Sitting among more than 20,000 of his cheering, smiling fellow Americans, Isadore Greenbaum felt profoundly alone. Inside Madison Square Garden, a huge 30-foot picture of George Washington adorned the stage, flanked by American flags and swastikas. Washington was America’s “first Fascist’ according to the Feb. 20, 1939 rally organizers, the German American Bund, a nationwide cultural organization that promoted German-American culture and fealty to Hitler’s regime.
Surrounded by cheering Nazi sympathizers, Isadore sat through three hours of speeches and rapturous applause, getting angrier and angrier as speakers described a frightening Nazi vision of America, espousing white Christian dominance.
A huge portrait of George Washington at the German American Bund's "Pro American Rally" at Madison Square Garden.
“American patriots,” intoned Bund leader Fritz Kuhn, a naturalized American citizen who’d previously worked for a Ford factory in Detroit, “you have all heard of me through the Jewish controlled press as a creature with horns, a cloven hoof, and a long tail.” The rally kicked off with the National Anthem, sung by Americans wearing swastikas and giving Nazi salutes.
Speakers denounced “job-taking Jewish refugees.” A Bund official explained that “(t)he Spirit which opened the West and built our country is the spirit of the militant white man,” and claimed Nazism was a quintessentially American outlook. Kuhn reassured the rally goers, “It has then always been very much American to protect the Aryan character of this nation” and urged Americans to reclaim America and “demand that our government be returned to the people who founded it!”
Photo from Life Magazine, March 7, 1938
The rally-goers waved American flags and posters with slogans that included “Stop Jewish Domination of Christian America”. Many wore Nazi armbands. Security guards wearing uniforms very similar to the Brownshirts in Germany patrolled the aisles.
Outside Madison Square Garden, thousands of protestors gathered, denouncing the Nazi sympathizers inside. The crowd at the "Pro American Rally" also included housewives and ordinary citizens who were disgusted by Nazi supporters in their midst. At one point a band playing in a nearby Broadway theater serenaded the protestors with a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. One unnamed protestor set up a loudspeaker in a nearby building which broadcast anti-Nazi sentiments, as well as the advice to people attending the rally: “Be American, Stay Home.” Other protesters clashed with police; thirteen protestors were arrested during the evening.
New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia had been lobbied to prevent the rally from taking place, but he defended the Bund’s right to free speech. “If we are for free speech, we have to be for free speech for everybody, and that includes Nazis,” he explained. Seeking to avert violence, he instructed the New York City police to have a heavy presence in the area. 1,700 police officers were deployed around Madison Square Garden – “enough to stop a revolution” the police commissioner told reporters at the time.
New York's mounted police form a solid line outside Madison Square Garden on Feb. 20, 1939, to hold in a crowd where the fascist German American Bund was holding a rally.
It was virtually impossible to pass the police ranks and enter the rally without a ticket. Yet Isadore Greenbaum, a Jewish 26-year-old plumber's assistant who lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with his wife Gertrude and their young son, managed to do it. He sneaked inside the rally and sat in the back, listening with growing alarm at the hate-filled speakers. He was shocked at how eagerly the crowd received anti-Jewish messages and embraced a vision of America built on xenophobia and hatred.
As the rally wound down, Fritz Kuhn took the stage once again, and Isadore got out of his seat and slowly walked to the front of the stadium. He pushed through the Nazi-uniformed guards and jumped up on the stage. Quickly pulling out the cables from Kuhn’s microphone so the crowd could no longer hear the Bund leader, Isadore shouted the message he wanted to convey to over 20,000 of his fellow Americans instead: “Down with Hitler!”
Isadore Greenbaum being rushed off stage.
Bund guards immediately jumped on Isadore, punching and kicking him. He sustained a black eye and a broken nose. As the guards beat him, while the rally-goers screamed their approval, roaring with the delight at this public beating of a Jew. Eventually New York City police officers managed to intervene and pull Isadore to safety – once they were outside the police promptly arrested Isadore for disturbing the peace.
Isadore was brought before a judge and explained what happened: “I went down to the Garden without any intention of interrupting, but being that they talked so much against my religion and there was so much persecution I lost my head and I felt it was my duty to talk.”
The judge seemed to blame Isadore for the violence that had been directed against him. “Don’t you realize the innocent people might have been killed,” because of Isadore’s outburst he asked. “Do you realize that plenty of Jewish people might be killed with their persecution up there?” Isadore retorted.
Seemingly unmoved, the judge gave Isadore a choice: either spend ten days in jail or pay a $25 fine. Gertrude managed to scrape together the money for the fine, a large amount in 1939. None of the security guards or other people attending the rally faced any charges for beating Isadore or openly praising Nazi Germany or preaching hate.
Isadore Greenbaum and his family
A few months later, Fritz Kuhn was found guilty of embezzlement and tax evasion and was sent to Sing Sing Prison in New York. In 1941, when the United States entered World War II, Isadore Greenbaum enlisted in the US Navy, becoming a Chief Petty Officer. He was interviewed by the US Armed Forces’ newspaper Stars and Stripes about his experiences in Madison Square Garden. It was one of the very first instances of an American fighting uniformed Nazis, just months before war broke out. “Gee, what would you have done if you were in my place listening to that (expletive) hollering against the government and publicly kissing Hitler’s behind – while thousands cheered?” Isadore told the reporter before explaining, “Well, I did it.”
After his military service, Isadore and Gertrude moved to Los Angeles where Isadore became a colorful local figure, working as a fisherman and an artist on Newport Pier. He died in 1997, one of the first Americans to directly confront Nazi terror and to risk his life to oppose the dark vision that American Nazi sympathizers were promoting for his country.
Watch this 7-min documentary, A Night at the Gardens, by Marshall Curry, that captures the rally.

Was Trump's father a Nazi sympathizer?
Fred Trump, the father of Donald Trump, was arrested in 1927 as one of the white-hooded leaders of the KKK which rioted in Queens, New York. Considering that the KKK was and is one of the foremost anti-Semitic organizations in the US, it would not be surprising if Fred Trump supported the Nazi movement and had been at that rally of 20,000 in Madison Square Garden.

All I know Ed is that when I get to 'Heaven' I will look up Isadore to shake his hand!

What an amazing guy...Thank you.

David and Goliath
G-d Bless the late great Isadore Greenbaum .
David verses Goliath comes to my mind.
My 94 year old father from the Bronx , of New York told us that one evening a tremendous group of white Nazi lovers showed up at the high rise apartments where he lived.
These Nazi fans of Hitler were screaming;''You Jews are cowards and don't know how to fight and are like lambs and sheep, you deserve Hitler'' !
My father said all of a sudden people started throwing water from there windows all over these Nazi Jew haters.
The Jewish people yelled,'' pick a day/night come back we will be waiting for you!
These Nazi Jew haters never returned.
David and Goliath !

A fascinating (and similar) story about my great uncle, Mr. Leo Lovell.
Mr. Leo Lovell was a member of parliament in South Africa in the 1950's and a among the earliest political fighters of Apartheid.
In the 1930's he also succeeded, with great success, to suppress and dissolve several Neo Nazi meetings near and in Johannesburg.
It is mentioned briefly in this article:
https://www.jpost.com/Diaspora/For-the-love-of-justice-601328
And Mr. Lovell wrote about these events in a very riveting chapter of his autobiography.
I would be happy to submit an article or to help someone who is interested in following this story with source material.
(His daughter lives in Ra'anana and we have copies of his autobiography)

Concerning Mayor LaGuardia allowing the Nazi event to proceed.
Perhaps Mayor LaGuardia isn’t as great a Mayor as I thought. We all understand the First Amendment and the right to free speech. But Nazis has already seized control of Germany and Austria by violent means, and were a militant group. It’s message of hatred and persecution of Jews and organizing the masses against Democracy was well known. The Nazis were a clear and present danger to the United States. LaGuardia should have stopped the Nazis from their program.

Bravery
I have to admit I almost missed this story because one had to scroll down a bit in the email to see it. As usual, Dr. Miller's writing is spot on! As someone who's twice visited the Nazi's handiwork in Auschwitz and Birkenau with the March of the Living, I was sickened by the seven minute documentary at the end of her story. I encourage all to see it for themselves and witness Mr. Greenbaum's bravery in doing what he did. Who among us could exhibit such courage in the face of a Madison Square Garden filled with such Nazis? I'd like to think I could but who knows?!
(34) Sandy, July 7, 2020 2:49 PM
The article was nauseating....I knew there was antisemitism in America, then and now, but to allow such despicable activity to go on is beyond me. The video was also sickening. The people of our country still have a long way to go. P.S. During the pledge of allegiance, G-d's name is left out...that says it all.
(33) S.P. Hart, July 7, 2020 2:11 PM
Mayor LaGuardia Nazi Sympathizer?
The hero of the video was v. brave but also not too wise. He nearly got himself killed without accomplishing anything. If he had only been able to cut the sound system... Wherever there is anti-Semitism (or more recently "anti-Zionism" ) Jews must stand up against it as a group immediately before it becomes too wide spread, like a dangerous virus. Learnt from the video that New York Mayor LaGuardia (think airport) was a Nazi sympathizer. Of course the Italians in Europe under Mussolini were also Nazi sympathizers. The number of Italian-German Nazi sympathizers in the United States partially explains why the US did not initially (1939 Hitler invades Poland) get involved in WW2 until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (Dec 7, 1941)

(31) Yael, July 6, 2020 5:51 PM
I find it surprising for Aish to print this article now.
What does it have to do with anything? The country is being destroyed by Black Lives Don't Matter. The cops, the only thing standing between Jews and a pogrom (You might want to do some more research into what happened in LA.), are being defiled and defunded. And all you can discuss is Nazi demonstrations? Does that seem to be the problem to you now?
The wonderful woman who wrote the article about not being in a box surely is a very special woman. I'm just surprised Aish printed it. The Jewish community welcomes her in in every way possible (as we do to every Jew) and all she can write about is the stupid comments people make? It's surprising.
Growing up in a Rabbi's house, we welcomed all different types of Jews in for all different meals. And yes, sometimes people said dumb things to people and I wanted to crawl under the table. But every guest was always so kind, understanding and grateful for the welcome. They didn't judge us for sometimes saying or doing dumb things. They knew they also made mistakes. They blessed us and loved us for all we offered them and we were very close.
I love that woman. She's my sister and I love her. But I don't think her article is helpful for her or others. To call some houses "safe houses" as if she's a run-away slave? Bizarre.
And I love her but I hope she's not racist. I noticed she insisted on only dating white men. (And then accusing the shadchanim who selflessly give of their time and resources of racisim!)

believe it or not
believe it or not, people are using the same senseless excuse for not wearing masks. " it's my right to do as I please, under the constitution. If I don't want to wear a mask, I will NOT wear one." well, I have news for you. ANY FREEDOM THAT CAN HURT OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROHIBITED BY LAW . That includes hateful comments about Jews, blacks, chinese, etc. AND that includes not wearing a mask that can hurt or kill hundreds, if not thousands of people . The president should have known this. INCITING HATRED is not part of the constitutional freedoom of speech. The torah is also very serious about hurting other people's feelings or putting other people in danger.
(28) Helena Hageman, July 6, 2020 3:23 PM
really shocking. frightening. Good you posted it.
And we still are surprised that evil rises? When people choose a man to be their god, it will. No man's blood can give peace in our hearts, in the world. Kain blamed his brother, and killed him. That's history. Living history. How can we combat the evil in our hearts? Love is living relationship, seeing the other as another human being created in the image of G-d. We lost it. We lost Him. We lost Him in the way. Is there a way out?Who said i am the way, the truth and the life can. It is not about ideas. It is about a person full of G-ds love; to be known.

LaGuardia allowed Jewish Thugs to break up many Bund meetings
Mayor LaGuardia allowed Jewish Thugs to break up many Bund meetings. The Mayor may have outwardly been a practicing Catholic but he had a weekly radio show delivered in Yiddish. He also had a sister, who during World War II was incarcerated in Ravensbrueck concentration camp. The FBI was concerned enough about the possibility of the Nazis blackmailing Mayor LaGuardia through his sister that they put a tail on him 24/7. The FBI was afraid that he might do something to NYC at the behest of the Nazis such as turning off the electricity. At that time foUR stories underneath Grand Central Station was the control room for the New York City power grid.

A Jewish Hero
You appear to be a 1939 Bund fan. You allude to having insider information about the "Bund meetings" and the "FBI concerns" at that time. You even cite the "location of the control room for the power grid of New York city! How old are you? If you were born in 1939 when the events in the story occurred, you would be 81 today and would have been a newborn in your mother's arms at that time. To have insider knowledge about the Bund meetings, you would have to have been at least 21 and a member of their group which would make you 102 years old today. To have specific information about the FBI's security concerns of the day, you would have to have been an FBI agent at that time. This was 1939, before public leaks and the internet were invented! Your comment sounds more like a Troll fabrication based on a personal prejudice or agenda. Whether you are trolling Jewish websites to be annoying or you are paid to be a nuisance, please be aware that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob writes the final chapter. The story you read here is about Isadore Greenbaum. There were no Jewish thugs mentioned in the story. There was a Jewish hero, Isadore Greenbaum. It is Officer Greenbaum's story of courage, loyalty and service to our nation. In 1941, when the United States entered World War II, Isadore Greenbaum enlisted in the US Navy becoming an officer while serving among other patriotic Americans and ultimately defeating the enemy of the United States and of our Allies, Hitler and the Nazi army. Shalom.

Removal of under God in pledge is clue
The meeting was cloaked in American songs and false patriotism . Scriptures say that Whoever supports God’s chosen, Israel, will be blessed and whoever opposes will be cursed. When I hear people compare Trump to Hitler , they need to take their blinders off and see he has restored our relationship with Israel by endorsing Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel . God was 100% behind that - fulfillment of prophesy . Communist- Marxist groups remove God in order to lift their own Rules for increased personal power .

THE DAY THE MAYOR STUCK IT TO THE ANTI-SEMITES
Mayor La Guardia was a staunch Republican who defended free speech. He knew that if he didn't protect those Nazis there would be blood flowing like water. Very many New Yorkers hated those bigots. He too detested those Nazis. He finally got a chance to stick it to those anti semites when the KKK applied for a permit to march through the streets of New York. Of course they had to be granted a permit and also police protection. So he made sure that he had a very large number of police protecting them. All black cops! You see, those dumb anti semites did not know that La Guardia was actually a halachic Jew. His father, Achille La Guardia, was a Catholic from Cerignola, Italy, and his mother, Irene Luzzatto Coen, was a Jewish woman from Trieste, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; his maternal grandmother Fiorina (Luzzatto) Coen was a Luzzatto, a member of the prestigious Sephardic Italian-Jewish family of scholars, kabbalists, and poets and had among her ancestors the famous rabbis Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (the RamChaL) and Shmuel David Luzzatto. Many historians say that this 99th mayor was probably the most popular mayor of New York ever. Even Roosevelt would go out of his way to help him rather than his own Democrats.

Nazis were Christians
The rise of nazism and the Holocaust was just the culmination of christian hate toward Jews for the previous 1700 years. Germany was over 90% christian , so all these “ good Christians “ became nazis. And the “ good Christians “ of the world including here in America either outright helped in the slaughter or just closed their eyes to what was happening. The white European christian mentality is still alive and well in America today but they have a new target. Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims - basically anyone that does not fit into their narrative. Just look at the trump rallies and his racist remarks and that is all you need to know about “ good Christians “
Tsalach Sopher, July 5, 2020 6:00 PM
Trump is not a racist
Sorry Stewart but I have to disagree with your comment that Trump is a racist. I have never heard any racist remarks from Trump at any of his rallies. And I've watched many of them on YouTube.
He has gone beyond what most presidents have ever done for the Jewish people and Israel.
Please let's not lower the standards of this forum by injecting one's personal political opinions. It will only result in divisive arguments.

"Free Speech" is a Two Edged Sword
Free Speech can be a two-edged sword. Jim Jones convinced lots of good people to die for some cause. Many "decent" people can be convinced to join a cause if they feel it is in their interest. There are "leaders" who can be very influential. I understand that even FDR was careful NOT to offend Charles Lindbergh (50% of the US agreed with Lindbergh) who protested against going to war because those Nazis looked very strong.
I lived in NYC growing up and almost on any day you could gather 10,000 plus people to go to a ballgame! Greenbaum was a very brave person, bless his soul. And of course, even today, anti-Semitism sadly continues to exist.
Free Speech can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

I turned my stomach to read about and see the rally,
This is the first time Ilearned about the disgusting hatred of so many americans had against Jews mirroring Hitlers muchshamos views.
I can t imagine how much hatred has been passed down to the next generations. Nowonder there is so much antisemitism in the world today.
it scares me and makes me sad.

Alarming to say the least...!!!
Whoa! This is indeed more than alarming for in some respects it reminds of some of what we are hearing today in the media; and i am also reminded of an article from the Liberty magazine (a magazine on Religious Freedom & separation of church & state) i read in the recent past entitled, “Slouching towards Democratic Totalitarianism” by Elijah Muvundura, which sounds like an oxymoron, but i tell you it is well worth the read, & addresses some of what we are seeing in America today & there is a certain parallel to that rally & its slogans!!

My mother was subjected to Nazi hatred...in Baltimore!
My mother (שתחי) was a ten year old girl when the war started. She lived half a block from Johns Hopkins Hospital on a block of rowhouses with no front yard and about ten feet of sidewalk all along the block. Her neighbors 2 houses up the block were “proud German Americans.” They dew a perpendicular line on either side of their house and declared the sidewalk in front of their rowhone (public property, of course) to be “German land, no Jews allowed!” They insisted that my mother walk in the gutter! This went on openly for two years, until December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked, and war was declared against japan and Germany. Suddenly, the chalk lines disappeared. Suddenly, they became loyal Americans...

come home to Israel now
" A Bund official explained that “(t)he Spirit which opened the West and built our country is the spirit of the militant white man,” and claimed Nazism was a quintessentially American outlook. Kuhn reassured the rally goers, “It has then always been very much American to protect the Aryan character of this nation”
I believe that there is ample evidence supporting much of statement above and there has always been a racist element in US politics,I would not go so far as to say Naziism ,even pre holocaust was a quintessentially American outlook, but it was not so foreign either.
Today the many of right wing idealogical heirs to those German American Bund members are folks with MAGA hats at Trump rallies .
I would add that the the anti Israel platform of the left wing of the Democratic party including the BLM movement often crosses over into antisemitism., so it seems to me the future for committed Jews in the USA is not encouraging. My unsolicited advice for religious Jews and any other Jews who do not want their kids to assimilate away is to know Israel wants you and you need Israel.Make plans now.
Yisroel, July 5, 2020 6:08 PM
Please don’t fall for the anti-Trump media narrative...
I see no reason to believe that MAGA hat wearers are White supremacists any more than I believe the narrative that, sadly, 3 prominent Jews have been caught lying and undermining the President repeatedly: Chuck Schumer, Jerry Nadler “judicial committee head” and Adam Schiff with Nancy Pelosi led that “Russia, Russia, Russia” or “Charlottesville!!!! He supported the Nazis!” He didn’t! (Listen to the entire video!)
The MAGA supporters are staunchly supportive of Israel’s right of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria. That’s the opposite of not just the left wing zealots of the Democrat party. It has become mainstream and held unfortunately by many leftist Jews!.
I’m all for Aliyah to Eretz Yisrael. 2 of my children and their families have made Aliyah and one more plans to leave a few months after his Wedding, Bezras HaShem.
But don’t blame Trump for the antisemitism of the white fringe.... Blame Schumer, Nadler & Schiff.

Many Jews in US
You struggle a lot defending Trump to death. You can only think of justifying Trump from all his horrible acts and words because he supported Israel. Get over. There are many million Jews living here in the US who aren’t going to Israel to live and Trump has increased by many fold the danger against Jews and other people here. While your plan to move to Israel is wonderful you aren’t caring at all for what happens to all Jews in the United States. That’s a very self serving defense of a horrible human being.

Don't forget the Jewish Mob
The Jewish Mob disrupted Nazi Bund meetings in New York, New Jersey and various other places , beating members up, throwing them out of windows, trashing their signs, bashing their cars, etc. The official response of the Jewish establishment was one of horror at the unruly behaviour of those criminal elements in the community they normally condemned, but for the average Jew on the street, the Jewish Mob were the heroes of the day.
Anonymous, July 5, 2020 6:12 PM
And don’t forget the NYTumes and FDR
Jews were so thankful to FDR that they “overlooked” his clear antiSemitism, a hallmark of the elite and the democrat party.
(The president of Harvard or Yale, in 1935, told his recruiters “no more than fivejews in the freshman class!” FDR refused to allow bombers to bomb the gas chambers, etc. etc.)

Some want to change the city of St Louis because of the 13 century king . The city of St Louis had life and History of it’s own. We MUST never surrender to those want tear down our history. Another event in France d shows how dangerous this is five hundred years later during Thr French Revolution. Heads got chopped off off , statues were destroyed. The reign of terror did not turn out well. Let’s not make that mistake.

FASCINATING HORRIFYING
SO IMPORTANT FOR US TO KNOW THE ANTI JEWISH MOVEMENT IN OUR COUNTRY. IT IS A 'HISTORY LESSON' NEEDED. THANK YOU. I WILL KEEP TODAY'S 'ARTICLE' AND REFER BACK TO IT.......................

Where are they now?
This contrasts with the self-proclaimed "Jewish" organizations today that work with Jew-haters such as Al Sharpton and BLM. Where is the "leadership" today?

Evil people.
Proverbs 4:16 17.

Nazi's.
Their arrogance and hatred is amazing. I really don't see how they sleep at night. In God's Word, it mentions people that lay awake at night pondering how they can set traps to rob, steal, and take advantage of other people. So be aware.

Powerful article
Rav Noach zt"l would have been proud of this proud Jew.
Hi mesiras nefesh (taking great risks) for the Jewish people is an important lesson we all need to learn from.

Always great to hear Rabbi Pliskin although I have to relive the Colts victory as Giant's fan
I agree with the Happy Rabbi that Rav Noach zt"l would say that Jew was brave. I do question his judgement bringing his wife and young kid to a Nazi rally.Fortunately the police saved him from no more than a beating and it probably was a good memory for him. Still, there are times standing up as a proud Jew makes sense and at other times not so sure.

Maybe it wasn’t in his plans.
He probably wasn’t planning to get up there but in such a place you never know what you’re capable of doing.
