Israel's Security Checkpoints and Border Wall: A Reality Check

The disruption and inconvenience is offset by the lives being saved.

A Torah Point

This video makes compelling points. On the other hand, when Moses sends the spies to scout out Israel, he tells them to check, "Do the people live in open cities or walled cities." Rashi explains that open cities mean they are not afraid of anyone. Walled cities are a sign of fear.

Walls may be a good short term solution, but in the long run, they embolden, and in this case frustrate, the enemy. The result? Thousands of rockets come over the walls, along with fire-kites and fire-balloons, and I have to explain to my kids that the walls they see are because we have lost the ability to live in peace with the people on the other side. Having lived in Israel before and after there were walls, things were much better before there were walls. The walls were a short-sighted reaction to a short period of time when we let security get out of hand.

A country with one of the most powerful armies in the world should be able to turn off the electricity when people under enemy control misbehave, rather than having to resort to walls, which lead to missiles and fire-kites and finally to soldiers having to shoot-to-kill.

Turn off the power? Isn't that collective punishment? What will the world say? Well, we have generously supplied everyone's hospitals with backup generators, so it's not like anyone would get hurt. Just inconvenienced. Let the world accuse our politicians of collective punishments that hurt no one, rather than winding up with no alternative to having young soldiers in one of the world's most powerful armies being ordered to shoot-to-kill fire-kiters.

I do believe Arab parents would prefer not having to explain to their children why they live behind a wall. I certainly would prefer not having to explain to my children what we are so afraid of, given the REALITY CHECK that we are a world-class powerful, brilliant, truth-seeking, life-loving people.

Israel is far from the only country with a security wall

Very well done informative video - thank you. I think many imagine Israel as the only country with a security wall - in fact there are many more - it's just that Israel gets all the bad press about it. Keep up your good work -

Just the Point

The people who complain of the checkpoints do so exactly because they save Israeli lives. These people want all Israelis - and often all Jews - dead.
