Golda Meir: Iron Lady of the Middle East

Revered by some, reviled by others, Israel’s first female prime minister never forgave herself for her decisions in 1973.

One can only pray for a Golda to be PM of Israel

Like many others I can only pray for another Golda Meir to arise and become PM of Israel because, with G-d Himself, that is what Israel needs now.

I have always loved Golda and admired her chutzpah. Yes,
she made a mistake. Who doesnt ? Nobody perfect. It was costly however Israel would not have been in the position it was without her work pre 1973 She was under extreme pressure from her advisers who in my opinion have an immense share of the blame

Golda was a great woman

There is no question that Golda was a great woman with many remarkable achievements. It is unfortunate that often people are remembered for something that went wrong, and in Golda's case her error of not launching a preemptive strike cost many lives. Still there can be no doubt that she was integral in the founding of the state of Israel to which we owe her a large debt of gratitude,

A Great, But Flawed, Woman

Golda Meier was a great woman, but flawed. I was in the audience at the UN Security Council when she defended the abduction of Adolf Eichmann from Argentina and was proud of her speech that day. And left out of the presentation was her time as Israeli Ambassador to the USSR when she went to the Moscow synagogue and was surrounded by thousands of Jews and said to them, "Ah dank fur Yidden gebliben," "Thank you for remaining Jews." I think this event began the process of dismantling the Soviet Union! However, like many given great power Golda made many mistakes. Her embrace of the Africans was a waste of time--the experts Israel sent to Africa could have been used at home developing new industries as Israeli experts are doing today. Golda should have read "Plunket of Tammany Hall" on (the lack of) gratitude in politics. I hope Bibi has better luck, for luck is all that's involved, certainly not gratitude. And, as was mentioned at length, Golda has to take the responsibility for the lack of perpetration for the Yom Kippur War. There were too many intelligence reports to ignore here and her ignoring them is reminiscent of how Stalin ignored reports from Richard Sorge in Japan and Leo Trepper's Red Orchestra in Western Europe as well as the German Communist deserter who warned of not only the impending attack but its date and time. She did what decency required and resigned (unlike Stalin). Finally, her portrayal by Ingrid Bergman was absolutely terrific. As her daughter said when she received the Emmy for the miniseries, Ms. Bergman (despite her role in Casablanca) was never close the the Jewish world but she really got into the character in her last screen role, albeit the small screen.

Golda should be remembered as a legendary determined human female hero

Golda Meir = a female politician with enormous courage and resilience, also with a huge heart and lots of common sense. A person which all of humanity must respect.

She did make a wrong decisio.

But why did HaShem allow it to happen. It's said .The Guardian of Israel neither slumber nor sleeps. A very expensive lesson since many lives were lost. admirable lady who stepped down unlike leaders of today. Why did you not mention Erik.sharon

Inspiring Legacy

Her good decisions helped build a stronger Israel. Likewise- her “mistakes” were for the good of Israel as well. All she did was ordained by one higher than herself, and was for the GOOD of Israel. Divine miracles happen when human effort fails.
