leaves;
• as a magical symbol. Thus pregnant women used the image of an hexagram as protection for the unborn child; others used it as a deterrant against demons;
• as an astrological symbol, and in particular as a graphical picture of the sun or a big star.
Despite the fact that the hexagram was used in an ancient past for several goals already in Jewish society, back then it didn't have the meaning the Star of David currently has by far.
Be well.

star
As far as I know, the star of david,if dismemberd in 2 parts, forms two triangles...
The one pointing down,is simble of god's looking down and loving his people from above. The second one, pointing up,shows us not only the way that the people look to god,but underlines that our god is ONE,for it ends in one single point.

CLEAR AND CONCISE
A non-Jewish colleague of mine received a beautifully painted ceramic Magen David from a friend, with a note saying: "As a symbol and reminder of life's ultimate meaning".
She didn't have a clue either about the 'symbol' or its meaning... so she came to me for an explanation: and I didn't have a clue either, except about the Star's general representation as a Jewish identification sign of Israel and its people at large.
Your clear explanation solved my immediate problems and avoided my embarassment: thank you!

One possibility missed...
I've also heard it described as two Yad's entertwined.
"The yad can be thought of as an equilateral triangle.
The Star of David is formed by intertwining two equilateral triangles. The Star of David has a total of 360 degrees, symbolizing perfection. The two triangles can be thought of as two intertwining yads, an obvious symbol of a handclasp. The triangle pointing up symbolizes mankind's hand reaching up to God, while the triangle pointing down symbolizes God's hand reach down to man."
Symbolising the covenant people... in a handclasp with God?

I learned the significance of the 6 points of the Star of David.
When my deceased father returned from the carnage of World War 1, he understandly lost his faith; consequently, I received no formal religious education. I am learning here, and I respect this religion very much. It is the only one that makes any sense to me. Thank you.
I too experienced the fires of war in World War 11; so, I do not condemn my father. He was a great man, and he respected your faith. Rex

The meanings of the Star of David
When we look at the Star of David we
should be then reminded that it is G-d
we indeed do trust. For He is our
shield and help in time of trouble.

Star of David
I heard one story that the triangles in the Star of David represent G-d reaching down to man and man reaching up to G-d. I like that one.
(12) David Silver, June 27, 2002 12:00 AM
Symbol of Blessing
I like to think of the Mogen David as a symbol of a blessing. If you place your hands flat on a surface with thumbs extended and joined and your index fingers touching, you will make a triangle. When another person places his hands over yours, you will form a Mogen David. If a person is being blessed by one person then G-D could be the other person to form the Mogen David.

The Shield of David
I've been taught it orginated as the shield of David's army. Rotate the star slightly and you have 2 points to rest the head between, 2 points covering the arms and 2 points covering the legs. Thus becoming the "Star of David."

Speculations on Magen David today, back then?
Without doubt whatsoever, the writer resonates with and identifies ABSOLUTELY Judaism and the "symbol." Please remember that at its' simplest level of geometry there are two triangles. Yet, geometry is a mathematical science, which may also be used in geology, botany and zoology, representing the "basic" matrixes or patterns to which matter assembles into form. Virtually any subjective interpretation works for that person, who then transposes emotional and psychological dynamics upon a shape or geometric form. The Kabbalistic view, more accurately approaches the truth, as to duality, polaritity, disparity, similarity, of the material (visible) versus spiritual (invisible) Nature of existence. Anecdotely, the ancient Brahmins of "Vidya" (ancient name for India) also held sacred the same symbol, but placed within their terminologies and frames of reference. Who has first claim, we, they or Nature.
The latter, for the Creator created, then came Adam (Man)!
(8) Jacob, June 26, 2002 12:00 AM
Also....
Also, the star can symbolize the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people. The stars are interlocked into each other, and can not be pulled apart. About an earlier comment, don't forget that many "ancient mosques" are actually ancient synagogues stolen and converted into mosques. Its true that the star only became a widely known jewish symbol in the 19th century, but its been in jewish art and architecture for ages.
(7) Anonymous, June 26, 2002 12:00 AM
Two paths in life...
One interesting interpretation of the Jewish star I saw is that it represents the dual roles of Adam Harishon and Avraham Avinu. The triangle that's wide and the top and narrow at the bottom represents man's acceptance of divine bounty. God provides, and we take sustenance therefrom. That's a regular human being's job, as it were, on earth.
Avraham, however, has the additional responsibility to elevate the physical world in service to God. So he has to take the vast resources of the world (the wide base) and refocus them back to the source of all blessing -- the narrow top--Hashem. Doing both is the job description of every Jew. And of course, the Avraham triangle lies on top of the Adam one.
(6) Eitan Hirsch, June 25, 2002 12:00 AM
Logo of Magen David identical to tne Menorah
The star of david has seven spaces. Six triangles and the central. In the three vertical space write: Abraham,Israel, Yzhak. In the four side triangles write: Sarah Rivkah Rachel, Leah. If in each of the seven spaves you light a candle you get the seven flames of the Holy Menorah. Israel is at the center Abraham to the right and Rivkah to the left. By the initials, the order: Abraham, Sarah, Leah, Israel, (Be)Izhak,Hatachlit (Rachel) and Rivkah make the sentence : Aish Li Bahar meanibg: Fire for me on the mountain.

Jews Not the First or Only to Use the Star
Of course we mustn't forget that the Jews weren't the first to use this ancient symbol. It appears in Native American history, as well as in some ancient Muslim mosques. The 6-pointed star became an "official" Jewish symbol in the late 19th century at the beginning of the Zionist movement. The only "true" symbol of the Jewish people is the 7-branched Menorah, or Temple Light, now used as the official symbol of the State of Israel. No one else in history has ever used that symbol, and it is the only one we can truly call our own.
(4) Giovanni Ross, June 24, 2002 12:00 AM
A star of many dimensions.
Like most signs and symbols in Judaism: there are many interpretations as well as multiple levels of interpretation. The great "Star" or "Shield of David" is no exception! There is a progressive correctness to all of these interpretations from every generation of Jewery...and there will be more added in every generation yet to come as Jewish history and lived experience build on the this primary symbol's meaning. Like G*d himself these interpretations are myriad...they are the fullness of each one seperately and yet all of them collectively as well. In the end: for some Jews and non-Jews...this great star is only a political symbol and nothing more. The bottom line in the end is that both G*d and his people are at the foundation of its meaning and power in a world that is often at enmity with both.

Another take on the Star of David
Somewhere along the way I heard that the star of David was based upon the fact that the ancient way of writing Hebrew, which is different from the one that we currently know (and that is referred to textually as "ksav ashira") hinted at the name of David. That is because the ancient way of making a Daled was a simple triangle, and that the name of David was Daled-vav-daled. i.e. two triangles in a straight line. Hence, the star of David was essentially a pun/fun yet profound way of presenting the name of David as sort of a "logo". (Don't ask me where the vav comes in!)
(1) Anonymous, June 23, 2002 12:00 AM
Another Theory on Magen David
I had heard that at the time of King David, Hebrew Script made the letter Dalet the same as a Greek Delta is today. The triangles were actually interlocking Dalets, for the two that David is spelled with.
