Whoever had any part in producing the new HBO 10 part series teasingly titled “Our Boys” should be profoundly ashamed – and whoever is misled into believing that they will have an opportunity to see a fair re-creation of the events in 2014 that began with the kidnapping and murders of three Israeli teenagers leading up to the Gaza war of that horrible summer deserves a fair warning: This is perhaps one of the most outrageous and deceitful distortions of a historically significant moment in the story of Israel’s struggle with barbaric acts of terrorism.
The way the story played out in fact begins with three 16-year-old religious Israelis, Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar, and Naftali Fraenkel, (full disclosure: Naftali was my cousin) deciding to hitchhike at Alon Shvut in Gush Etzion. Picked up by Arabs, they almost immediately realized they were being kidnapped and one of them was able surreptitiously to call the police. The police heard gunshots but didn’t know anymore. The entire country joined in a paroxysm of fear, prayer and hope. The mood of Israel was perhaps the finest example of its potential for unity, total and complete caring and sharing as one national family.
The three-week countrywide search for the boys and the passage of days seemed interminable. The ending, finally finding the bodies of the three victims, brought unparalleled grief and mourning not only to all Israelis but to Jews around the world. The thought that three young innocents could suddenly and inexplicably no longer carry on with their lives, that their families would no longer hug them or watch them grow to maturity touched a national nerve and their murders became traumatic for a whole people.
Surely anyone choosing to make a documentary-type series would have an inordinate amount of material for a profoundly moving movie. More, these three teenagers were exemplary and unique with fascinating stories about their special talents and their almost saintly character. Their parents, too, were people of extraordinary achievements and the ways in which they subsequently dealt with their tragedies were the basis for countless numbers of inspirational interviews and articles.
None of what I suggested made it into HBO's “Our Boys.” Not the boys, not the parents. In fact the story as HBO chooses to tell doesn’t even begin with its true beginning. You see there was another tragedy that followed. Three days after the revelation of the murder of the three Israelis a 16-year-old Palestinian, Mohammed Abu Khdeir, was the innocent victim of a revenge killing by three crazed Jews, a murder that horrified the entire country.
Israelis unfortunately are not immune to isolated crimes of terrorism. What makes us different in a world of violence and extremism is that we do not glorify terrorism, nor do we respond to it with joyous celebration and the distribution of sweets to children. Jews who commit acts of terrorism are not rewarded with lifelong stipends for themselves and their families nor do they have schools and public places named after them in their honor. They are punished by law, as were the killers of Mohammed Abu Khdeir. The two minors found guilty of Mohammed’s murder were respectively sentenced to life and 21 years imprisonment and the third, not a minor, was sentenced to life in prison and an additional 20 years.
With the title “Our Boys” many people were teased into thinking that this would be the story of three innocent Israeli victims. The movie, however, begins only after the death of the three boys. No actors play their parts. No emotional connection with the viewers is ever established. That would have made them identifiable victims – teenagers we come to care about before their brutal slayings. The story only starts after they are buried. Nothing is shown about the three-week search in vain or the frantic pain and worrying of the families. Short snippets of TV news reports give us cold facts. And then we get what for the producers is the real focus of the story. You see, dog bites man isn’t really that interesting, but man bites dog – and Orthodox “settlers” are guilty of the murder of an innocent 16-year-old Palestinian, well that’s really a story that deserves full Hollywood treatment!
Viewers never get a chance to see my cousin, his two friends or their Jewish parents. Instead you are given the chance to only empathize with the heartbreaking story of the Arab family and hate their son’s crazy killers.
And that is the real meaning of the title “Our Boys.” It doesn't refer to the three Israeli victims – we hardly got to know them, nor did we ever have a chance to learn anything about their killers. “Our Boys” are the villains, the crazed Israeli who murdered Mohammed and his settler accomplices, who were so ably acted that we will never forget. Never mind the bigger context that these perpetrators were a despicable rarity that shocked the country and got the punishment they deserved, while the murders of the three yeshiva boys fall into a tragic pattern of ongoing terrorism to this day glorified and celebrated by Arab leadership.
"Our Boys" is a 10-part series that manages to turn a Jewish tragedy into a condemnation of Israeli society. Woe to those who fail to see the hypocrisy of those responsible for this despicable misrepresentation of truth.

thx for saying what so badly needed to be said
The production is riveting, which makes this show all the more dangerous; You would think most people know that murder of innocents is an ongoing tragedy that is rewarded by our enemies while this retaliation was such an aberration.. the ratio of terror related incidents that Arabs initiate to that which Jews initiate is probably 1000;1 or larger..but most people won't know or care about that.. just wondering if there is any tv or film prod funding for non leftist producers..doesn't seem like it; the fact that the genesis of this script was NY Times should come as no surprise whatsoever

I still disagree after watching the entire series
The series was made by Israelis and the dialogue is in Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles. The entire story is a tragedy in the original sense of the word: decent men with a fatal flaw, reacting to the horrific murder of three fellow Jews, commit an equally horrific murder of a similar boy, but for the fact he is not a Jew but an Arab. The main character is Simon, the Shabak investigator, who has the unenviable task of getting justice for the murdered Israeli Arab. And he is a hero because he does this difficult job with integrity and humanity. Simon and his colleagues treat the family of the Arab teen with respect and compassion, belying media reports of callous and evil Israelis. He also treats the Jewish suspects with respect and professionalism, despite his growing dismay as he learns what happened. I think anyone who follows Israeli news would remember the facts of this case. This dramatic series pulls back the curtain of the investigation. I stand by my original impression. The dead, all 4 of them, were our boys. The underage perpetrators are our boys. We need more men and women like Simon.

Murder of 3 Israeli teenagers by Arabs, is used to condemn Israel -- what else is new!
I lived in an Arab country for too long to be surprised, or sensitized to the fact that everything will be inevitably twisted / stretched, one way or another, to 'depict' the unfairness of Israel. Even the kidnapping and murder of 3 Israeli teenagers!

Our Boys
My last comment has not been printed but I commend and agree with Belle.
(91) Belle, September 6, 2019 1:39 PM
I find the series sympathetic
I humbly disagree with your analysis. At the onset the program does show the anguish of the family and the nation after the kidnapping and death of the three young boys. As a lawyer what I applaud is the analysis of Israel's adherence to Justice. Rather than ignoring the death of the young also innocent Arab boy the show gives the police work to bring the guilty parties to account. There is a fairness in showing how the police brush off the first attempted kidnapping. There is a showing of sympathy by the police investigator, who we are show was reared in our religious tradition, to the Arab parents of the murdered youth. There is showing of how the father of the slain Arab youth resists the youth protests trying to use his son's body for a violent protest. I am not Israeli but I look at this series as showing the goodness of being a part of our religious tradition and pursuing the admonition, Justice, Justice, shall you pursue.

Total respect for President Rivlin -TUNE OUT THE INCITEMENT
After PM Netanyahu came out with claims of antisemitism and requests for a boycott against Israeli channel 12 because of this series, President Rivlin implored all Israelis to avoid extreme statements and take Responsibility.
If you read the thread here you will see just how easily people can be stirred up, incited to where emotion takes control over reason, and all wisdom is abandoned. Total respect to President Rivlin. Netanyahu and Trump can learn a lot from his fine example.
The entire Jewish People mourned the loss of the boys that summer. This series was in no way attempting to take away from that. The voices of the creators show that, and some of the station's reporters needed security because of the backlash. That is a true disgrace, and proves the point about aggression, emotions, incitement that leads to tragedy.
(90) David Leach, September 6, 2019 4:25 AM
The writer misses the point of the series.
My sympathies to the author on the loss of his cousin but that is not the point of the series. I have watched all the episodes shown on US TV so far. To me, the story is about how the Israeli authorities on the local level and higher up interact with the Palestinians. Who believes who. How far they will go to find the killers of the Palestinian youth when they think they are Arab, when they realize they may be Jews and how the youth's being gay affects his family, community and the Israeli authorities.

BDS from HBO!
The only thing HBO understands is the almighty dollar and, I guess, a serious distortion of truth. With this Hollywood twisted story of "Our Boys," HBO has sunk to new level of, at best, ignorance and at worse, anti-Semitic propaganda. My guess is that this was made in Iran and perhaps financed by the the BDS movement. Time to give HBO a taste of BDS. I urge all HBO subscribers to contact them and cancel your subscriptions.

Jewish Israeli Directors
Both Orthodox, one no longer observant. Not made in Iran. Not funded by BDS. They have given many interviews and you come away understanding more about their choices.
(88) Joe Salama, September 4, 2019 11:16 PM
Everyone should cancel their HBO susbscription that the only way you can impact them if less viewers do cancel then hopefully they can become accountable about what they produce but you need a large number of individuals to comply

very disapointed in HBO and their presentation, focusing on the poor Arab family
I am in the middle of watching this erroneous tale of a tragedy for Israel and the poor families that lost their children. It now at this point that I have reached in the series its going on and on about what the Mainly father of the arab boy who has obviouly been murdered in a horrible way, with the investigation intimating that Jews don't murder in the tortourous way that has been noted. yes i agree there are crazys amongst Jews, muslims , christians etc but we all know the Jewish people throughout the world are pro-life and do not glamourize or do torture or retaliation in the manner that terrorists of other religeons do. at this point after this article pointing out the HBO version of these heionious crimes, i will not continue watching , particularly with the ongoing growth of Anti-semitism throughout the world and USA...epecially in California where i live and have all my life
please excuse the typo's, rushing and no time to correct

Article articulately and accurately sums up the media’s ongoing bias against Israel!
The Rabbi very succinctly makes the case for how unbalanced the media is against Israel! The “cycle of violence” equivocation the media continuously spins about situations like this are unrelenting! G-d Bless the Rabbi for taking the time to bring this to the attention of the Jewish public(hope it reaches a A GENERAL PUBLIC as well) and G-d Bless President Trump for trying to change these false PC narratives, as well!!

Israeli actors?!!?
Why did the Israeli actors so willingly participate? Why weren’t we warned by “someone,” anyone?!!?
(83) Elise, September 3, 2019 9:47 AM
I am watching the series
I am watching the series and the story is about the murder investigation into the killing of the Arab boy. That is starts with the killing of the Israeli teens is how the entire event began. We all know what happened with the 3 boys. We all know that it ended up with a war.
Why is it so hard for you to deal with the fact that Jews, so-called religious Jews at that, perpetrated this crime?
The story is how the state of Israel investigated the crime and brought the killers to justice. Why is this so hard for you to deal with? It is a good story and shows Israel in a great light. Equality under the law.
David, September 6, 2019 2:39 AM
Calm down!
I agree. How many people commenting have seen all 10 episodes? Unless you work for HBO, I doubt anyone has. There is nothing in the series that says that the death of the Israeli teens was a good thing!! The Palestinian teen was not a terrorist. You cannot sympathize with his father and mother, neither of whom are terrorists, either? My impression of what message this series is trying to teach is that for any peace to exist between Israelis and Palestinians, both sides must reject extremists. That is exactly why Hamas kidnapped and murdering the three Israeli boys. They knew that act would make peace between Israelis and Palestinians more difficult.
(82) Anonymous, September 3, 2019 2:45 AM
I won’t watch this propaganda!
I missed the first 3 episodes, but happen to start watching it tonight. It disturbed me, so I googled what this was about. I will not watch this program that is so anti Semitic. HBO should be ashamed of themselves.
chaya, September 3, 2019 9:22 AM
Ceder is receiving death threats - it is enough !!!!
This film was intended to show what happened to the Palestinian boy, the incitement and rage and what it can lead to. Two of the film- makers are Israeli Jews. Both from Orthodox backgrounds. Vengeance is not the way - some Jewish youth today, engage in revenge in what is known as price tag attacks in West Bank.
Thete is no "self -hating" here, there is the showing of the other side, the pain of that family, the officer trying to contain emotions so this would not happen.
The hatred has to stop. This is the month of Elul, may I suggest everyone go inward and think about Returning to Hashem.
(81) tania appell, September 3, 2019 12:33 AM
I never did understand how the 3 boys lives were only in the first show.
After watching 4 episodes, now I understand why I kept watching it. I was looking for closure between the 3 boys and the ARAB boy. I did not understand why so many episodes were about the ARAB boy and not the 3 angels that were murdered.

HBO - Our Boys
How sad to hear (I do not have HBO) that a skewed version was produced not true to the facts. Not surprising! There should be a great effort on the part of Israeli and Diaspora Jewish commentators to mass a campaign to expose this travesty.
It would have been better to have a neutral person to illuminate this outrage. In addition, to make a more powerful effect, Rabbi Blech should not push his new book when writing this article. It gives ammunition to our adversaries.
(78) Ned, September 2, 2019 5:08 PM
I agree with Rabbi Blech
Rabbi Blech makes excellent points. His points further extend to so much of what is passed off as entertainment, which in fact is used to push a horrible and dishonest agenda. Unfortunately that agenda is often: Israel is evil, Orthodox Jews have no better morality than any average thug, the U.S. is evil, police are the bad guys, the US military is evil, etc. The heroes appear on the other side. After we write to HBO to express our dissatisfaction with their horrible story-line, it is also an opportunity for each of us to tune out all this garbage that pollutes normal society.

Its important to note that they didn't "decide to hitch hike". Everyone hitch hikes in that area because of poor bus service. It was Thursday night and they were simple going home for Shabbos. The car which stopped for them had Israeli plates (it was stolen) and an Israeli station was playing on the radio. There was no reason for them to suspect that there would be any problems

Moral Equivalence - the liberal disease
My neighbor was Eyal Yifrach, Z'L, HY"D . My greatest challenge in being Jewish and making Aliyah is the tragic blight of 'moral equivalence' promoted by fellow Jews and Israelis. We don't believe in our destiny, we scoff it. I don't fear Hezzbollah, but ourselves. This Elul is the time to correct our souls.

Anyone remember this?:
"But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the Land from before you, then those whom you leave over will be as spikes in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they will harass you in the land in which you settle." - Numbers (Bamidbar), Chapter 33, verse 55

We are in Galus
I have seen you post this before and there are many other verses, a substantial amount, that address exile, Moshiach and the in-gathering. There are also differing opinions and interpretations. So, posting just this one verse does not reflect that.
Natan, September 2, 2019 3:50 PM
Consequences
Yes, I am obviously siding with those (like Rashi) who indicate that the verse is simply stating consequence of non-compliance.
The fact is that approximately half of Jews reside in Israel. Demographic trends indicate it will soon be more than half.
With that fact on the ground the verse applies.
Rasi makes it very clear that if we're there, the consequence applies.
NECHAMA, September 3, 2019 7:40 AM
referring to specific nations
Hashem told the Jews to drive out the seven nations who populated the land when they arrived after the exodus from Egypt. The Torah repeatedly states that these nations had committed terrible sins (including child sacrifice, incest and the like) and Hashem waited till they were "worthy" of being driven out.
In any event, if this issue ever became feasible, top halachic authorities would have to be consulted before any action was taken.

REPREHENSIBLE.
There are among us, G_d alone knows, illiterate, ill-informed Jews whose own insensitivity becomes apparent in negative commentary in those multi-dimensional situations which require historical context and contemporaneous understanding; they jump onto the bandwagon - claiming insight - and destroy lives, beyond the fateful killing of three sons of Israel.
For shame. Smarmy and Unforgiveable.

Natan, September 2, 2019 6:22 AM
Useless
We will not turn the tide with protests, no matter how vociferous.
Some uncomfortable realities:
The thing that we need to wake up to is that they don't want your/our education.
They don't need your/our permission to hate us. Some of the most virulent enemies of our past have been very educated about us and experts in whatever other field they were in.
It has nothing to do with ignorance - accept that you/we will NOT educate them into accepting us.
The inverse is also true. Namely, we do NOT owe them an explanation. We need to do what we are charged with and make it clear we don't need their approval. When we explain, it only weakens us in their eyes (and in our own).
Visions of a long-lasting golden era for Jews in America are proving to be wrong before our very eyes.
Europe is obviously worse.
The best way to fight Jew hatred is to put our money where our mouths are (we say it every day in our Amidah prayer) - move to Israel. This is not Zionism - this is Judaism.
As usual, G-d is reminding us through our enemies what the basic facts are: The enemy doesn't separate Jew and Israel - neither should we...
Yoni, September 2, 2019 12:31 PM
I can think of a lot of good reasons for moving to Israel but safety is not one of them. Unfortunately, Jews are murdererd and hated in Israel by the local non Jewish population more than any other place in the world.
Natan, September 2, 2019 3:09 PM
I spoke of the changing tide
It's just a matter of time (and not much, if recent history is any hint) till Israel is the least dangerous place for Jews.
I am one of those crazies that believes that if we do what G-d told us and move to Israel (Ramban holds this a positive commandment throughout history - don't believe me - look it up), we'll be better off in the long run (maybe Ramban was crazy too? Maybe Ezra was crazy too?)
Yoni, September 2, 2019 7:00 PM
Ramban is one opinion. Tosfos is another opinion that disagrees with Ramban. Contemporary opinions (such as R. Moshe Feinstein) are of the opinion that while it’s a mitzva (good deed) to live in Israel, there is no obligation to move to Israel before the final redemption of Moshiach. So to present one opinion as doing what G-d told us to do is a bit disingenuous.
While I hope and pray for peace for Jews worldwide, unfortunately, Israel has been in a constant state of war since its inception and has had a major war about every 10 years, besides for the constant threat of lone wolf terrorists. I personally love Israel and hope to move back as soon as circumstances allow, but to present it as a safer place is in my opinion incorrect.

So sorry for your loss, but I disagree.
Firstly, please allow me to express my sincerest sympathy for your loss. Having watched the first four episodes shown so far, I do not agree that attention was not given to the tragic plight of the three Israeli boys. In the early episode there was massive prayer response and family interjection. In the fourth episode I was brought to tears when the grandmother of one of the Israeli assassin's breaks down upon the realization that the boys have been murdered. That just brought home the message of the significance of the horror of the initial terrorist attack and the ensued repercussions displayed by these unhinged Jews. I think people can and should watch this and draw their own conclusions.
(62) Esther Kandel, September 1, 2019 7:13 AM
Thank you Rabbi Blech for hitting the nail on the head. I was in Israel the entire summer of 2014 and there is no question that this show turn the facts on their heads. Even more so in a more nuanced way they take actual footage in the first episode from Rachel Fraenkels remarks and somehow managed to make her look like part of the whole crazy settler movement weaving it along with the raging masses in the second episode once they find out the three boys are dead and they all come together for a hate-filled rally. The signs all reading revenge and death to the Arabs. Riots galore, all Jewish, no signs of Arab rioting before the Palestinian boy was killed( in actuality, there were rioting Arabs almost daily during the search for the Jewish boys well before the Palestinian boy was kidnapped and killed. I remember well because I used the light rail in Jerusalem daily and it was often shut down or delayed because various riots and fire bombs at Shuafat train stop before we even knew those poor boys were dead). The creators of the show we're also particularly devious in that they have you believing that this must be the truth the surely as it is seen through the eyes of a shin bet Jewish division" investigator, initially skeptical others including token kippa wearing shabakniks who originally keep insisting that Jews could never do this. This entire show thus far is filled with unbelievable lies, distortions and nuances you'd have to look for which makes the whole thing so much more dangerous. All in all just shockingly appalling. And they haven't even shown the fifth episode yet. It's only going to get worse. People need to watch and make their voices heard to the appropriate contacts at HBO which are easily enough obtained.

Reviews are so vastly different
I have read many articles and viewpoints on this series, Haaretz writer says it is so sensitive and thoughtful it deserves to be shown to as large of an audience as possible. These events, the vicious murders of all 4 Our Boys led up to the War in Gaza. it is an important story to re-tell and depending on your experience opinions will differ. I remember the anguish I felt during that time and afterwards. People's differing views should be respected based on their experiences and lived reality. So, throwing around words about others' comments, that are inflammatory and incite creates more separation between Jews and pain and hurt for people. I have come to the conclusion, although we are One People, there are such vast differences between us based on political affiliation and level of observance, it is better to stay with ones own group.
How ironic that is the story of our exile to begin with, the fighting among us. Something to think about this Yom Kippur, because we have not come very far.

you are absolutely right with your analysis, we as jews do not really get a chance to grieve with the parents and friends and family of the three boys, also with entire nation of Israel, being part of a large family. many series that I have watched lately seem to have alternate agenda when producing series of this nature. Despicable Propaganda
I had been eagerly awaiting this HBO series, set in Jerusalem. However, by the end of the first episode my family and I were shocked by the manner in which the exemplary characters and lives of Eyal Yifrach ( who was 19, not 16 ), Naftali Fraenkel and Gilad Sha’ar, zechronam l’vracha, were glossed over. The minimalist treatment of their kidnapping and deaths were treated to no dramatization at all. Just the news footage and Bibi speaking at their funerals. We are given no personal connection whatsoever to the three Jewish boys do brutally murdered. Then the remaining episodes focus not at all on these fine young men, nor is there any further glimpse into their families and how they dealt with a loss of such magnitude. Instead the focus of the series is the young Arab victim, Mohammed, whom we get to know well in the lead up to his death. And we are lead to take a good close look at the Orthodox “settlers” who commit this murder for purposes of revenge. An appallingly anti-haredi, anti-Jewish film. Despicable propaganda. And a Chillul Hashem

No Moral Eqivalence
To even suggest that there is any kind of moral equivalence in this case, is not only absurd, but downright evil. Obviously the murder of that one Arab boy was reprehensible, but it was one single act, and it was immediately condemned by every Jew on the planet. Meanwhile, not even a single day goes by without the islamoNazis murdering or attempting to murder our Jewish people, and every murder of a Jew is accompanied by joy and celebration within the world of Allah, with streets named after the murderers, as if those murderers are heroes, and with the families of the murderers receiving financial reward for life. Of course, to an Intolerant Leftist, none of these inconvenient facts matter, for truth is their enemy.

Raymond - these are Torah Values of "Intolerant Leftists"
All of us, every single one, is created in the image of G-d. We all have a spark of HaShem within us. Taking an innocent life is akin to dedtroying the world. Welcoming the stranger, treating him with dignity.
As we enter the month of Elul, HaShem is so near, calling us to Return. We are One People, and were exiled over our in-fighting. Jewish values are Torah values.
Enough leftist bashing.

To Yoni
I go to Chabad House every week. You will find there Jews all across the political spectrum. Every Jew in the room is for Judaism, deepening their love and connection to Hashem, adding one Mitzvah to another, the love pours out into the space. Not everyone is a Zionist, there are Israelis, Amrricans, people from all different countries.
What unites us is Torah. And Judaism.
With regard to Trump, obviously we both will vote for a President we feel supports us, cares about us. For me, he is the worst President for Jews because he ignites snd incites and divides and the aggression toward Jews in my state hss increased tremendoulsly. To me, more Trump means more death of innocent lives like Poway and Pittsburgh, more vandalism and assault, more division, more hate. You feel the opposite, so will vote for him. BTW, Tlaib and Ilhan are 2 people, they are not the face of the Democratic party, that is a complete 100% lie. And another reason you couldn't pay me to vote for Trump. His white nationalist neo-nazi members, scare me. As for his and yours disloyal comment: Your srrogance and ignorance is expected.
Love your Neighbor as Yourself, Torah 101.

Well said
Well spoken Anonymous, being a non American and qualified to vote while living in a democratic, not threatened by havy weapons and a good working judicial system country i would never vote for this conman. He's what he says about the news, he's a fake. A big blown up balloon over selfindulged and incompetent to be a presidents clark let stand to sit in that chair, he's a danger to the American people in general and not at all supportive for the Jews where ever to be found, he's what he is an egocentric give it all to me I am person who even dares to say that he is the awaited one. Yuck. Greetings

The Irony of It All
How ironic that those who hate our President, preach love and tolerance, while practically in the same breath express unmitigated vitriol against the most pro-Israel President in American history. What is President Trump supposed to think, when no matter what a fantastically good friend he is to us Jews, the vast majority of American Jews continue to hate him? I am thinking that a full 80% of American Jews have completely lost their minds.
Yoni, September 2, 2019 9:30 PM
This phenomenon of Jews being an automatic democrat vote even where it’s to our detriment never ceases to amaze me. Why?????
Anonymous, September 3, 2019 3:47 AM
Not automatic
I can only really speak for myself, but it is not automatic. I have before and would vote for a Republican President again, but it will never be Trump. And, the sentiment is the same toward your side - I am utterly aghast at how Republican Jews can support him. I cannot understand it. BTW, I do personally know many Modern Orthodox who do not support him. And, in my Shul, it is Orthodox but not Modern, there are many who do not support him. So, I disagree with you about automatic, anything. Jews I know from traditional, frum to progressive are thoughtful, discerning. Trump is using Israel for politics, damaging bipartisan support, and he is creating an unsafe environment for Jews in diaspora. I could not vote for a President that as I see it, couldn't care less about us. He is No friend.

Did you even watch the show?
I'm pretty shocked that a rabbi would write such an inflammatory article without even watching the show. Maybe you heard about someone else's outrage and decided to write about it, without even reaching your own conclusions? The show does NOT take place after their deaths, it takes place after they have been kidnapped, and everyone watching is transfixed and horrified as the authorities try to track down the missing boys.
"Our Boys" did a FANTASTIC job at showing the mourning of Am Yisrael for the 3 boys, showing our achdus at the kotel, our weeping, how we feel for each other. The show does a service in not casting Eyal , Gilad, and Naftali. I have watched the show with my mother and sister and have been amazed at how accurate and heartfelt the show it. It ACTUALLY films in Har Nof, Lifta, etc!
Rabbi, maybe next time watch the show you are critiquing.
Anonymous, September 2, 2019 12:32 AM
To 55
Has it ever cross your mind that you and Rabbi Blech may have a different take on the show? Have you think for a moment the pain his family suffered losing a child on this cruel and senseless way? Just this past month I have learn about 2 teenagers, kill by arabs in separate crimes, nothing have changed.
I doubt - Rabbi will do this essay without watching it first.

IT SEEMS EVERY TRAGEDY IN ISRAEL IS ALWAYS PREJUDICIALLY SKEWED TO MAKE JEWISH PEOPLE SEEM LIKE THEY ARE THE TERRORISTS. IT WAS WRONG WHAT HAPPENED TO THE YOUNG PALESTINIAN TEEN BUT WHAT ABOUT THE 3 JEWISH BOYS? THEIR FAMILIES WERE DEVASTATED, AS I TOO WAS. WILL THERE EVER BE TRUTH REPORTED ABOUT JEWISH PEOPLE? THE PEOPLE WHO KILLED THE PALESTINIAN BOY WERE TRIED & PUNISHED. WHAT ABOUT THE PALESTINIANS WHO KILLED THE JEWISH BOYS? THEY GET OFF SCOTT FREE & GET REWARDED. NO TRUE JUSTICE FOR JEWS!

"Our Boys": HBO Series
I read about the story in The Jewish Week newspaper about this story. I was shocked and disgusted, that this was written by a Israeli person. This person must be a left leaning person, to make a Jewish Tragedy into propaganda to Condemn Israeli Society. This person should be arrested for being a traitor to his own people. He thinks he will get a medal from our enemies, but I hope he is their next target. What is wrong with Jews, that don't feel the pain, of their fellow Jews, but instead feel the pain of our enemies that want to kill us. This person is nuts in my view, if he so left leaning, that he condemns Israeli society. He should condemn our enemies society, we Jews are a nation that fellows the Torah, even secular people fellow our traditions. I am ashamed of a person , that twisted the real facts to make, it like Jews are no good, which is very far from the truth. Did he get paid from our enemy to make, such a propaganda film against Israeli society. What triggered such hatred against his fellow Jews, he must be a self hating Jew. I don't think anyone else will steep so low, to tell a bunch of lies, instead of the truth. I think someone else, should make another film, to tell the truth the Jewish side of the story. I hope he has a lot of trouble , the person that made such a awful, disgusting film. Why do the worst enemies, come from our people, this is a very sad fact. This film happened after the Holocaust, why didn't Jews learn a lesson already. I can't believe that a Jewish, person was so evil, to make a film, to make his fellow Jews look so bad. What is wrong with this person? Should people protest or something, against this horrible film. What possessed a person, to do evil to his own fellow Jews, I just don't get it. Now, someone should make a film how they kidnap, murder, and make terror acts against Jews. I am sick of one sided stories, even on Facebook ,there is a double standard, against Jews and other types of people

thats ridiculous! Gaza initiated with rocket attacks.
Gaza initiated with many rocket attacks prior to the kidnapping and during the subsequent search.
Anonymous, September 1, 2019 1:40 PM
Gaza paid
Indeed gaza paid for it, they fired over 14.000 (14K) rockets into Israel in about 15 days. They should be happy there were not that many casualties and the Gaza strip was not flattened only Hamas building and homes of hamas officials were targeted, oh yes and this unwra school and this mosque and this kindergarten all stockpiled with rockets, it was a big, bigger biggest firework not even the Israeli army could have foreseen.
Marsha, September 1, 2019 5:51 PM
Not enough
Gaza has not paid nearly enough for the anguish, death and destruction they have brought on Israel.

I am so disappointed at the distortion of this series. However, I'm not surprised. I can't understand how HBO could let this be aired. There's no stopping hatred.

Although I felt very disappointed with the first few episodes I was hoping that it would get better. I hoped they would return to what I had thought was the true story of three I three Israel boys. I don’t think I will watch the rest of the series

Repuplican group posted video
depicting Jews as a threat and dangerous to their neighborhood. Rockland. They fear a Take- Over. Reminds me of Charlottesville, chants against Jews.
So as for the lies about the Left, the Right is your greater problem.
Anonymous, September 1, 2019 5:09 AM
It’s the new fad
Unfortunately, Jew hatred has become fashionable and it’s coming both from the right and the left. The Hitler wannabes in Rockland County NU and Ocean County NJ are very different from the Hitler wannabes like Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar. They are united only in their hatred for Jews. This is a chilling and serious issue which people should be aware of.

honest reporting????
When I saw the poster ad for this series in a Manhattan subway station earlier this summer, I sensed right away, with a shiver, that it would be, tragically, precisely as you describe. Yet another instance of truth being sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.......and, yes, raw antisemitism expressed as anti Israel or pro Palestinian sentiment by bleeding heart liberals with no interest in facts.

best way to protest and defend
How would be the best way to defend this miscarriage of justice and this twisting of reality? Is there a contact at HBO or a place on the internet to refute this cinematic piece of anti-semitism. This is a legitimate question so if anyone knows the best way to refute this so that people don't get their "news" from this I would like to know and participate.
Natan, September 2, 2019 6:28 AM
The only real solution
(41) Anonymous, August 29, 2019 6:37 PM
A tragedy on top of tragedy
I wonder what Bill Maher says about this tragic series. After all he is HBOs darling. But why are we surprised? It just never ends!
The thing to do is for some producer to produce the true story. Just like the story of the Central Park attack was a bunch of lies that will be perpetuated without another producer rebutting the story, so will this story if not rebutted will be in perpetuity.
(40) David Kralstein, August 29, 2019 6:13 PM

It's the unfortunate truth of ALL recorded history. Totally biased condemnation of Jewish actions coupled with a distorted blind eye to anti-Jewish acts and statements.

Myth: "Jews control the entertainment industry."
So much for the world-wide myth that "Jews control the entertainment industry." I have not seen the series, 'Our Boys,' nor do I wish to. I would not know what to do with my anger at the unfair, biased treatment of Israel that Rabbi Blech describes. What else is new? By the way, having spent 19 years as a writer/producer of prime time network TV, I can tell you first hand, Jews do not control the entertainment industry. Witness HBO.
Caren May, August 30, 2019 12:48 PM
Who controls Hollywood & the sphere of entertainment
Media, Hollywood & its productions are directed, designed & written with a far left agenda. Watch the commercials of today that praise the breakdown of family life, disrespect between individuals & hate for our country.
Jews are still a strong majority of Hollywood players YET they are not proponents of a Judaic moral code & zero loyalty to a Jewish State.
Shabbat shalom & gd willing wishes for a better year ahead.

HBO needs to censured, but by whom, and where, so that this article doesn't stay within Am Israel...
(37) Steve, August 29, 2019 5:11 PM
Tragic distortion of a tragic event
Not only did the Jewish community mourn the loss of these 3 fine young men, but your Christian brothers, who live and breathe for the right of Israel to exist, wept and cried for the crimes committed and the lives taken.
When will the world awaken to the TRUTH that Israel loves life and their detractors and those that want to destroy them love death?
Christians of the present have repented and asked for forgiveness for our role in the past and hope we can contribute and defend the Jewish life, liberty and freedom to exist and worship and flourish! HBO be ashamed!
(36) Jim Wherry, August 29, 2019 4:57 PM
Thank you for your perspective.
As usual with Jewish introspection, the producers focused on Israel and not on the Jewish victims. Still, I’ve seen a few episodes and I thought it showed Israel’s determination to investigate the murder of the Palestinian youth and not to try and cover it up. The show also revealed efforts by Hamas to use this to cover its own crimes and instead to use it to stoke the flames of violence. The parents of the three Jewish children were made out to be hippy radicals, though.

suggestions for more HBO series
Next, HBO might want to do some series about Palestinians:
1. Celebrating after 9/11
2. Naming schools, public squares, summer camps, athletic fields etc. after people who bomb civilian buses killing men, women and children
3. Slitting the throats of infants in their cribs
4. Calling for death to all Jews everywhere in the world
see: www.palwatch.org ; www.memri.org
for more details than you ever want to, but unfortunately should, know

Worse Yet
And shooting their own children when the IDF refuses to. Eyewitness.
(34) Sandy Lebowitz, August 29, 2019 4:33 PM
On the mark
Finally. Someone is telling the true story of this disgusting attack on all Israelis, and settlers in particular. The trailer was my first hint of what was to come, and Rabbi Blech has hit the proverbial nail on its ugly head. The Jews will always be the bad guys, even in fairy tales created by Jews. The murder of Mohammed was sick, and the perpetrators punished. Their families will not receive payments for life. The Jewish families are left to mourn with all of the Nation of Israel. We know what happened.

The Story Briefly Covered the Search
I watched the first episode of Our Boys and was disgusted with what HBO decided to emphasize in the series. They did briefly cover the boys abduction and all the Tehillim at the Kotel while the boys were being searched for. But, after the boys were found murdered, I don’t recall any mass demonstrations happening on Yafo Street where people were yelling Kill the Arabs. So, I agree. Our Boys intention seems to be trying to Hit Israeli Society in a very dishonest way. I never watched another episode.
Anonymous, August 29, 2019 7:54 PM
They were correct
in saying hundreds shouted "death to arabs." This is true, there is no debate. There was tremendous incitement and the murder of the Arab was gruesome, he wss burned alive.
He was a child of G-d also. It is painful to see how HBO has portrayed the events, however there is Jewish terrorism and the Hilltop orthodox youth are labelled as such. It hurts at the depth of my Soul to see this of other Jews. There is no place for it and Arab parents, when their innocent loved ones are murdered have the right for their voices to also be heard.
It is beyond heartbreaking the pain and loss that has taken place, the hatred must stop.
(30) Anonymous, August 29, 2019 3:10 PM
Is there any recourse?
I have not seen the HBO series but surely those responsible for providing one side of the story should be taken to task and the whole truth should be told instead of one skewed to incite hatred of Israel.
Rachel, September 1, 2019 2:23 AM
It’s a dramatization, not a documentary
The series is not meant to tell “the whole truth”. It ihas merit as art.

Another version then, should be made.
I first read about this on Ynet, so I was aware the perspective was not flattering to Israel. But, is is not propaganda, either.
https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5569736,00.html
There have been other terrorist acts (Jewish media in Israel calls them that) revenge/payback, called price tag attacks that are on the rise from the Hilltop Youth, Jewish orthodox settlers. There is a hearbreaking, despicable (meaning their conduct is) video showing chanting "burn baby burn" from orthodox boys over a Palestinian child going to court -the only remaining survivor after his family's home was burned down. Also a Palestinian woman was killed by a boulder thrown at her car in front of her children.
There is legitimate suffering and pain on that side and this series is depicting the pain from that point of view. It is their lived experience. That does not make it antisemitic.
The response is to make your own version. Then the Israeli lived experience can also be shown.
I cried and Davened my heart out over the 3 Israeli boys, my nephew was in Yeshiva at the time in Israel. And I also cried over the horrendous killing of the Palestinian, they burned the body.
The Hilltop youth payback attacks are a stain on the Soul of the Jewish people, a disgrace.
(27) Howard Floch, August 29, 2019 2:52 PM
anti Semitic garbage pure and simple
I thought HBO was above altering history for discriminatory purposes, but I guess not. Anti Semitism pure and simple.
(26) Sharlene Harrison-Hinds, August 29, 2019 2:40 PM
your slant is not mine
I beg to differ on your interpretation of the series. First and foremost I'd like to say that my takeaway on the title is that 'Our Boys' is a collective thought that unifies, meaning the 'Our' refers to both sides and thereby unifies. Both sides experienced tragedy and loss. Secondly, I believe the painstaking diligence of the investigation speaks volumes for the dedication to justice of Israel. As it happens, I was in Israel when the three boys were kidnapped and and clearly remember the almost instantaneous roadblocks and a nation on high alert. Had the authorities not been so thorough the final chapter would have been different. In the end, regardless of our political views, we are all people and the 'Boys' are part of all of us. I will hold off on my final opinion and thoughts until I have watched the entire series. For now we must agree to disagree.

I agree totally. Although in terms of filmmaking the show is gripping but it’s not the show I expected to see. I wanted to learn more about our three boys and their families. One of which Gillad Shaer is the nephew of a very close friend of mine. His family is rich in story as I’d heard are the others. So I thought there would be more delving deeply into their backgrounds. I thought they would show more of them before the horrific murder of three young innocent beautiful souls. More of their families before and after. Everyone in israel was swept up on what happened and felt connected to them like family so o wondered why the makers of this show didn’t think that was rich enough material to work with. And the utter shock when our citizens committed the murder was not quiet shown and it was in reality extremely and widely condemned bcz it’s not something that has precedent in jewish culture as opposed to their celebrating of killing innocent people with candy and dancing in the streets. It’s a shame because in terms of filmmaking this show is gripping but pretty far from the realities and a missed opportunity to delve deeply where the title insinuates. Like false advertising but with a brilliant cast.

Was going to watch but now NO.

excellent article that begs the question.....
.....with so much material to draw from to make movies showing Israel's side of so many stories, why are there so few movies made about it? A great example is the new movie "Red Sea Diving Resort" about rescuing persecuted Ethiopians.
There are religious Israeli movie-makers. Where are there powerful movies?

(7) Raymond, August 28, 2019 8:52 PM
Leftist Antisemitism
Once again the Leftist-dominated mainstream media has found still another excuse to express their antisemitism. This is why I became a political conservative so many decades ago, because I realized how pro-Israel the political conservatives are, in contrast to the Leftist war against traditional Jewish values.
I had no idea that one of those three victims was a cousin of Rabbi Blech. I am so sorry for his loss. I actually met the boy's mother when she came to speak here in Los Angeles a few years ago. The woman is the living embodiment of a tzadeket, although she would be the first one to deny that. When I spoke to her, it felt as if I were in the presence of true spiritual greatness.
(6) Rachel, August 28, 2019 5:30 PM
Are you watching the same show as I am?
The first episode is all about the kidnapped Israelis and the national response. Only subsequently do we learn about the Arab Israeli teenager and the group of disaffected yeshiva boys. To me, they are all “our boys”, and that is the tragedy. At the center of the story are an Israeli police commander and the Arab father of the murdered teen. Both men are decent people trying to do what is right in a horrible situation. Since the series was made in Israel, blasting “Hollywood” is nonsensical. Israel has a robust independent film industry.
Joshua, August 29, 2019 2:08 PM
thank you
Rachel - I don't have HBO and I just wanted to say how important I find your comment - because in today's world of knee-jerk online condemnation from afar, there are fewer people who investigate before forming an opinion. I don't plan to ever watch this series, but your interpretation is valuable and provides a different perspective from context (i.e. "Our Boys" meaning perhaps all of the boys who were tragically destroyed in this series of incidents). I'm what you'd call "right wing" I suppose - I'm Orthodox, I live in the United States and I'm a staunch Constitutionalist. It would be easy to react to this article without thinking. Instead, I just feel all around sad. We're all made in the image of G-d and I believe all parents love their children. There are truly millions of victims and no winners in this situation. Even perhaps the film makers, if they're trying to present a fair narrative and are misunderstood. Regardless - the article and all of the comments including yours deepen my feelings that IY"H will come through in my davening as we head into Elul and prepare for Yom HaDin. Thank you for that.

I first heard the term ' Fundamentalist as a person who held onto a basic belief
or an original act that underpinned their core system thus effecting their way of life. But as i have aged AND watched the world transform from somewhere you could smile, to a place where the truth is a lot less as important as it was.
We live in a time now where the 'Overview' the general consensus of opinion is best for us .My thought today is -: Will there be any body left to dry our tears ?

Food for the BDS Crowd
The tragedy here is that Hollywood has funded the BDS narrative. This story was easily flipped on its head to tell the desired narrative. The viewers were poisoned during their college experience. BDS is a very strong influence on most colleges especially the ones that promote creative expression. The producers enter their careers believing that BDS and its corollaries are what the viewers want.

A one-sided “story” again discrediting Israeli society. Shame on the producers for being less than truthful.
Another untold tragedy.

I was wondering why I did not see any clips of the boys
I will probably watch this series until the end. However, I found it to be muddled. I recall seeing one clip of Rachel Frankel, but I believe that was all. Thank you for providing me with that articulate review. At this point I am watching the show to sharpen my Hebrew conversational skills for an upcoming trip to Israel. (My very first! I had to get that last sentence in there.) Rabbi--It must have been very painful for you to watch the mini series. Kol tuv.
