Origins of the Word Palestine

We often hear claims that Palestinians are "native" or indigenous to the land of Israel, but does history back this up? It's worth taking a look.

Depends on Definition

If you mean an independent Arab state of that name, then no, there never was such an entity. It should be pointed out that the name Palestine was used primarily by Christians and Christian Europeans because it derived from Rome, which eventually became Christian. Moslem documents do not use the name Palestine until the 20th century; to them it was "greater Syria".
In the 20th century increasing contact between Moslem and Christian worlds and the development of an international law encompassing all peoples led to the worldwide adoption of the name Palestine for the region.
