In celebration of Israel's 53rd birthday, we present our readers' "Top 53 Reasons We Love Israel." (not in order of priority)
- It is a holy land, a gift from the Almighty!
- Israel is the only place that is my true home. Everywhere else is just temporary.
- Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken are Kosher!!!
DanielYosef67@aol.com - The heightened sense of holiness that you feel with every step you take while you are in Israel.
brookler@a2i.com - The beauty of the Land of Israel from the deserts of the Negev to the mountains and valleys of the Galil and the Golan; from the coastal plains to the hills of Jerusalem the geography of Israel is incredibly diverse. And the beauty of Jerusalem especially the sun shining on the Jerusalem stone.
brookler@a2i.com - It's the only place in the world where the seas, sand, wind, sky, rain, hills, desert speak to you in Psalms. The clouds and crevices in the rocks look like Hebrew letters. The Land speaks the words of Hashem.
MmJn5@aol.com - Israel is the only place where a Jew doesn't have to take off school or work in order to keep Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the other holidays.
Thebrez@aol.com - The history, the grandeur of the past can be seen everywhere you turn; and, at the same time, you realize that you are a part of the history that is unfolding before your very eyes.
brookler@a2i.com - Israel is the place where we can fully be Jews, and walk proudly in the streets without fear of being discriminated.
- Ben Yehuda Street Where better to go when you want to feel like you're in both Israel and the US? A great mix of both cultures, with new experiences awaiting you with every turn you take.
BSLubarsky@aol.com - It's the only place in the world you can get a decent Krembo.
Mweiman@aish.com - The freedom to talk to God wherever and whenever without being thought of as crazy.
- In no other place in the world are there garbage men with their Tzitzit hanging out.
- I felt God's presence in Israel all around me, especially in Jerusalem. Miracles occur daily.
sfrib@opic.gov - You don't have to travel long distances to see every topographical region. The desert, the Mediterranean, the mountains, Lake Kinneret, the Dead Sea. Everything exists in Israel, more beautifully than any place else in the world.
sfrib@opic.gov - The Kotel, the Western Wall.
- The soldiers.
- The vast majority feel deeply others' pain and joy. There is a unique sense of being part of a single community, which leads most people to feel together, whether it is a time of sadness or happiness.
- Meeting others from all over yet having the same common denominator our faith.
- December 25 is a completely ordinary day: people just going about their business. And December is a completely ordinary month. Xmas could come and go and you might not even notice it.
- Living in the States I sometimes feel like I don't belong, but in Israel I felt a sense of belonging and with other people sharing the same religion and culture. Being in Israel is being home. There is a great degree of comfort being in the land that God gave to us.
- Under Jewish rule, Israel is a free nation. It is significant to many religions and under Jewish rule all are free to visit and view the sites most dear to them. This would not be true under any other form of government and the history books reveal this to be true.
leobesser@att.net - Despite the recent violence, I felt safer in Israel than I do at my home in the United States, and I would not hesitate to come back with my children. I could walk the streets at night without fear, despite being unable to read or speak the language, which is something I would never do at home.
- The pages of the Bible come to life here, making it all so very real.
- Unlike New York or any other place in the world, I actually CARE what happens in Israel. Any person who dies, or is hurt, or was saved, is my brother or sister. I feel their happiness and pain as if they're part of my own body, or my own family.
deborah.haies@foxnews.com - Falafel makes me happy!
- The diversity of the people not only do they represent so many different religions (and sects within these religions), but they come from all over the world, speak more languages than I can count, and yet all have an incredible love for the Land.
brookler@a2i.com - The only foreign country you can visit, and feel totally at home.
deborah.haies@foxnews.com - Israel proves that anything is possible in this world.
- That you don't have to think twice about wearing a kippa to work.
- Every stone has its individual history, and it's a land full of beauty and prosperity.
shim_may24@yahoo.com - In Israel, I am not an observer of Jewish destiny in a strange country. Here, we are creating Jewish destiny.
- It's the place where God's presence can be felt more intensely than anywhere on earth.
- Israel is the embodiment of every Jew's hopes and dreams come true. It is God's very promise to us come true, our Homeland.
shalomkb@pacbell.net - I love the beauty and the everchanging scenery that surrounds you.
mcollis1@yahoo.com - The amazingly delicious food produce that is the best in the world (even the fresh stuff from California, where I current reside, pales in comparison); other ethnic treats include melawach, jachnun, kubaneh, shwarma, and falafel.
brookler@a2i.com - I love the hustle and the bustle of the people, their language and emotional manner.
mcollis1@yahoo.com - I am astounded by the growth and dynamics of its technological advances. Israel is one of the most vibrant countries in the world that is a leader in medicine, science, agriculture and in blending the past with the present and the future.
mcollis1@yahoo.com - Everyone talks on the buses.
- The State of Israel, its people and the Jewish people around the world are the ultimate survivors in a world filled with Jew hatred. No group of people in the history of mankind have faced Inquisitors, ghettos, pogroms, the Holocaust, quota systems, and various restrictions, etc. Despite every attempt to eradicate the Jewish people and the State of Israel, our people have survived and made extraordinary contributions to mankind.
millerrm61@hotmail.com - It keeps me constantly connected to my Judaism and "my people"! I have recently returned from a brief visit to Israel, and I love it even more now than before.
pinmad@aol.com - It's the land where God has placed His name.
KeWill777@aol.com - I was most amazed at the profusion of flowers growing amid rocks, and green grass in what once was desert.
ROMANOFFJ@aol.com - I love the people of Israel's diversity, resilience, humanity and ingenuity.
shainsha@aol.com - Dancing in the streets of Jerusalem during Sukkot.
- Middle Eastern hospitality the people are so kind and generous.
brookler@a2i.com - The ability to keep dozens of Mitzvot that you can't do anywhere else.
- Every taxi driver is a political pundit.
- The weddings burst with joy and everyone is invited.
- The whole country is cleaning for Passover and I can smell it in the air.
- The topography allows me to sun on the beach of Eilat in the morning, and ski on Mount Hermon the same evening.
- When I visit the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, I realize no other people in the world has such deep roots.
- Only 53 reasons? With 5 million Jews, there are 5 million things I love about Israel!

Astonishing Progress
The amount of progress Israel has made in such a short amount of time is astounding. A barren, backward place has been turned into a flourishing agricultural, scientific, and technological oasis. It is impressive what a leader of knowledge Israel had become, despite all the obstacles thrown at it.

A wonderful shining example to the world
In our world where diversity of cultures seems to be disappearing, Israel is a shining unique example of how an ancient nation can proudly regroup in its 4000 year old ancient land and keep its traditions alive - be it unique food, songs, customs, religious practices, and other practices - eg real devotion to family life ie real quality time at a set time during the week spent with family and friends is also a major plus binding the society (Shabbat is psychologically very good for the society). It is amazing that Israel is such a robust, successful and morally proud nation in the face of such uncompromising enemies who don't see the liberal western democratic way of life as sacrosanct and who don't support equality of opportunity for women and other groups traditionally treated as lesser people - Israel is inclusive of all within the Jewish framework/outlook on life. Israel proudly allows differences of opinion. Israel is refreshing in that today it seems to be one of the few countries that place the values of the nation above pure money making - the leaders and people of most other countries are obsessed with making money (to the detriment of other values) although while Israelis legitimately also want to make money, in Israel there is the bigger goal of maintaining a Jewish homeland that takes precedence, even if less money is to made. Israel is more than a refuge and religious centre for the Jews of the world - Israel is a shining example of a great society that unfortunately is being held back by the baseless hatred against it. The baseless hatred against Israel does no good for anybody, including the haters.

Israel is for lovers
How about the fact that Israel is just a damn cool place. Give me a night in a Tel Aviv beach looking over to Jaffa with a cool brew in my hand. It just doesn't get any better. I am not Jewish but the right for Israel to exist will always be sacrosanct to me and I would fight for it given the chance.

What a precious place! It is truly a gem and I long to go there again for a longer period (was there and just left a few days ago). Being in the country is like being in God's embrace. It was almost painful leaving. I love soo many things about it and it's people. I love you Jews! :) Shalom, Shalom, Shalom...
(50) yuval, January 18, 2010 12:37 PM
As Israeli i really love my country :)
it's really great place... and Israel won 22# in the list of the best countries to live in that made by the UN. Israel it's like a family, there is saying here "Kol Israel Ahim" (All Israel are brothers). maybe Israel it's the country with the biggest number of enemies, but it's also the most secured country in the world. nothing like 9/11 never happened here, and terrorists trying all the time... no single terrorist can enter Israel now... Israel secured from all sights, soldiers everywhere, best airports security and not everyone can enter Israel. you all welcomed in Israel =) and Jews, you welcome to move here :)
(49) Geowar42, January 9, 2010 6:29 PM

And there's Mikes Place - made me feel right at home on July 4th. I'm bringing the family back for a vacation soon. Viva la Israel ;)

I will stand for Israel!
I think it is better to say I love ISRAEL.I mean whats the matter with Christians and Muslims to hate Jews. And I condemn the ghastly holocaust that happened. What is much more important to people other than human lives? Did they think twice before killing people.I am an admirer of Israel and everyone loves Israel in India.I promise I will stand by and fight for Israel to prevent the holocaust from happening again!

Peace and freedom
Indians love Israel because of its philosophical, moral and scientific contributions to the world. Even though it has negligible contribution when compared to the Arab world, it was able to defeat many Arab Fascist nations in the 6-day war and it was able to safe guard its safety from giants like Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. REAL AMERICANS SUPPORT ISRAEL! REAL INDIANS WILL FIGHT FOR ISRAEL!
(38) Roby, December 6, 2008 8:12 AM
I live in the gulf
Israel is a great country and I greatly appreciate the Israelis for fighting a lone battle, while the so called "international community" keeps on criticizing you! Each of those nations should put itself into your shoes! Great country!

In Israel, everyone treats you like family. They'll help you pick vegetables at the market or invite you over for dinner even though you just met.
This is why I love Israel.

The only place where people feel real
In Europe people just talk themselves into the sky. It's a status-thing. But when something has to be done there is no-one to find.
(23) Michelle M. Dimitro Fisher, May 23, 2005 12:00 AM
It is nice time is slowly allowing people to open about their beliefs.
I have never been to Israel, but one day, G-d willing I will be married with a child and able to leave Palm Desert to visit. It is wonderful that people are slowly being able to open-up about their beliefs. Unlike my parents day and age where they believed no one should know who you are or what you believe. It is nice to know that gradually time is changing; it is okay to learn about this beautiful culture.
(22) Frances, March 30, 2003 12:00 AM
So much history. So much culture.
Israel is such a tiny piece of land. But it is OUR land. Hashem promised it to us, so now we can enjoy the rich religious, cultural and spiritual benefits that she has to offer.

People care
People, even strangers really care about you - (even though some think of it as meddling.) For example: everyone on the bus having a big debate about how I should get to my destination when overhearing that my friend and I were lost, and some even offering to show us the way.
(10) Anonymous, April 26, 2001 12:00 AM

Because I'm welcomed
None in my family is Jewish and that makes it so hard and difficult for them to understand that I have a burning desire since beginning of the 60ties for that little peace of Land called Eretz Israel. At the beginning I felt like a stranger, before entering a Shule, or Jewish Centre. The same when I was for the first time in Israel. But there is one thing, wherever it was at the end I left with the feeling and KNOWLEDGE that I was welcomed. I have received allways open doors, and that you only get when you are WELCOME, to the place where they greeting you with a big SHALOM. Thank you to let me into that place with the result that I made the decission to be a prosolyte.
Toodah Raba Emanuel
(6) Roy Taylor, April 26, 2001 12:00 AM
For all "Jews" and perhaps even more for "Jews By Choice," Israel is the land given them by G-d. The State of Israel, her people and Jewish people around the world are survivors in a world filled with learned hatred for Jewish people. No nation (people) in the history of mankind has ever been targeted to live in and under quota systems, ghettos, slave pogroms, the Holocaust, and many other low life restrictions. Despite every attempt to eradicate the Jewish people and the State of Israel, Jewish people have survived and made extraordinary contributions to mankind throughout the world. Israel is a Holy place where the Jewish people were selected by G-d to be a light unto all nations.
Beyond all of the differences that may stand between all of mankind, we are all the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We are all one family, with one land, and one destiny.... The nation of Israel is the home of the Jewish people. A land in which everyone can feel free and worship G-d freely. A land of great beauty filled with history for all people to love and enjoy and protect.

Everybody talks to everybody on the buses
On the buses in particular, after the news, everybody talks freely to everyone else and one can feel that we are truly one family

Israel is my true home
Israel is my true home. It is mine and I belong to it. I have lived in Iran, I am now living in the U.S. but I don't feel any place in the world is my true home except for Israel (although I have never lived in Israel).
(2) IGNACIO ARANA, April 25, 2001 12:00 AM
To Israel (Poem)
Israel is the land I long to see,
Its blue sky and the waters of its sea.
Sand, hills, wind, water, and life,
All to make it a home, all to become alive.
Israel, the land that saw the tears
Of its people for Absalon;
The land where strength and love met;
The land where people say SHALOM!
To thee, I shall never forget.
And though so far you seem to be,
In my heart so near,
In my mind, my dear,
Israel..You with me.
By Ignacio Arana.

Magnetic
Israel is like a magnet, always attracting a vast number of people. A higher spiritual place for us all. The energy that abounds in Israel is unparralled in the world.
