A recent joke on the popular show Saturday Night Live (SNL) has tapped into anti-Jewish stereotypes, and echoes statements that are increasingly being made in the news.
The slur is that Israel, the world’s leader in vaccinating its population, is somehow only offering medical care to Jews. “Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population,” deadpanned Michael Che, “and I’m gonna guess it’s the Jewish half.”
The studio audience chuckles and Che moves on. It was only a brief joke, but in that moment countless viewers around the world absorbed the canard that Israel is denying lifesaving aid to its non-Jewish citizens. Worse still is the snide tone of Che’s joke, as if it’s apparently obvious that Israelis are racist and only care about themselves, even to the point of putting others in danger.
In the past several weeks, Israel has become the world’s leader in administering vaccines. By the time that Che made his joke, over 4.3 million Israelis – out of a population of approximately 9 million – had received their first of two vaccine doses, and nearly 3 million had received their second. It’s a huge achievement, and it’s most certainly not limited to Jewish residents of Israel. Yet Israel has found itself battling unfair allegations that it’s limiting access to vaccines to Jews only.
Accusing Israel
In January, Amnesty International said that Israel’s rollout of vaccines to Israeli citizens highlights the country’s “institutionalized discrimination” against Palestinians. In a January 26 speech to the United Nations, Palestinian Authority (PA) Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki accused Israel of “not provid(ing) any vaccine to the Palestinian people under occupation to this day, denying its obligation to do so.” Left unnoted in the speech was the fact that the Palestinian Authority had not asked Israel to help supply vaccines in PA-administered areas. In fact, the reality of Israel’s – and of the PA’s vaccine programs – is much more complex than many seem to realize.
Israel’s Covid-19 vaccination program began on December 19, 2020, and is already one of the world’s most extensive, delivering vaccines to a larger share of its population than virtually any other country. Early on in the race to develop a Covid-19 vaccine, Israel struck a deal with Pfizer-BioNTech. Paying what NPR calls “a premium” for the drugs, Israel secured an early supply of the company’s vaccine doses, and “struck a unique deal: vaccines for data”.
As America’s National Public Radio (NPR) notes: “The nation of some 9 million promised Pfizer a swift vaccine rollout, along with data from Israel's centralized trove of medical statistics to study ‘whether herd immunity is achieved after reaching a certain percentage of vaccination coverage in Israel,’ according to their agreement.”
"We said to Pfizer ... that the moment they give us the vaccine, we'll be able to vaccinate at the speed they've never heard of," explained Yuli Edelstein, Israel's Minister of Health, to NPR.
“Israel's small size and technologically advanced public health system offer an attractive model for Pfizer to demonstrate the impact of the vaccine on an entire population. Pfizer has not signed a similar agreement with any other country, company spokesperson Jerica Pitts says.”
Vaccinating Jews and Arabs
Israel’s vaccine campaign has seen immunization sites set up in Jewish and Arab neighborhoods. Vaccine hesitancy has been greater among Israeli Arabs than Jews, and Israeli health officials have stepped up efforts to encourage Arab Israelis to receive the shots.
Coincidentally, the millionth Israeli to be vaccinated was 66-year-old Arab-Israeli citizen Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab, at a vaccination center in the Arab Israeli town of Umm al-Fahm. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was on hand to celebrate the moment. He later visited other Arab towns to encourage Israeli Arabs to come be vaccinated.
Later on, some people criticized Netanyahu for posing with al-Wahhab when it emerged that al-Wahhab had previously spent 14 years in jail for what the Times of Israel called “robbery and weapons charges.” But the fact that the millionth Israeli to receive a Covid-19 vaccine happened to be an Arab-Israeli and an ex-con showed Israel’s determination to distribute vaccines to all, without fear or favor.
In addition to offering vaccines to all its citizens, Israel has also offered vaccines to Arab residents of Jerusalem. As residents of Israel’s capital, these people are eligible for Israeli citizenship, though some have declined to become Israeli citizens.
West Bank and Gaza
The Times of Israel notes that “Critics of Israel’s vaccination policy point to the Fourth Geneva Convention, which states that an occupying power is required to provide vaccines to the inhabitants of the territories under its control.”
However, when it comes to the West Bank – which is ruled by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and to Gaza – which is ruled by Hamas – it’s local Palestinian politicians who long ago agreed to supervise health policy within these areas. The 1995 Oslo Accords “stipulate that the Palestinian Authority is responsible for Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza, while both sides are to work together to combat epidemics,” the Times of Israel reports.
Saturday Night Live isn’t the only outlet to misunderstand Israel’s complicated relationship with the Palestinian Authority. After erroneously blaming Israel for not including Arabs living in PA-governed regions in its vaccine program, the BBC issued this clarification: Although there is a wider dispute over the issue, the (Oslo) Accords – which Israel signed with the Palestine Liberation Organization – give the Palestinian Authority oversight of public health under the principles of self-determination.
Palestinian Authority’s Vaccine Rollout
The Palestinian Authority has negotiated its own vaccination deals. According to the New York Times, “The Palestinians received 10,000 doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine on Thursday (January 28, 2021). They expect to receive 37,440 Pfizer doses in February and hundreds of thousands of AstraZeneca doses in either late February or early March through the global-sharing initiative Covax… An additional two million doses of AstraZeneca are slated to arrive throughout March, Palestinian officials said.”
Some of the PA’s earliest vaccine doses were donated by Israel, which – according to the New York Times – had given thousands of doses to the PA by early February. The newspaper quoted Ghassan Khatib, a political scientist at Birzeit University, who argued that Palestinians in PA-controlled areas were loath to use Israeli-provided vaccines “because they were loath to sound ‘self-contradictory,’ seeking to obtain them independently while simultaneously ceding responsibility to Israel.
Even Al Jazeera, a news outlet that’s not often a fan of the Jewish state, recently reported that although “Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has struggled to secure vaccines for his people. So far, he has received 2,000 doses from Israel to inoculate medial workers in the West Bank, and 10,000 doses from Russia.
In recent days, according to The Times of Israel, “Israel has transferred several thousand doses to Ramallah (the seat of power for the PA) for the Palestinian Authority to vaccinate medical staff, and on Friday (February 19, 2021), the PA announced that Israel had agreed to vaccinate 100,000 Palestinians who are employed in Israel.
At the same time, there have been holdups of Russian-donated vaccines to Gaza: Israel maintains a blockade in order to prevent weapons being smuggled into Gaza and falling into the hands of Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza. This has slowed down the movement of the vaccines into Gaza.
Tapping into anti-Jewish Stereotypes
In the aftermath of the SNL joke, some Jews have called on the show to apologize. “Saturday Night Live’s ‘joke’ isn’t just untrue – it’s dangerous, a modern twist on a classic anti-Semitic trope that has inspired the mass murder of countless Jews throughout the centuries,” reads a petition circulated by the American Jewish Committee.
Israel’s Consul General in New York, Israel Nitzan, tweeted about SNL: “Spreading anti-Semitic Lies & misinformation is already a problem. Fanning the flames just to get a laugh is not only wrong, it’s irresponsible. Israel has made the vaccine available for its entire population equitably, regardless of gender, race or religion.”
Saturday Night Live should apologize immediately for its unfunny, untrue, and damaging “joke”.

What about the show's producer?
I would like to know what Lorne Michaels has to say about this. It is his show and he sets the standards. The show use to be funny, but it became too political and down right cynical. My generation has stopped watching it.

How can we join this petition or make our voice heard on this issue? Does SNL have a complaint box or contact information in this regard?

DISGRACE!
Anti-Jewish/Anti-Semitic comments on a national news station like NBC are a DISGRACE! You should apologize to Israel and the Jewish people!
(45) Kathleen York, February 26, 2021 12:40 PM
SNL should apologize
I am a Christian but have always considered the Jewish people as our elder brothers( and sisters) in the Lord. It is despicable of SNL to make such a joke. Sad that our country is now so emboldened to pick and choose who they will denigrate with impunity and even sadder that they pick on a nation and it’s people who from its beginning has suffered such terrible persecution.

Rabbi Burg on Antisemitism
Rabbi Burg was on Newsmax TV last night speaking about how antisemitism is coming from left wing groups. It would be great to post the interview on the Aish website. The majority of American Jews are not observant and believe that antisemitism comes only from the right.

No surprise
Israel is giving the Arabs a chance to put their best and brightest on the forefront of developing something useful, instead of terror. No country is responsible for vaccinating a neighboring enemy population.
(42) Sara Holt, February 26, 2021 1:41 AM
Damn right SNL needs to apologize on the show itself
SNL disgusts me now. Where is the understanding and intelligence and empathy? This is humour? Let’s bring back the cracking of nigger jokes in that case. Same level of erudition, empathy, and historic heartlessness.
(41) Cheryl Len, February 25, 2021 9:53 PM
The writer and the comedian of this "joke" should be fired.
I remember a few years back when one of the lead actors on "Grey's Anatomy" was fired for making an anti-gay statement on the set. Whether that was right or wrong, this is a much more severe and damaging circumstance. It's provoking a rise in anti-semitism and/or anti-semitic activity. It legitimizes hate crimes. Just imagine if a joke were made about an African country making the vaccine available only to its black citizens who were Muslim, but no others - black, white, Asian, etc. would be given the vaccine!
An apology from SNL is not enough. The writer and the comedian should be fired.

History teaches that all faith should be respected
If history teaches us anything, it teaches us that we should come to the defense anytime a faith is mocked or made fun of. There are a multitude of examples where over the centuries, there were Christians who put there lives and risk and died defending or protecting those of the Jewish faith. Unfortunately, when Christians are mocked or made fun of or are persecuted, there is a deafening silence. For those who wish or act toward the extermination of Christianity, they should remember that quite possibly they are next. Who will be left to come to their aid then?

SNL anti Israel joke
Colin Jost, cohost of the news segment, is married to Scarlett Johansson, who is Jewish. Lorne Michael and several cast members are also Jewish. I'm surprised that none of them have made a statement regarding the erroneous joke. I believe the circumstances aren't well enough known.

Jews have only themselves to blame
Those liberal court Jews who support the celebrities and are fearful of their shadows will rue their cowardice and pig ignorant stupidity. We are supposed to be one nation. United we stand or divided we fall. Jewhate is rapidly gaining acceptance as the norm Many years ago I warned that the influx of ignorant and educated Muslims will grow in number and in doing so their open hate for the Jew will only reopen the genie bottle of blame the Jooooos among the nations a s a whole Shame upon this who remain quiet. Remember Churchill. Those who appease will pay for their mistakes and even In the Great Satan it is happening before you

You can't have it both ways and hide behind victimhood.
The West Bank is occupied territory and not under control of the Palestinian
Authority. Every day thousands of Palestinian workers cross the border. Some stay for a week or more, supporting the Israeli economy. Israel is dependent on workers from the territories where Jews settled. Israel is responsible to supply vaccines to workers, may they be migrants, fugitives, prisoners, foreign workers or are our neighbors, for instance in Hebron. The government has been recalcitrant, tardy and stingy. Not to vaccinate is not only inhumane but plain stupid. The joke was not tapping into stereotypes but in the new real duality of Israel as a "Nation State". We should stop using (abusing) the Holocaust to make excuses for inexcusable policies.
Selma Adler.
Natan, February 24, 2021 1:08 PM
Ya know, you're partially correct
The weak Israeli government shouldn't be giving ANY aid of any sort to the openly self declared enemies embodied in the PA and Hamas.
As enemies, they need to be forcibly expelled - as Torah law requires us to do.
Letting them work for us is sheer insanity.
To be kind to the enemy is to be cruel to those whom we, as a society, are charged to protect.
Alan S., February 24, 2021 5:58 PM
Yes and No
Put aside 'humanitarian' concerns for the moment.
No, I don't think anyone is using the Holocaust as an excuse for policies anywhere in Israel. Security concerns trump all issues. I do think remembrance of the Holocaust has a place here.
I don't think the joke crossed a line into anti-Semitism.
I for one do not think that everything said or written critically about Israel should cause us to answer: Holocaust! Nor is my skin so thin that I cannot take a funny joke about Israel or Israelis. Not everything should automatically cause our hackles to rise.
The joke was absolutely in poor taste.
The Oslo accords give the 3 areas of the West Bank, Areas A, B, and C, limited autonomy and self-rule to the Palestinians; this does not apply to Gaza.
In all 3 areas, the Palestinians maintain civil control, including on issues of health. Yes, it is true that Israel has final authority due to security issues.
Yes, Israel could help, if it wanted to, the Palestinians and or the PA inso far
receiving the vaccines.
My humanitarian side becomes chafed, however, when I realize that Israel is living with and next to a people that only wants its destruction. Sure, many Israeli Arabs and non-Israeli Arabs and Palestinians do want to live in peace within and next to Israel.

Free speech goes many ways including a mild anti Semitic joke. Ben Shapiro no doubt made a hypocritical complaints about this Saturday Night Live joke. France arrested a man for a satire mocking Charlie Hebdo the man was released very soon after because of the absurdity of the matter.
Nancy, February 24, 2021 8:40 AM
There's a big difference between "free speech" and perpetuating a blood libel.
Anonymous, February 24, 2021 9:49 PM
"Free speech" doesn't mean someone is beyond criticism, nor does it mean that a person cannot be fired for saying something offensive AS PART OF THE JOB! Michael Che should be fired for his job performance, which includes his offensive "jokes".
(25) Anonymous, February 24, 2021 3:53 AM
Why is it always acceptable?
Michael Che has made many racist and anti-Semitic comments, and continues to get away with it. People on TV can make anti white and anti-Semitic comments, and they are considered funny. If a Jew says anything that hints at racism, their careers are over. Blacks do not stand up for Jews ever, but Jews have always stood up for Blacks. It is not okay to disparage Jews and get away with it. He needs to be held accountable.
Anonymous, February 25, 2021 7:06 AM
What you are saying is racist. I know many Black people who do stand up for Jews. Michael Che isn't anti-Semitic because he's black, he's anti-Semitic because he's a bigot.
Anonymous, February 25, 2021 6:31 PM
I am not racist
I was discussing Michael Che's comments that are usually racist or antisemitic. You can add to that list Ice T, Nick Cannon, and several athletes. It just so happens they are black. I don't need a lesson on racism or antisemitism, but perhaps you do.

New Threshold, like part of a campaign
An Anti-Semitic joke told on SNL/NBC crosses a new threshold in terms of distribution and attempted normalization. It was done in a way that threatens those who rebuke them with being termed racists, when that is not the issue. The technique is to make racism the issue if possible. to submerge the anti-Semitism and induce guilt in those who might see and not like the anti-Semitic content of the "joke". A comedian has a staff and at least theoretical oversight. So, Che did not do it alone.
(17) Larry Furman, February 23, 2021 9:38 PM
SNL’s “Cold Open” slammed Gina Carano for trivializing the Holocaust
SNL has always been edgy on race. It may have begun with Eddie Murphy, during a “Christmas Episode,” saying, “And to my writers, Happy Chanukah.” During her tenure on the show, Leslie Jones made a ton of black-white jokes, often involving (white) Colin Jost and suggestions of sex. Michael Che often makes jokes in which he accuses his “Weekend Update” “co-anchor” Colin Jost of being a racist. In the same episode SNL stated that NY Gov. Cuomo looks like characters in a Mafia movie, a racist slur against Cuomo and Italians generally. But most importantly, in this episode’s Cold Open, SNL slammed actor Gina Carano, fired from the “Mandalorians,” for trivializing the Holocaust, which I am sure her fans found offensive. So maybe that’s balance on SNL. One bad joke that many on one side find offensive followed by another bad joke that many others find offensive. As I said, SNL’s humor is edgy. By that I mean it crosses the lines between funny and offensive in order to make people think. I guess next week, Mr. Che might say, “in last week’s episode I made a joke that offended many of the ‘People of the Book.’ They were so offended that they want to throw the book at me.”
(16) Perel Sherman, February 23, 2021 8:41 PM

What about all the countries - with non-Jewish populations - that have been helped by Israel's Emergency Aid Organization? SNL needs to apologize
First of all, SNL lied.
Because Israel is vaccinating all Arabs as well. Second, the Palestinian Authority, under Oslo Accords, administers health care themselves. The Palestinians did not want the Israeli vaccines, so they obtained Russian vaccines instead.
Second, their lie was anti-Semitic and not funny. They need to apologize immediately. Their content was hateful and bigoted.

A modern day Shylock
A comment on the above Saturday Night Live remark directed at Jews,
He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million ,laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew. The Jew , the eternal ubiquitous enemy of the world. William Shakespeare recognized this hatred hundreds of years ago, without(probably) ever seeing a Jew. The hatred of the Jew, in the modern sense commenced with the fiend Haman, in the book of Esther. Continued with some of the leaders of Rome, gathered further momentum during the Medieval Inquisition. By the modern era the ideas of Martin Luther, Wilhelm Marr, and countless dozens of others contributed to the further dehumanization of the Jewish people. The
forerunners of the Nazi Holocaust came from many European lands. Whom among the European and American intellectual would arise and cry out, Jewish lives matter. I do not expect this short note to make even a ripple in the
great waves from many sources of hatred directed at the Jew in today's world.
One of my many thousands of pupils inquired of me many years ago as to
the reason the Jew is called by God, his chosen people. My answer was short and brief, but to the point. To prove to the world that the murder of millions
during WW II,would hardly made a ripple in the ever increasing hatred of
the Jews, even in the post-war period.. As the prophet Yesha'ayahu states in chapter
five verse twenty of his book, Woe unto those who call bad good and good bad, bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
How long will it be for the Jew to board a train in the mid-west of our country and make the final ride into the interiors of one of our most northern states, never to return.
Best to you,
Professor Richard Tomback

The PA and Hamas demand to be treated as "states" - ie, as legitimate government bodies - yet consistently refuse to accept the responsibility of such. Apologies are useless.
I m tired of us Jews saying “apologize apologize” after every antiSemitic comment. How about punishing those who make antiSemitic comments!! People who make racist comments are swiftly punished. Retribution is more effective than “apologize apologize”. Calls to “apologize” only reinforce the stereotype of Jews as weak

I agree: why is Cancel culture only for anti-Black racism?
I agree: why is Cancel culture only for anti-Black racism?
Why isn't anyone cancelled for anti-Jewish racism? For example, Nick Cannon.

Anti-Semitism and Black Lives Matter
The incessant low and high level anti Jewish remarks by people of many races, cultures and levels in society contrasts greatly with similar remarks that would not be tolerated if made against Black people. It seems that Jews have always been an easy target for racists of all colours and such racists are rarely corrected when it is Jews that they discredit and attack. One has to ask why this is so.

We're not supposed to be among the nations to begin with
Unless you believe in Torah the following will make zero sense to you:
As long as we're in exile (as a nation), deep down we know we're in a position of weakness.
By definition, if we're in exile we are spiritually deficient, making us vulnerable - thus a lack of confidence.
Individual Jews in Israel (not the government) today are generally a LOT more intolerant of being abused in any form than their counterparts in the exile - simply because at least they are part of the process leading to the end of the exile - even if there by no conscious choice of their own (like growing up there).
Yes, just living in Israel alone is a great spiritual merit (as the Talmud clearly states), thus subconsciously bolstering the confidence of the Jew.

Love that
That’s great! Thank you. I do enjoy learning or being reminded of Torah. Made my day.

Huh?
The weak Israeli government shouldn't be giving ANY aid of any sort to the openly self declared enemies embodied in the PA and Hamas.
To be kind to the enemy is to be cruel to those whom we, as a society, are charged to protect.

In general, I agree with you. But...
I will differentiate between the leaders and the people. I hope all Jews will use their heart and their mind. Our heart to protect the vulnerable, and our mind to know who our enemies are.

Too late. They offered and were turned down!
