Hello,
While the world watches the ruins in Gaza, you return to your home which remains standing. However, I am sure that it is clear to you that someone was in your home while you were away.
I am that someone.
I spent long hours imagining how you would react when you walked into your home. How you would feel when you understood that IDF soldiers had slept on your mattresses and used your blankets to keep warm.
I knew that it would make you angry and sad and that you would feel this violation of the most intimate areas of your life by those defined as your enemies, with stinging humiliation. I am convinced that you hate me with unbridled hatred, and you do not have even the tiniest desire to hear what I have to say. At the same time, it is important for me to say the following in the hope that there is even the minutest chance that you will hear me.
I spent many days in your home. You and your family's presence was felt in every corner. I saw your family portraits on the wall, and I thought of my family. I saw your wife's perfume bottles on the bureau, and I thought of my wife. I saw your children's toys and their English language schoolbooks. I saw your personal computer and how you set up the modem and wireless phone next to the screen, just as I do.
I need you to understand me, us, and hope that you will channel your anger and criticism to the right places.
I wanted you to know that despite the immense disorder you found in your house that was created during a search for explosives and tunnels (which were indeed found in other homes), we did our best to treat your possessions with respect. When I moved the computer table, I disconnected the cables and lay them down neatly on the floor, as I would do with my own computer. I even covered the computer from dust with a piece of cloth. I tried to put back the clothes that fell when we moved the closet although not the same as you would have done, but at least in such a way that nothing would get lost.
I know that the devastation, the bullet holes in your walls and the destruction of those homes near you place my descriptions in a ridiculous light. Still, I need you to understand me, us, and hope that you will channel your anger and criticism to the right places.
I decided to write you this letter specifically because I stayed in your home.
I can surmise that you are intelligent and educated and there are those in your household that are university students. Your children learn English, and you are connected to the Internet. You are not ignorant; you know what is going on around you.
Therefore, I am sure you know that Qassam rockets were launched from your neighborhood into Israeli towns and cities.
How could you see these weekly launches and not think that one day we would say "enough"?! Did you ever consider that it is perhaps wrong to launch rockets at innocent civilians trying to lead a normal life, much like you? How long did you think we would sit back without reacting?
I can hear you saying "it's not me, it's Hamas". My intuition tells me you are not their most avid supporter. If you look closely at the sad reality in which your people live, and you do not try to deceive yourself or make excuses about "occupation", you must certainly reach the conclusion that the Hamas is your real enemy.
The reality is so simple, even a seven year old can understand: Israel withdrew from the Gaza strip, removing military bases and its citizens from Gush Katif. Nonetheless, we continued to provide you with electricity, water, and goods (and this I know very well as during my reserve duty I guarded the border crossings more than once, and witnessed hundreds of trucks full of goods entering a blockade-free Gaza every day).
Despite all this, for reasons that cannot be understood and with a lack of any rational logic, Hamas launched missiles on Israeli towns. For three years we clenched our teeth and restrained ourselves. In the end, we could not take it anymore and entered the Gaza strip, into your neighborhood, in order to remove those who want to kill us. A reality that is painful but very easy to explain.
You must lead a civil uprising against Hamas.
As soon as you agree with me that Hamas is your enemy and because of them, your people are miserable, you will also understand that the change must come from within. I am acutely aware of the fact that what I say is easier to write than to do, but I do not see any other way. You, who are connected to the world and concerned about your children's education, must lead, together with your friends, a civil uprising against Hamas.
I swear to you, that if the citizens of Gaza were busy paving roads, building schools, opening factories and cultural institutions instead of dwelling in self pity, arms smuggling and nurturing a hatred to your Israeli neighbors, your homes would not be in ruins right now. If your leaders were not corrupt and motivated by hatred, your home would not have been harmed. If someone would have stood up and shouted that there is no point in launching missiles on innocent civilians, I would not have to stand in your kitchen as a soldier.
You don't have money, you tell me? You have more than you can imagine.
Even before Hamas took control of Gaza, during the time of Yasser Arafat, millions if not billions of dollars donated by the world community to the Palestinians was used for purchasing arms or taken directly to your leaders bank accounts. Gulf States, the emirates - your brothers, your flesh and blood, are some of the richest nations in the world. If there was even a small feeling of solidarity between Arab nations, if these nations had but the smallest interest in reconstructing the Palestinian people - your situation would be very different.
You must be familiar with Singapore. The land mass there is not much larger than the Gaza strip and it is considered to be the second most populated country in the world. Yet, Singapore is a successful, prospering, and well managed country. Why not the same for you?
My friend, I would like to call you by name, but I will not do so publicly. I want you to know that I am 100% at peace with what my country did, what my army did, and what I did. However, I feel your pain. I am sorry for the destruction you are finding in your neighborhood at this moment. On a personal level, I did what I could to minimize the damage to your home as much as possible.
Instead of sinking into self-pity, build a flourishing and prospering country.
In my opinion, we have a lot more in common than you might imagine. I am a civilian, not a soldier, and in my private life I have nothing to do with the military. However, I have an obligation to leave my home, put on a uniform, and protect my family every time we are attacked. I have no desire to be in your home wearing a uniform again and I would be more than happy to sit with you as a guest on your beautiful balcony, drinking sweet tea seasoned with the sage growing in your garden.
The only person who could make that dream a reality is you. Take responsibility for yourself, your family, your people, and start to take control of your destiny. How? I do not know. Maybe there is something to be learned from the Jewish people who rose up from the most destructive human tragedy of the 20th century, and instead of sinking into self-pity, built a flourishing and prospering country. It is possible, and it is in your hands.
I am ready to be there to provide a shoulder of support and help to you.
But only you can move the wheels of history.
Regards,
Yishai, (Reserve Soldier)

sad
What a misguided moral sense! If you are at peace with everything your country did in this war, then why apologize? Why feel bad? You did right by protecting your country - including using someone else's house. The moment you apologize, you don't truly believe that your actions were just.
Protect your people and forget about the apologetics.

BEAUTIFUL
This is the sentiment I am sure of many. How is easy to understand that Palestinians can be so manipulated by their own leaders, but then look at the dictators of the world who keep their own people in poverty and subjugation and still have unbelievable public support. I wish all of Israel the safety and protection they deserve.Today I personally have begun a petition on We The People to request my nation the United States to form a military defense alliance with Israel. Defending in theory is not enough, the enemies of Israel should be made to understand that we will defend them on the field of battle too.

#61 Jt,
I didn't say they worship the same G-d. I said they worship a different interpritation of the same word. If all you know about G-d stems from the Torah, well for them all they know about G-d stems from the Koran. I agree with your basic contention that Islam is flawed most particularly because it promises reward for barbaric behaviour, and it is backward and it is a political tool, yes you're right... but in all my religious education I've never been taught a single reference about a "moon God". Islam may have appropriated that symbol from earlier pagan cults but I promise you that no Muslim thinks of the moon as their God, or God lives on the moon, or anything proposterous like that. Maybe there is some beauty in the moon shining light in the midst of the darkness of the night, that's about as far as the symbolism goes I suspect. As for the 'peace loving muslims' ... well I don't care much for that sort of pacifism. It's that same 'peace loving' pacifism that plagues the buddhist world. Sure, peace is better than conflict, if the conflict is pointless.. but if the conflict is about moving forward (for the realists), making the world better (for the sympathisers), moving closer to G-d (for the religious), or simply eradicating poverty and protecting the environment (for the practical).. then maybe the conflict is worthwhile. Well consider this, the children that grow up to be jihadists could have been doctors or teachers or farmers or construction workers for that matter. Their potential was snuffed out before they could reach their teens because they were taught to hate in order that they feel proud of themselves. Isn't there some line in the Torah about setting yourself apart and being blessed by G-d. I tell you, that's the root of their religious arrogance. They don't believe they were chosen, but they're determined to be more obedient nonetheless, and thereby earn G-d's favour. The problem is they've been given the wrong spiritual map. So you can blame the map, you can curse the one who drew it initially and you can curse everyone who didn't care enough to replace that map with the real thing, but you can never blame a child full of potential for believing that there is a G-d and falling into the trap of believing that his map is the right one. Not many Muslim children ever get a chance to re-examine whether or not that map was the right one in the first place. What am I doing, I'm not defending their behaviour, I'm not supporting their idiology, but I'm preventing you from slipping into the same hatred that infects them. See the potential in your fellow semites, or drag each other down for eternity, that's the price of competing for G-d's favour, it seems.

#56 and author
they do not worship the same G-d. the jihadis worship the death cult of allah. some distorted moon god idolatry that promises them paradise for killing jews and infidels. it is really a sick, fascist political ideology posing as a religion. once you understand that, it is very clear. as for 'peace loving muslims'...just where are they? why aren't they out in the millions protesting in the streets and demanding and end to the islamic violence all over the world? i'll tell you where they are: in their homes quietly or not so quietly supporting the global jihad. wake up and smell the jihad people. they don't have time for polite israeli soldiers or anyone with any humanity. they are the 21st century nazis. except they have religious fervor. a bad combination. don't like what you're reading. well, the truth can be disturbing. it's your wake up call. read: history of islamic antisemitism-bostom from time immemorial-peters stealth jihad-spencer

THe enemy
I'm not a Jew, I'm a Christian but I can assure you that there are many Christians standing with Israel. Praying for you. We know the Messiah's coming is so close. In Daniel and other scriptures we find that many of the countries mentioned are today Muslim countries. The Muslim's are fighting a war against "infidels" who do not believe in Allah. We know God is love and therefore they do not know Him. Sorry for all your pain.

a rebutal (to Anonymous) if I may
1. What's it called again? (I'm not jewish - so I'm not too familiar) - I think it's called "tekkun olam" (right?)... well God chose the Jews for tekkun olam (not the palestinians) (and it's not tekkun Israel, it's tekkun olam). 2. even 1000 militia (supposedly backed by Iran) could exterminate 1.5 million civilians if push came to shove. 3. people (these "muslim terrorists") are creatures of the same God you worship. They may worship another interpritation of the word, but that's not the fault of the common person. You can blame that on Islam itself, but not on the people who believe blindly and have not been educated sufficiently. 4. What tears mate? there's nothing here but anger that this sort of thing is still happening in our world. Our God is not happy that the knowledgeable call the stupid "stupid" even though they know there isn't a good school (or teacher - more to the point) in sight. Yes, they're stupid, but they're still human beings with potential. (take a stupid palestinian orphan and send him to your schools with your teachers and see what kind of a person you get in a few years). 5. Israel is not an ordinary country, it represents all our hopes for a future world. 6. Whether the IDF's actions are commendable or not (I believe they are), it is always wrong to buy an IDF cap because an army should never be proud of its work even when it liberates a people. It should always feel a mixture of professionalism and regret that it needs to exist. I know every soldier would rather be home with their family, so why don't we create a world that doesn't need more than 1 army. Perhaps that's going to cost a lot of blood, but that's what it means to repair the world.
(55) Yitz, February 5, 2009 11:02 AM
empathy for the Arabs of Gaza
The Arabs of Gaza voted in Chamas to run things. The fact is the Arabs have never really be honestly for peace. The Civilians killed in Gaza are responsibility of each and every Arab who has never honestly wanted Peaceful co Existence. There has never been sovereign West bank and the name Palestine was used primarily when the British were in the region. The Israelis have no reason to miss with the Arabs if the violence ceases.
(54) Yael S, February 5, 2009 10:22 AM
Why in the world would Aish decide to reprint this article which in my opinin is overly sympathetic to the Muslim terrorists on their website. I couldn't bare reading the aticle in its entirety. Oh, yes the poor terrorists, you know the bobms they carry while blowing us up are soooo heavy. I feel so bad for them, boo hoo!

Moshe Rosen's comments
Moshe Rosen is correct. However, it's easier to blame others for your troubles than to look in the mirror. The Muslims in general are good at blaming everybody else, but the Palestinians are the masters.

more positive feedback for this letter
I forgot to mention earlier that what I liked most about this letter was when this IDF soldier proposed, "Instead of sinking into self-pity, build a flourishing and prospering country." If only the Palestinians would avoid using their negative energy channeled in their PR machine in the Arab media and MSM across the world, that same energy could've been used to provide a more flourishing Palestinian state. After all, Israel has offered numerous opportunities for a 2-state solution, but the Palestinians still appear to live in self-pity. Imagine if they turned their image around and used their energy to create a functional Palestinian government and democracy, as opposed to blaming Israel for "the occupation". The group "Free Palestine" ought to think more positively, and remove the word "occupation" from their vocabulary and attitudes since Hamas and Fatah have been setting Palestinians and Israel back in the political efforts for the peace process. All in all, this is a very well-logical letter that needs to be viewed by more than those who are friends of Israel. After all, listening to one another and judging others favorably is a mitzvah.
(51) Wassim, February 4, 2009 4:38 PM
Fatah v Hamas
If memory serves me right, I read somewhere that it was the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade (reputedly more aligned with Fatah) who claimed responsibility for the rockets fired after this latest cease-fire. Seems to me like somebody else inside the Palestinian territories is trying to provoke the IDF into elliminating Hamas.

Your letter showed the true spirit of Israel not retribution but protection, not hate but help, not anger but forgivness and as we practice these ancient gifts our great G_D the great I AM WHO I AM will protect us all and give us peace.

Poor Wassim
Wassim - have you read what you have written? Why do you feel that Israel must get rid of Hamas? Why do the people of Gaza not rid themselves of Hamas. If there are a reported 1.4 million in Gaza and only 20,000 - 30,000 Hamas, why do the majority of those poor souls sit and do nothing but moan about their situation. Why not rise up, stand on your own two feet, take you own two hands and throw Hamas into the ocean, shove them down their tunnels, rid yourself of the vermin? Please, your tears do not impress me. I purchased and proudly wear my IDF hat! And you?
(48) Wassim, February 3, 2009 11:22 PM
Palestinians don't need your compassion...
Nice letter, good soldier, good army, good person... blah blah blah. People are still dying, enduring a hell imposed upon them by unrighteous leaders. What the people of Palestine need (whether they admit it or not) is for the Israeli government to elliminate HAMAS. Frankly, Israel is supposed to be such a light unto the world that stopping short of doing that doesn't cut it in my eyes. It's like saying, "we don't mind if Hamas exist as long as they don't fire rockets at us". Forgive me IDF, but that's not what I expect from Israel. If you really cared for these fellow human beings (they're not just "Arabs") - and I think you do but you're hesitating as well - then you ought to use your might to rid them of their cancer. If the whole world is a human body and Israel is the heart (or brain - take your pick!) then why prevent the cancer from just spreading to your heart rather than get rid of it from your entire body. That's what Israel is supposed to do for humanity, lest you forfeit your "chosen" status. or maybe you're just taking a little break for the sake of elections - that's understandable... fair enough.
(47) Selma Spizler, February 3, 2009 3:31 PM
I sincerely hope the person this beautiful letter was written to received it and acted on it. If only the citizens of Gaza would know who their real enemies are, perhaps they could live in peace.

BS"D TO GARY KATZ: WELL DONE BOY. YOU ARE A GENIUS. PEOPLE WHO LOVE KILL THEMSELVES TO HAVE 72 VIRGINS WOMEN, DON´T LOVE "GO-D", or "SPIRITUALITY"... PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO SACRIFICE AND MURDER THEIR OWN CHILDREN, THEY ARE "NO HUMANS..." PERE ADAM, "MERE BEASTS". THEY SAY TO THEIR CHILDREN TO DIE 4 , AND THEN THEY HIDE THEMSELVES IN TUNNELS, or RUN LIKE COWARDS TO IRAN, ARE NO MORAL BEINGS "AT ALL" TO ALL OF YOU: MAKE THIS POINT CLEAR: PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING AND LOVE TO KILL THEMSELVES TO HAVE "72 VIRGINS WOMEN", DON´T REALLY LOVE "GO-D", or "SPIRITUALITY"... THEY LOVE "OTHER THINGS..." THAT´S WHAT THEY ARE... THAT´S WHAT THEY ARE...

We are very proud of our IDF! May Israel be blessed and protected continously by the One G-d. Yishai, you're a pure jewish soul. I believe that you have written this article straight from your heart - with no drafts, in no time, and in the holy language. As for the Gazans, may you have the strength to overthrow the evil rulers of your nation.
(44) Leah, February 3, 2009 9:50 AM
This is not a first for IDF soldiers to leave messages to their absent hosts. I know of many soldiers who stayed in the homes of strangers to rest and tried to respect the owner's home. During the most recent Lebanese war some troops only had ammunitions and tech devices dropped in their zones and were left longer than their supply of rations. So, cupboards were opened and pots heated to cook pasta or canned food and the like. Some soldiers left notes in unassuming places--between books on a shelf, others left a few american dollars inside medicine cabinets. I wonder what the families thought when they returned, were they angry? sad? or surprised? I wonder if these stories of empathy and gestures of good will will be seen as such. Will the children in these homes carry these messages with them through life? We are all more alike than we can imagine just like the author suggests. It's just too bad that we'll never get letters in return.

Response to K.A. Lehnsdal (response 30)
You state that your forefathers lived there for generations. Who do you think was there before them? Remember King David? How about the Temples that existed before your religion even came to be? If you want to continue to trade history lessons, why didn't your forefathers stay put? There's over a million "Israeli Arabs" whose forefathers stayed, when Israel again became a state. Did your forefathers believe the Arab admonitions to leave so that the Jews could be more efficiently slaughtered? Perhaps they fled when they heard the Arab propaganda that Jews were killing thousands of civilians and raping the women. You blame the creation of Israel on the Europeans who perpetrated the Holocaust, but were your forefathers conspiring with the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem to start a Middle East Holocaust (he had met with Hitler for planning purposes)? Did your forefathers participate in events such as the Hebron massacre (1929)? Do you think that your people are somehow different from the hundreds of millions who have been displaced by war, over the centuries? That your people are the only ones who have a "right of return" to land last occupied by their grandparents? That your people deserve more consideration than the hundreds of thousands of Jews who fled Arab countries? Israel settled these Jews. Why haven't the Arab countries settled your people? Why should your people get any more attention than worse off refugees in places like Darfur? Why should the UN help you more than starving people in Zimbabwe? Because your people name soccer fields after suicide bombers? Because Hamas provokes the militarily superior Israel, hoping that civilian casualties will galvanize support and attention? You complain that there is no land to work, but your people destroyed the beautiful greenhouses Israel left to you. You are a welfare state, but have no shortage of workshops producing rockets and bombs. Sadly, because your people teach their children to hate and to aspire to be suicide bombers, your next generation might be even worse off.
(42) Tamar, February 3, 2009 3:49 AM
Yeah I agree that the message is very well written and shows another point of view that in many countries doesn't exist. Sure is hard for Israeli people to get use to this difficult way of life, specially in the south. Also the Gaza strip where so many innocent people must suffer big damage for some terrorist and wrong country management. Everywhere can appear the brainwash but this message seem true and a personal experience, way to behave in difficult moments. Hope more people have the hope to generate peace and do something for it even is hard and needs to get use. Have some israeli friends and visited Israel before tree years and saw very open people mind general. shalom
(41) Berk, February 3, 2009 2:38 AM
Agree
I think the writer of this, is my friend, also the winner of int. bible contest, Yishai Gispan, but I can't be sure. Anyway, I think that this message also explains how I feel about this conflict. Ufortunately because of media, at least in Turkey, people are blinded by their own ideas can't see the facts. I wish there was a way to put this on a Turkish newspaper.

To Me (supposed teacher) Re Propaganda
So sorry you can't see beyond your personal prejudices to take the lessons so sincerely written to heart. If you are indeed an English teacher, it is apparent you haven't had the good fortune to educate true writers. A natural writer would not require "several drafts" to compose this letter, passion, fluency, and excellent writing skills do the job quite nicely. I'm sure it was proof-read and edited for syntax prior to publishing. You're "I'm an American with no ties to either the Arab world or the Jewish world" is a good try, but oh so transparent. If you envy the class, dignity, and humanity of Israeli soldiers, transform that envy into something constructive, and contribute your "teaching skills" to those who sorely lack humanity and tolerance. Be safe...

Palestinians it may cost you your life...
Nobody likes to die for freedom. People in the US died for freedom. People in the US died to fee slaves. People in the US died to keep us free from evil hitler. There is a time for the people in each country to fight for freedom in it's own country. You will have to make this choice to kick the haters out. Two ways. You do it yourself and many will die. or you let Israel do it. If Israel does it for you, you must say thanks, and if other countries give you money again you must have a government that will not use it again for arms. A government that will use it for productive business, helping your own people be employed. Israel is not your problem, it is revenge, hate, or following a bad party for fear of your life. The world loves you and wants you free. The world does not see all that Hamas is doing to you, some of the public sees in private what is happening to you by ones who control you. Pray. No matter what religion you are, pray that G_d, will help you from Hamas or other militant parties. You deserve a better life. The world wants you to have a better life, but the world does not want terror, rockets, violence, but you must act against Hamas. Raise you kids to love, not hate. Don't give them guns but tell them that you are changing, and give them an example of love, and you must have courage. Thank Israel, help Israel. -Bill

Display this letter in papers and media around the world
Fantastically well written, sincere and totally the truth. So now instead of just publishing this where you only get support (i.e. Jewish support groups) this needs to be submitted to major newspapers and media around the world, including in Arab dailies, etc. Also, why not have an Israeli plane drop this letter in pamphlets over Gaza. Certainly a few people there would read it.

a flourishing country
Dear stranger, I do not know from which part of the World you, - or your parents, - came to Palestina... My forefathers have lived in Palestina for many generations... -- we have worked the land... -- we have lived and died in Palestina, - our land...! Then due to Europeans' cruel treatment of your people during several hundreds of years, - unknown politicians in New York, - in the socalled United Nations, - give to your people more than half or our country, - where then your fathers and yourself should live... My family, - and several thousands of other Palestinean families, - have had to leave our land, - and to settle in Gaza, - where we have no land to work, - and are due to receive our daily bread from international organisations...! That is a pity...! You see, we, - the Palestineans, - want our country back... It is a pity that your people has suffered so much in Europe... ...but that gives no right to the United Nations to take half of our land, - and give it to your people...! Thanks for taking care of my computer...!
(29) Bracha, February 2, 2009 10:40 AM
Beautifully written and so true
Yishai, God bless you for all you did and for taking the time to express such an important topic of where the residents of Gaza stand, their input and responsibility in this horrendous situation of Hamas control, human shields, lack of concern for their peoples' future and a populations basic need for a substantial infrastructure (which was appropriately funded). I truly hope the Gaza residents can appreciate your respect and kindness towards them. Bless you and your family. Am Yisroel Chai

what is the truth about the killing of a Palestinian family - is this fact or fiction.
Israel should very clearly come out and state what occurred with the incident of a family being killed while surrendering - holding-up white flags. Is this fact or fiction?

Goodness of our people and the opposite of the arabs
Beautifully written letter to the Palestineans who live in the occupied house. Shows the inate humanity of the Israeli's and the Jewish people. But sad to say, the typical Palestinean arab is unreachable, regardless of class or education. They have been inculcated with hatred for so many years that they will allow themselves and their progeny to live in the worst conditions imaginable in the foolish belief that somehow they will defeat the Israeli's and reoccupy what they mistakenly believe is their homeland. Israel must look at and treat the Gaza Palestineans as their enemy. Their leaders do not recognize Israel and are sworn to its destruction.Gaza should have been razed. Why does Israel allow any supplies to pass through the border into Gaza? Why do they allow the enemy to receive food and power? They only thing arabs understand is force. If they continue agressive acts toward Israel, then Israel has the legal and moral right to destroy Gaza. They shouln never have stopped the fighting. The world be damned. JMO

The only thing I can say: Your ethics are extremely high and cannot be conpare to any other nation. G-d bless you and G-d bless Israel,

Yishai- very humanely put. As a fellow Army reservist in the US Army Medical Corps, also recently redeployed and on active duty, I can almost understand your words. Almost in the sense that I am not in harms way. I am not being shot at, afraid for my life. I am away from my family though, alone and lonely for my normal life. Your words and thoughts are what spearates the Jewish people from many others in the world, not just our Semite brethren, that you are defending your life, your freedom and your family, and compassionately concerned for your enemies. Not reporting those missile firings, not being responsible for the safety and security of your neighbors, makes you complicit, if not just as responsible for these terrorist acts, as the Hamas "soldiers." Thank you and your colleagues for your service to the Jewish people.

What a great essay
What a great essay. I'm proud to be part of the people of Israel.

Well put
I especially like the part where he essentially tells the Palestinians to quit whining and start doing. Asking the Palestinians to boot Hamas will be feasible when the majority of Palestinians no longer support terrorism. Every poll taken shows shockingly huge percentages of their population who have no problem with suicide bombings and the rest. They cannot advance as a society or as a culture until they shed that barbarism.

We are truly a "light unto the nations" when Israeli soldiers such as above can go against human nature and treat the enemies possesions and home with dignity and respect. kol hakavod im more proud than ever to be jewish

Yishai, you (IDF) are in my mind and my hart. You are heroes and Israel is a country of dreams coming true. Shalom

Hello Yishai, Your thoughts may be honest and noble and like the vast majority of the Jews in this world the longing for peace. Israel is MORE THAN justified in defending itself. There are millions in this world who have great regard and respect for the brave Israelies but are too afraid to speak out because of fear of revenge from the FANATICLA MUSLIM religion. Majority of the political violence in this world - Muslims are involved. The second FACT is the greed of the human race. The whole world tries constantly to appease the muslims because of the black gold - Oil. Any born muslim is afraid to renounce his religion because of cruel punishment not only for himself/herself but also the "innocent" family. I beleive that it is very important for the people to Israel to remain strong and retaliate appropriatly, even if our "coward-world" does not openly support its actions. There is no religion in the world which is as fanatical, repressive and violent as the muslim religion. As you rightly said the change has to come from inside - from inside the muslim world. I sincerly wish Israel strenght and courage to carry on under such "impossible" circumstances. If anything can stop muslim-terror ruling this world then it is the Chilrend of Israel. Friend of Israel Sholom Soli

It is because of you and all those like you -- the majority of the IDF soldiers -- that this country is worth all the effort it takes to go on here.

Moving
Nicely said, Yishai, nice thoughts and probably even said in pure belief. That's what makes this letter honoured. If you're at peace with what your politicians did, then you probably aren't involved much into politics... Yet the wheels of history which you mentioned are hardly to be moved by the Gaza resident and his friends alone. These wheels wait for us, the Jews and the Israelis, since a long time, too and there will be need much more than only oil to make the turn again. For both sides must take in account the principle: If I won't do the first step, who will do it for me? And if not now, so when?

response
it was a beatiful letter, similar article appeared in Gazeta wyborcza, describing victimhood and selfpitty,of Palestinians. The same essence.Very right.World is being cheated by arabic media, and Hamas leaders are sitting and laughing. They make money, palestinians are suffering, and our soldiers are losing lives...What an irony and cynicism, but it will end and world will thank us for standing up to terror. Stay well, Elizabeth

Yosher koach to this soldier!!
This article should be publicized in print, in newspapers and online (broader than this site) so that many people can read it. The truth is that most people want a quiet, happy, safe life for themselves and their families. If Gazans reflect on their quality of life and the deplorable state of affairs in Gaza, the only logical conclusion is that Hamas is to blame. If Gazans concentrated on building infrastructure instead of smuggling weapons, imagine where they could be as a society? I would like to thank this hayal (soldier) for his service and the insights expressed in this article. Yosher koach to you and may you return safely to your family and everyday life.

Excuse me while I throw up
I came on Alyah from England 46 years ago on my own. Ever since I've lived here we've been trying to show how nice we are, while the arabs behead a jew and show it proudly to the whole world over the internet. Let's try being nice to each other for a change. That's what will bring peace.

Propaganda
I'm an American with no ties to either the Arab world or the Jewish world. But this sounds like just the same old propaganda that everyone has always used. Especially since it's being printed in newspapers. It's well done, very convincing. I doubt it was originally left in someone's house: as an English teacher, I can tell that this was composed over a long period of time and required several drafts.

Translate to Arabic
Hopefully, this candid letter gets translated into Arabic so the home owner and other Gaza residents can read it. A very thoughtful letter.

beyond the choir
I hope this was also submitted to Arabic,Farsi and Urdu news news publications with special emphasis on those who can relate directly. Let all with brains realize the truths within the letter assuming, as I am, that this is indeed based on actual circumstances.

A gate was opened .
This is a fantastic oportunity to reach out to the palestinian people, and to remind them that our politicians are not capable of reaching peace, but we are.

(4) Avraham Broide, February 1, 2009 9:44 AM
economic sanctions
This article omits an important fact: Because Hamas (and perhaps the majority of Palestinians under its rule) refuses to recognize Israel (for religious reasons that Jews obviously disagree with) Gaza has been under economic sanctions for a number of years that are strangling its development. Its not simply Hamas is squandering money on weapons. Although Hamas' source motivation is religious, it is inaccurate to omit the economic blockade factor.

go the IDF!
Well-written and heartfelt, let's hope the right people read it and take action to make Gaza a homeland, and not a staging post for war.

Great response to the distortions in the MSM and Arab media!
This was a very excellent response to the distortions and false, empty charges made in the MSM and Arab media outlets! The notion of disproportion is essentially a myth towards those who are willing to defend themselves from years of rocket fire attacks. Otherwise, Israel would be more forgotten like other nations that suffer more greatly in the world.

A Light Unto the Nations
Profound! May our continued exposure to abject hatred by Muslims, anti-Semites and international media not diminish our mission to be a moral beacon for the rest of the world. Yishai has passed a difficult test. I hope G0d will give me the strength to do likewise, should I be similarly tested. Thank you Yishai and the IDF and reservists for your sacrifices, and your continued willingness to battle for our very survival!
