A couple of years ago I remember seeing an incredible contrast on YouTube. A very large and very old leatherback sea turtle (which is on the endangered species list) had been caught in a fisherman’s net off the coast of Gaza. The beautiful creature was hauled ashore and surrounded by a large crowd of Gazans. One of the men in the crowd explained to the reporter how the meat of the turtle would feed Gazan children, who were suffering due to the Israeli occupation, and the blood would help cure various ailments. The turtle was dragged behind a truck, flipped on its back and then slaughtered.
Further up the Mediterranean coast in Israel, a much younger and smaller sea turtle had been injured by a boat and lost one of its limbs. The turtle was rescued by some Israelis and then taken to a special turtle sanctuary where it was operated on, nurtured back to health and then released back into the sea.
The contrast couldn’t have been more extreme.
When I heard about the impending exchange of Gilad Shalit for over a thousand Palestinians prisoners, many with “blood on their hands,” I was reminded of those two turtles.
To me those two turtles represented a microcosm of the values of Israel and the Jewish people versus the enemies that surround us.
In the summer of 2006, after Israel had withdrawn from Gaza, Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists from an Israeli tank guarding Israel’s border with Gaza. The terrorists had tunneled under the security fence and after killing the other members of the crew, dragged Shalit back to Gaza. In violation of international law no one was allowed to have contact with him, not even the Red Cross.
Israel has thousands of Palestinian security prisoners. All are treated humanely according to international law. They have the right to legal representation, visitation from family and the Red Cross and even educational opportunities while they are in prison.
The most striking contrast is the attitude of the two sides towards freeing these captives. The Israeli government has worked tirelessly for the release of Gilad. So important is the life of one soldier that the government of Israel is about to repeat what it has done numerous times before: embark on controversial, lopsided prisoner exchanges in order to free a few or even one Israeli prisoner. These exchanges have proven to be very problematic; hundreds of Israelis have been killed or wounded by terrorist who were released in one of these exchanges and then returned to terrorism. Controversy aside, the concern for the life of one soldier is a powerful testament to the humanity and moral strength of Israel and the profound concern that Judaism has always held for the value of life, a value which the Jewish people taught the world.
The contrast with Israel’s adversaries in the Middle East couldn’t be more extreme. The first question the International community should really be asking is why does the Arab world have so little respect for its own people that it thinks the life of one Jew is worth a thousand plus Arabs? Aren’t these exchanges usually a one-for-one deal? Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. These are the people who brought to the world hijackings and suicide bombings, who raise their children to want to be martyrs and who fire rockets from schools and hospitals. They have demonstrated time and time again that human life, even the life of their own people, has very little value.
Former Prime Minister Golda Meir once said, “We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.” Sadly the Arab world seems to moving further away from this goal and real peace still seems like a distant dream.
But let’s not end on a negative note. The Jewish people are about to celebrate the Holiday of Sukkot. A major theme of Sukkot is joy, to appreciate the beauty and wonder of God’s creation and focus on the specialness and the unique mission of the Jewish people.
As we celebrate Sukkot this year let us be aware that even though the Jewish people and Israel face many dangers and challenges, there is much to take pleasure in. Let us take particular pleasure in the values that we the Jewish people have not only taught the world but have lived by for centuries despite enduring great hardship at the hands of the nations of the world.
Despite living in the roughest “neighborhood” in the world-surround by hostility, war and terrorism, the Jews of Israel have not only maintained their dignity, but have a created a thriving, productive, free, democratic and technologically advanced country that is truly a testament to the power and humanity of the Jewish people, the Jewish spirit and the Jewish Faith.
For Shalit's parents and others who have worked so tirelessly for these 1900-plus days to secure his release, the level of joy at this moment is unfathomable. Yes, the deal is controversial, reasonable people have reason to be opposed. Irrespective, let us all give thanks for the reunification of a Jewish boy with his family and his people.

"Our enemies?"
Could you not have said somewhere in this article, that not all Arabs are bad? A one liner, maybe? Not all arabs are extremists... but why does the Arab world have so little respect for its own people. No wait, that wouldn't make sense. Because in this article, as in many articles that I come across, you are generalising all Arabs ("Sadly the Arab world", "These are the people that", "they") into a box or portraying them (all - as no classification is made) as vile monstors who have no moral - which goes into the readers mind. A little like what Hitler did to the Jews, don't you think? Making the public think that we are bugs, vermin, inhuman. I don't think it's intentional, but never the less. With great power (like writing or speaking) comes great responsibility.
Beverly Kurtin, October 27, 2011 7:54 PM
Sticks and stones...
You don't think that the Arabs call us The Jews? There are decent Arabs, maybe the majority of the are decent, I have no way of knowing. But this I know, I had a Jew hater tell me that I ought to be deported from the United States because I am a Jew. I'm a third generation American citizen, why should I or any other American citizen be deported, and to where I don't suppose it would surprise you when the name of the person who told me to leave my country had an Arab name. If the Arabs don't want to be painted with a wide brush, then let them act in a humane manner instead of replacing one dictator with yet another. They do not have the foggiest idea of what a democracy is or how it works.

I agree that the holiness of bringing a Jewish boy back to our people trumps the wickedness on the other side, no matter what role politics plays. Hashem is proud of us, let's be united and bring Moshiach once and for all!

not harsh enough
Rabbi, I'd give up all the prisoners for Gilad. What good does it do to feed and clothe and educate all those Arab prisoners? A waste of money. Pay our soldiers instead and keep patorling the enemy borders. It's only when we let these creeps in do they do damage. Bomb them when they send rockets, tit for tat. Any further discussion is to give legitimacy to lunacy. That's on the physical realm. On the spiritual realm, we need to learn more Torah and truly commit our hearts to observing the Mitzvot. Love your work Mordehay
(172) Henry Minega, October 20, 2011 9:40 AM
I was not very much in agreement but i now realize the exchange was the least. Israelis value life and liberty and no number of terrorist prisoners are equal to the dear boy's life and liberty. And yes those terrorists may get right back to terrorism, but every Israeli should continue to believe that 'right will might' and that 'vengeance is the Lord's' so every one of those terrorists will some how, some where pay, be it through their own lives or poverty and strife in their communities (which they themselves generously ensure).

No price on Gilad's freedom
There is no price on the return of OUR Gilad to his family and to Israel. 1000 freed prisoners makes no difference to the number of millions of Palestinians with their hatred for us Jews, all capable of perpetrating viscious inhuman acts against the people of Israel. We need to find a way to work for Peace - let's begin with PRAYER. Am Yisroel Chai.

Glad for the Shalit Family
We're all happy for the Shalit family as the specifics of his kidnapping was heartbreaking. As far's Israelis' safety, we just keep praying all the time & hope that the IDF higher ups are of good judgement and remember the citizens' safety and safeguard the country, seeing the PA & Hamas for what it is and not be disillusioned by them.

A Good Plan for Israel
Do not air publicly about the horrendous price you paid for Gilad Shalit's return although families and friends of the slain by terrorists have every right to speak privately about there loved ones murdered by terrorists. Gilad Shalit needs to recover and not be ashamed that he was freed. Let Israel respond to their murdering enemies as King David slaying the Philistines. Many enemies slain for one Jewish life. Perhaps your enemies won't be so bold when they realize the price they will pay!

Maztle Tov! On the release of Gilad, and on a great artilcle!
You are so right about everything. Yes it is very disheartening to those who fear recrimination from these ungrateful, unholy, unprincipled men and women who are being released! However, G-d is not mocked, He will continue to defend His people! He will not allow the wicked to prosper! It only seems like that sometimes! But in the end they will be the sorriest, the longest! I urge you rebels to repent and make peace with Israel while the opportunity is held out to you! G-d is patient and merciful, and so is His people, but it is Written that He will not always strive with man!

...same example in South Africa...
The sad part is that we have the same situation here in South Africa. White people simply deported illegal immigrants - black people burn down their shops, set the owner on fire and while he is dying an agonising death by fire, he is thrown with rocks and beaten with sticks, including teenagers. Only difference: when you mention this you are racist and politically incorrect; but when you are black and you do this it is simply reffered to as "xenophobia".

Pictures from exchange hilight differences
I was struck by the visual picture of the difference in well-being between Gilad and the Palestinian prisoners upon release. My first reaction to Gilad was, "Nebuch, he looks like a concentration camp survivor." The palestinians looked like they were on a bus back from a day at the beach, burly, well fed and suntanned. Full of zest. I was also disgusted when the Red Cross applauded the release of the palestinians, "huh?" In the US if you had someone serving multiple life terms for murder and was released after a few years, there would be nothing short of riots in the streets. May Hashem protect klal Yisroel.

Exchange is a mistake
While I feel most deeply for Gilad and his family, and to his family no price is to great to pay to have their son returned home, the particulars of the exchange is a major mistake on Israel's part. Yes, we Jews value human life far greater than the Palestinians and other Arabs, but by setting free a thousand plus murderers and other terrorists, Israel leaves itself open to new attacks by these same thugs. This lopsided exchange will only encourage Hamas to kidnap even more Israeli soldiers and citizens. Hamas leaders have already said so. For them it is a win-win situation and Israel loses. Israel should only exchange 50 Israelis for only 1 Arab terrorist. Do the math.
Michael Robson, October 19, 2011 11:02 AM
Changing their views
What if during their imprisonment these terrorists could be shown the truth about the lopsided thinking they have, and when they know they experienced kindness, would they not go back home with a different viewpoint? How many have been recaputured for the same crimes (unless they wanted to go back to prison for the good food and conditions of course). I am just suggesting that some good might come of it.
IrisB, October 22, 2011 3:11 AM
Get real
Mr Robson, do you really believe that while in Israeli prison, any of the imprisoned Palestinians saw the error of their ways? That they felt that their wardens were benevolent and it was just that they were in prison? Get real. I would venture to say that their imprisonment only hardened their position and belief that their terrorist acts were right and just and the only regret they may have is they did not kill more Israelis.

He Is Back!!!
Greetings to the Family and Friends of Gilad Shalit, We rejoice with you physically and spiritually that Gilad Shalit,is back, the news made my day even as I was having a bad business day but when I saw the Facebook page pup-up on my Blackberry phone I screamed so loud that people in the Licensing department in Qatar Doha’s Ministry of Trade and Commerce thought I won a lottery … That is to show you how joyous I was to hear this long awaited news. I and my wife have been praying for such day to come to pass. We are not Israelis, we are Nigerians Living in Thailand but we stand behind with Israel as Friends and supporters spiritually and financially. This might sound selfish to those who lost family members and friends by exchanging hundreds of murderers just for One single soul, but it’s worth doing because this is a proof to the whole world that a single living Israel soul is worth more than hundreds….. My the God of Abraham Bless You From Mr. and Mrs. Emmanuel Fidel

Would have Elijah and Samuel agreed at the exchange?

(148) joel, October 18, 2011 12:58 PM
international law should should not be brought up
i cant understand why in the same sentence that you said israeli soldiers were killed you say Gilad was kidnapped against "international law"! So killing soldiers is nopt against international law? and this is same 'internationmal law" that forbids us building in jerusalem...lets stop diminishing ourselves by bringing up international law....Just call it Human and moral law instead
(147) Heshy, October 18, 2011 12:41 AM
Now the world will know....?
I have read a few supporting articles on the SHalit-terrorist exchange. They all make the same point. "Now the world will recognize.... Israel's value on human life........ the difference between Israeli and Arab culture......etc." Folks, for last 4 decades, Israel has demonstrated their moral values in contrast to the Arabs. They sent soldiers into the Jenin streets rather then sending in the Air Force. they carpet bomb Palestinian populations with warnings before an attack. Thousands more examples of how more humane we are in comparsion to the Arab world. THE BOTTOM LINE IS, the world knows but does not care. They will not care that we exchanged thousands of murderers for one soldier. YOu won't see any interviews of Europeans slapping their foreheads saying, "WOW, I was wrong about those Jews, they are really nice people."

Halacha
2 comments: * Golda Meir's quote “We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us” is actually quite stupid, and shows how blind Jews actually are. The arabs DO love their kids and they believe that these actions are RIGHT. For that reason are proud of, and encourage, the actions of their kids. * It would be interesting to know the halacha regarding this ridiculous exchange. For an army that has many dangerous complicated missions behind it's name, I don't see why we could not at least attempt to free Shalit by force. As usual, it;s the Jewish sickness that comes in to play by taking the path that offends the rest of the world the least, and screws us the most.
(141) Dr. Yossi Templeman, October 17, 2011 1:01 PM
In Israel we know from the statistics of previous years that next year about 400 people (plus or minus 20) will die in traffic accidents. We just don't yet know their names. Similarly we know from previous terror releases that 60 % go back to terror and that over the years we get about 1.5 new dead (and I'm not counting the wounded!) per released murder. (By the way, how many people are aware of the fact that in the recent "minor" release of 400 terrorists for Tenanbaum and 3 bodies, 42 people have already been murdered by those released!!). So it is clear that unfortunately over the years hundreds will be murdered in exchange for Shalit. And what's really strange is that if Chamas had asked to be allowed to execute only one randomly chosen Jew in exchange for Shalit we would have never agreed… All the above doesn't take into account the encouragement factor that some of the Arab pishers now sitting on the fence will say: wow why not kill some Jews. By doing this I'll become an Arab hero, and if caught I'll only spend a few years in a 5 star jail till the next exchange... Thus Jewish blood is being made very cheap indeed. If we could see the future more clearly and know now the names of the future victims they would have also demonstrated across the street from the Shalit family saying "how dare you have me killed in exchange for your son". But we only know the approximate numbers who'll be killed and not their names, so there was no one to counteract the public and media pressure on behalf of this tragic "deal". For some insight into the halachic limitations on the mitzvah of "pidyon shivuyim", a good starting point is with the Mishnah and associated Gemara in Gittin daf 45a.
Anonymous, October 22, 2011 3:18 AM
I agree.
Dr. Templeman, I agree with you. The deal was not in Israel's interest at all and greatly diminishes the value of Jewish life. BTW - I enjoyed being your student at Lehman back in the mid 70's
(140) Beverly Kurtin, October 17, 2011 1:31 AM
Do no murder
Is the release of one Israeli soldier worth releasing a thousand Arabs, many who have committed cold-blooded murder? ABSOLUTELY, no question about it. The life of ONE Israeli is worth ten thousand Arabs' lives. Why? Because we honor life, we cling to it perhaps more dearly because of how few of us exist on this little planet we're on. There are only about 14 million of us. Hashem alone knows how many more we would have been had the Shoah not happened. Because we are so small a minority, each and every Jewish life is more precious than diamonds and gold; thus it is with Gilad. I've never met him and chances are that I never will, but he is as much my brother as my sibling, but I love him and am overjoyed at his pending release. The only negative thing is that several COLD-BLOODED MURDERS WITH BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS WILL BE RELEASED. Is it still worth a thousand low-life Arabs for the release of ONE Israeli soldier? You bet it is. No other country would do that, not even the United States. The U.S. is one of a hand full of countries that respects human life as much as does Israel. Yet, as good as the U.S. is, they do not like to talk with criminals of criminal groups such as Hamas. ONLY Israel would do what she is doing and I'm bursting with pride that she honors human life to this extent. Once again, Israel shows the world that we are not who or what they think, but the lesson will be lost as soon as the Arabs can cook up another BIG LIE.
(139) Geraldo Avnery, October 16, 2011 9:29 PM
We can suggar coat as much as we want, but the truth is out there: Hamas has win big! Big win for Hammas. We can say that we are a moral people and that we are better than them, but the truth is that hundreds of cold blood terrorists are free to go and kill again. Unfortunately that is the truth. I feel sorry for the family of those hundreds of innocent people who were killed by those monsters... and now they have to watch them to go free and happy back to their home... Sad day for Israel.. Big win for Hammas...
(138) Rose DeRenzo, October 16, 2011 6:42 PM
The people who love life and not death!
Israel indeed has taken a risk by releasing prisoners who have the blood of the Jewish people on their hands. But this nation is a light for the world, for they love life and not death. To look at the odds of 1000-1, then ask what nation in the M.E. wants peace not war.
(137) chaich, October 16, 2011 12:46 PM
Only you Israel will make such a deal. Because only you have a soul that has known torture. Only you know how to sacrifice when because your Forefathers made difficult choices. Only you are in my heart!
(136) Alan S., October 16, 2011 10:52 AM
Certainly this exchange is fraught with angst for obvious reasons. Do we save one Jewish soul now, or prevent future Jewish souls from being put in harms way by the terrorists that are being released? Even Hashem would probably weep at this dilemma. I have one small problem with the article, and that is the assumption that we give any credence to what the international community thinks. With a few exceptions, the only thing the international community is concerned with is oil. Sorry to seem cruel, but think of Durban the next time UNICEF comes knocking for donations.
(135) mark ag, October 16, 2011 4:36 AM
The analogy with the turtles' treatment is well taken but take it a step further that organisms producing millions of young provide virtually no protection/care for their young (terrorist Arabs), whereas organisms producing few young provide excellent care(Israelis). The latter have a better chance of survival and is characteristic of advanced life forms. Even the numbers for both groups/sides correspond. I could illustrate other analogies, too.

Why should freed terrorists be allowed to stay in Israel?
Why should freed terrorists be allowed to stay in Israel? Free them on condition they go to another country and never return to Israel.
Dvirah, October 16, 2011 4:03 PM
They Do Go Home
The released terrorists will not be staying in Israel, they will each go home. My only hope is that, amongst them all, some will have learned that their actions were founded on lies, and will have the courage, once home, to tell others the truth also.

Don't forgot our other captive soldiers
The release of Gilad Shalit, may it really happen, is certainly cause for joy. May all who worked for Gilad's release also work tirelessly to bring home Israel's other missing and captured soldiers: Zvi Feldman, Yehuda Katz, Zacharia Baumel, Ron Arad, Guy Hever. Any discussion between any world leader and Syria and Lebanon needs to include the long-overdue return of these soldiers to their homeland. Perhaps Aish will take the lead on publicizing their fate? Hag Sameach.
(132) Ann Levin, October 15, 2011 9:02 AM
We will all share the joy of the Shalit family and long for the day when Gilad returns home. However, the knowledge that those who have murdered and maimed our fellow citizens are to be released to the heros welcome that surely awaits them does not bode well. We will have to be so much more vigilant with our personal and national security as never before. Our soldiers are all our sons and daughters and have to be brought back home.

I am an Israeli soldier and my job is to protect the citizens of Israel if I was kidnapped I would not want to be part of a trade that would result in the deaths of more Jews.
Amber, October 16, 2011 5:26 PM
But, Gilad has really no say in this. Even if he was opposed, would the Palistinians listen to him and agree? No, they want their own back, despite what he says or thinks. Being a prisoner, you are stripped of dignity, privacy, safety, and yes...opinion in your treatment and release. Gilad literally has no say in this whatsoever. His (or your) objections would fall on deaf ears.
Anonymous, October 17, 2011 4:46 PM
You are assuming Gilad knows the details of his release. Your statement is an easy one from where you are perched now; should you ever [G-d forbid!] be in a situation such as Gilad, you may change your mind.
Anonymous, October 17, 2011 1:20 AM
I AGREE 100% THAT IT IS WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DON'T GET ME WRONG. AND IF I WAS CAPTURED I WOULD WANT THE TRADE TO BE MADE AS WELL but if this keeps on happening they will eventually realize that every time they capture one of our soldiers it drives the whole country along with all the rest of the Jews insane and with the help of these 1027 evil terrorists they will capture more and will return them only if we release more of their terrorists
(130) Anonymous, October 14, 2011 6:36 PM
Next time someone tells me how astute in business and other negotiations we Jews are, I'll remind them of this swap. "Shalit's parents and the others..." should have been pressuring arabs and the UN, not the Israeli government, to save him and not by releasing 1000 enemies who will surely kill many more in the future. We have taught those who hate us that we are weak and foolish. Since when did we become such lemmings?
Alan S., October 16, 2011 10:31 AM
These comments are worthy, except for the part about how astute in business...we Jews are. We are talking about the life of a Jewish person -- not about negotiating for the price of a car.

War is war
At war, people fight with what they have. Israel highly values every Jewish life and the Gazans know this. Don't expect war to be pretty, or people to find much good to say about ones enemies.
(127) Abba'Shaul, October 14, 2011 11:23 AM
In the book of Exodus 19:14 God tells the people of Israel that they shall be the kingdom of priests for God, peculiar and Holy nation on earth; Inside the scriptures too God also gives high priest power to evaluate human being dedicated to God and give financial price for remdemption in accordance to the price placed by high priest shall be the worth of any man.I am happy today that upon all the aclaimed achievement of the Arabs a thousand plus of the Arab citizen cannot worth more than a Jewish boy and Jews still remained the God's to place the value on humankind. If one Jewish boy is above theArabs of difference classes then the Arab citizens and nations should show remorse for many Jewish they have murdered because they are innocent and remained innocent forever, and likewise other nations and religious that had murdered or caused mehem to Jews or Israel as a nation. I thank the leaders of Israel for always setting standard that the crude oil, gas, kor'an, emirates, kingships, league and etc in Arab world cannot attend nor achieve to the end of their gang up.May God bless nathanyahu and his government.

The Joy of Finding the "Lost Sheep"
In my humble opinion, this whole circumstance is likened to the 'indescribable joy' in finding Gilad; he's the 'lost sheep' which God would not abandon till He has found him. This is the kind of message of Hope of Assurance that the Almighty Eternal One True God in heaven is sending to the nation of Israel. He's the Pillar of Cloud by day and Pillar of Fire by night that quenches and silences all the enemies that are against Israel.

Needs further checking out
Israel should require that the Red Cross get the right to visit our Israeli Soldier and verify his physical, and mental condition. If he has been mistreated, the world should be aware of this, and the Hamas should be made to explain such !
(123) Roberta E. Dzubow, October 14, 2011 2:55 AM
Good article, one regrettable sentence - you need not publicize this
The Arab world keeps up the fiction that they are in desperate shape -starving and deprived -because of Israel. Writing that the turtle would be used to feed hungry children- reinforces that image.

i am delighted that gilad shalit will be coming home. i am troubled that the people being released..the ransom for his release is their freedom..will now be free to terrorize, murder, who knows what. an eye for an eye this is not..does anyone have a moral imperative to make such a bargain? what of the people who these being released will surely injure ,maim or kill..what are their lives worth, the freedom of one for their loss?

At the end of the day....
Many people have extraordinarily good reasons to believe that this swap is potentially dangerous, stupid, and a sign of Israelis waving the white flag. Well..they're right. It's strategically an awful move. Everyone knows this. Please bear in mind our nation's leaders are involved and they're not stupid people. Hamas does look at t his as a victory and it is giving them the message that kidnapping works and the possibility of releasing very dangerous, blood thirsty haters of Israel puts our citizens at a great rist. But, at the end of the day, if Gilad were your kid, no matter how right wing you were, the swap would be more than OK to you.

At first blush the exchange is overwhelming,on second thought the balance is about right.I conclude that even the Palestinians agree that it takes over 1000 criminal terrorists to be the equal of one Israeli soldier.Welcome back Sgt.Shilat !!!

NO
I, like so many others, are happy that CPL Shalit is being returned to Eretz Yisrael. I therefore agree, in part, on what has already been said. I strongly disagree with this decision and the price paid by the families of the Israelis who were killed by releasing the 315 murdering terrorists who are responsible for the death of so many Israeli children, women, and men. I am concerned beyond words at the bargaining chip given to terrorists by releasing the 1,000 potential murderers including the 315 who are proven murderers. What has ever happened to 'we don't negotiate, we don't bargain with, we don't compromise with terrorists'. As a former Captain and paratrooper, in the United States Army, I stand behind President Obama's decision to 'capture or KILL' with the emphansis on 'KILL' as was demonstated by our troops taking out bin Laden, Awalki, 13 other terrorist leaders, and two of Iran's top nuclear scientist. Having lived in Israel in 1990-91 and 2003-04 I never thought and never have been critical in public of the choices Israel has made during the last 63 years. Since I am talking, primarily, to chevra in this email I hope I can forgive myself. Chatz Semeach, Y'Chetzkal ben Yoseph

deal for gilad shalit
i know how much the family wants him home, but the price we are paying with the release of terrorists will only result in more deaths be it of soldiers or citizens here in Israel. I am sorry to say this but we all know that this is the truth and the big question is if he would go for this deal knowing what the results will be. it is a very difficult thing but I beleive it is a sign of our weakness. we should have dealt with this in the first week by a deal they couldn't refuse gilad shalit in 36 hours or gaza is put to sand. but they would have not agreed because they do not care about life only death and power. we have given them the power and it will only lead to more kidnappings and death. is that a price to pay for evey soldier who goes out to battle?
(113) Caryn Cohen, October 13, 2011 6:08 PM
The Pros and Cons!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a mother of a 21 yr old son who is in the army, a combat unit, and I am always saying prayers for him and all the soldiers in this country. I can not imagine being in that position and the pain, trials and tribulations, they incurred. My heartfelt compassion and the blessing from Hashem may be with you. On the other hand, it is an unfair trade 1 for 1000 murders and terrorists to be let loose. G-d knows where they will go and only to bring more danger to the world and especially Israe. I praise Bibi for doing his utmost and once again I don't know how I would react being in the same situation. I think the state of Israel has to hire more police, security personnel, more undercover, and more secret service (Mosad) and a High Alert should be a more permanent pressence.
(112) Lily Lindsay, October 13, 2011 5:07 PM
Golda Meir's comments are just as true today.
What an unequal situation, 1 innocent man ( Gilad Shalit)freed, after years of confinement in solitude. 1,000 villians freed from prison who have been well treated, allowed visitors and able to study whatever subject they wish.
(111) Dr. Simcha Baker, October 13, 2011 5:06 PM
We have taught the world nothing!
You surely jest when you say that Jews have taught the 'value of life' to the world. But to be fair, even if we have indeed tried to teach the world, it is not listening. The threat of the Torah and its ethical and moral teachings are an anathema to those who need a scapegoat to blame all their ills on and, unfortunately, the Jewish image is frequently besmirched by its own doings or misdeeds. The Jewish people were 'requested' by HASHEM to be the 'light of the nations', a task that we have not succeeded in accomplishing to our detriment. However, let us not forget that THOSE who defy HASHEM do so at their own risk and which leads frequently to their own destruction - Jew and non-Jew alike.

I would like to suggest to the Israeli government to put a micro chip on those dangerous prisoners they are about to release. This way they can keep a track on them and make sure they are not up to no good.
Judith Sinclair, October 15, 2011 12:59 AM
Great Idea!
I agree -- microchips are a great idea. I hope it is done!
(108) leah, October 13, 2011 4:11 PM
Proportionality
Next time Israel is accused of disproportionate responses to acts of terrorism the response should be that the Arabs, themselvess have determined the ratio of the value of Arab versus Jewish life. That ratio is one Jewish life equals one thousand Arab lives.

about the sea turtle and was very sad to read it. How could anyone hurt a sea turtle is beyond me. What savages. I remember reading that the Palestinians (Arabs From Jordan) thought the blood of the turtle would help them sexually. Unbelievable.

Welcome Home, Shalit!
Thank you G_D for Shalit's safety. Israel's enemies are gloating over this as they know fully well that the value of one Jew could release thousands more of those satanic terrorists whose goal is to steal, kill and destroy Israel. No one is safe since they are armed by the murderous regimes of Syria and Iran. Destroy them before they destroy Israel!

Turtles aside
I don't know if the sea turtle is a very good analogy if the fol were hard up for food but that aside this case does say much on the values of the tow sides and the even handedness or rather open handed response to a people not seemingly welcoming peace in their actions..where it seems coexistance is not what they desire but sole existence.

But...but...but.....
The only question I have is this (and please forgive me because it's kinda negative): one Israeli soldier who might not even be alive for 1000 Palestinian terrorists??? I hate to countenance the idea, but somehow, even though I'm seriously hoping for the opposite, I'm thinking the only way Gilad is coming back is in a pine box....please HaShem, may I be totally wrong....if I am wrong, may my Israeli brethren forgive me for even thinking the statement. sad to say
sad to say that giving up thousands of arab prisoners with blood on their hands will not satisfy the arabs who say they will trade shalit for them. they will only come back and kidnap another Israeli because they know trading one Israeli will get their many murderers released from prison. it will be a cycle that will never end. I can understand why Israel will do this, they love their children and their own people unlike most arabs who hate Israelis more than they love their own, just as the ex. PM of Israel stated, the arabs must love their children more than hate the Israelis if they are to desire peace instead of Piece of land for murder. I pray shalit does come home and all who would have had a child in his position would want the same no matter how many murderers must be let go in order to accomplish it.
(91) daphna judith goren, October 13, 2011 1:00 AM
Gilad Shalit has been on the minds and in the hearts of all American Jews for quite some time now. There was great outrage about his kidnapping as there will be great joy upon his release and return to Israel. What remains to be said is combined TODA LE ELOHIM AND CHAZAK VE AMAZ upon his return.
(90) Rodney Wilkinson, October 13, 2011 12:43 AM
Gilad Shalit
One Jewish soldier is worth more than a thousand Arab terrorists. Psalm 11:5-7 The Lord examines the righteous and the wicked. He hates the lover of violence. He will rain burning coals and sulfur on the wicked; a scorching wind will be their portion. He loves righteous deeds. The upright will see His face. God Bless Israel, Amen & Amen.

Yes and No
I do (and have in the past) ponder the reality that Israel will give up many prisoners in exchange for one. I understand they are forced into this bizzage imbalance - often referred to as "double standard". However, as horrible as it seems to me, I can understand, that people who are hungry and in need of medical support would value the food source and medical benefit of a very old sea turtle. Of course, I/we will never comprehend cultural brutality. It would be less horrific had they been more humane in the slaughter of the turtle. The Israelis who saved an injured sea turtle didn't have the same needs. I am sad that this article totally vilifies all Gazans/Arabs with this sad story. Let's just rejoice that Gilad will be home.

Im against this travesty!
How can a sane people allow murderers who have not repented {and are proud and joyous about their murderous intentions} to run free? This is not moral, this is not enlightened, it is plain and simple STUPID. Our enemies are laughing in our faces and we walk around thinking we are so civilized. We are STUPID to allow these murderers to resume their murderous plans. STUPID is as STUPID does!

A Light Amongst the Nations
I also heard that they were asking (receiving?) one thousand for one in the exchange - if you multiply the 7 million or so Jews living in Israel by 1,000 you arrive at the population of the world. Yes, another confirmation that Israel is the apple of God's eye, a light to ALL the nations, the center of God's universe, and His special chosen people. Shalom

1,000 terrorists ?
1,000 men must cost a fortune to the israeli government, but I keep wondering if these people are nice and friendly Arabs. I suspect most of them are terrorists and will resume terrorism. Releasing them is a good human gesture, but every single former prisoner who returns to terrorism must be killed immediately.

Life is not quantitative.
The trade for Gilad Shalit is not about the value of X lives for Y life. It is, purely and simply, about the value of life itself.
(71) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 8:29 PM
First if all Jews don't eat turtles. So when the Isrealis found a turtle that was injured they thought of healing it. They didn't need it for food or medicine. But the Gazans are of a different religion and mind. Of course they did not tell the truth about the Israeli's not allowing food and medicine for their people. But the cruelty they committed with the endangered species turtle was that they tied it to a truck and dragged on it's back to wherever they were taking it. There lies the cruelty. They tortured the turtle before they killed it. Not even thinking that they are torturing a living thing. It's true that's their makeup unfortunately from the time they are born. Their people don't have to suffer hunger or a lack of medicine. It's all their doing. It's easy to blame it on others for the wrong they do. It's how they chose to do what they thought was beneficial for their people. The Israelis did not find any benefit from an injured turtle. So they healed it and sent it back to the sea I don't feel the comparison is a good one.

Teaching strategy to our enemies
I believe it is most important to publicize generally and particularly to Israelis, any and all incidences of released terrorists attempting to return to maim or murder innocent people whoever their would-be victims are. In this way we may come to the conclusion that it is sometimes preferable to sacrifice one specific Israeli life than put in jeopardy countless other Israelis or others. Our enemies are presently being taught to kidnap for human ransom and only by changing the lesson to read, 'If you capture one of ours we will consider him dead. If we recapture a terrorist we have released after he has attempted to murder, he will be given the death sentence by an IDF military court.'.
(65) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 7:38 PM
This exchange emboldens terrorists to commit more mayhem.
What sanctions should be enacted against those negotiators who have endangered Jews everywhere?
(64) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 7:24 PM
exchange
I think that the initial exchange deal was 2000 prisoners for Gilad. But the Palestinians didn't want too many of their own people back. Besides to the Palestinians 1 Israeli life equal to 1000 Palestinians is better than than 2000. How worthless can you get ? And 2000 would halve the worthlessness. What's a half of nothing ?

If i'm not mistaken,Hamas requested in 2006,the release of 1000 palastinian prisoners, for the release of Gilad Shalid. Why suddenly 5 years later the Israely goverenment agreed to release of 1000 prisoners,to free Gilad. Why not in 2006?????? so Mister Netanyahu must not think, that he made a very good deal,he could release Gilad 5 years ago!!

Proportionality
We always hear the loud voices of the so-called "Palestinian""victims" complaining about Israel's lack of respect for "proportionality" when responding to attacks by their neighbors. The exchange of Gilad Shalit for 1000 Arab murderers is the only true example I've seen recently of Israel's lack of respect for that so-called "principle". Can our Arab friends give us any similar examples from their side?

1000 to 1, the Israelis are the suckers
I think we miss the point with the question "why does the Arab world have so little respect for its own people that it thinks the life of one Jew is worth a thousand plus Arabs?" The point is that on the Arab side, the Israelis are seen as suckers. They release 1000 prisoners for 1. What happens next time if they kidnap 2? Or 4? Israel will quickly run out of prisoners to release and there will be thousands upon thousands of well trained, experienced terrorists on the streets of Gaza and the West Bank. Unfortunately, I have no other way to gain the release of someone who has been kidnapped, except for an Entebbe style rescue. However, there has to be a better way than being suckers.
(53) Esther Meyers, October 12, 2011 4:56 PM
great article, but a couple of disagreements
I have 2 problems with the arguments in the above article. 1. One can understand the argument the Gazans have about the sea turtles feeding their children - the truth or not. Lives are more important than endangered species. Unfortunately, it also makes the Israeli's letting the other turtle go seem as if they are more prosperous, true or not. Also, turtles aren't kosher and many wouldn't eat them anyway. 2. The Arabs are master negotiators and manipulators. Not asking for a 1:1 exchange does NOT mean that they value the lives any less, though other examples (suicide bombers) show they do. They know WE think 1 life is so important. Why shouldn't they get as many of their people freed as possible, taking advantage of our feelings? They were able to do more than we were, all at once. Why shouldn't they take full advantage? I highly doubt we, on the other hand, would have been able to successfully get 1,000, or even 2 of our people released in exchange for 1 Arab. That would prove they value each life so much less, and that their hatred for us far outweighs their love for their own.
(52) YH, October 12, 2011 4:49 PM
Food and medicine
Does the Torah see a problem in using animals for food and to cure ailments? Not at all. What is more apropos is "he who has mercy when he ought to be cruel, will be cruel when he ought to have mercy." Israel has had mercy time and again on its enemies and as a result, has been cruel to its own people. Kindness to Arab terrorists means cruelty to Jews. Sparing enemy civilians has meant the deaths of Israeli soldiers. This is despicable.

Arabs' heart is half-dead!
Arabs do not and are incapable, it seems, to understand what love is all about. Since the days of Ishmael they have nursed a hatred for their half brother that has killed half of their heart. And this hatred has grown into a monster where they even cannot love themselves and their children. The only love Arabs have is to exploit women for what they can get from them. They even marry many of them to exploit even farther this craving for women. Just check Mohammed's record!

This was expressed by one of my Jewish students
As a teacher in a Canadian public school years ago, I taught a cross-cultural class of at-risk teens. I asked the class which life had more value: the drug addict on the street, the most popular rock star, someone like Mother Theresa, or a single mother on welfare? Jordan, my only Jewish student, was the only student who said, "They are all equally important." It impacted me so much and I'll never forget him for that. Thanks for the Turtle story. I'm glad Gilad Shalit is finally home. If he were my son, I'd be so grateful that Israel went to so much trouble to get him back. Israel did the right thing. G-d will avenge for the pain the released prisoners have caused.

An Answer to Prayer
I have prayed for this young man since he was captured, and am so thankful to God that he is being released. It reminds me of the scripture Isaias 43:3. Thanking God for this joyous day for Gilad and his family.

God will bless Israel and will destroy all your enemies in that BIG DAY!

My daughter and I wear bracelets that say Free Galid Shalit written in English and Hebrew. We wish him and his family well.
(46) Manny, October 12, 2011 4:26 PM
Amen
Thanks to G-d at last Galid Shalit shall be free. Your coloumn is right on the money Rabbi, Muslims and Arabs should hide their faces in shame given the murderous uncaring and unkind ways of their present leadership. Thank you for that wonderful writing.

Freedom at Last!!
I am so thrilled that Gilad Shalit is being released. I hope that this will be the start of a wonderful life and may G-d help Gilad move on from the terrible ordeal he has been through.
(44) Mark Saint-John, October 12, 2011 4:23 PM
It is the right thing to do
Many times in our lives we pay a price that is beyond its value. There are many examples of nations frittering away its Diplomatic wealth in useless appeasement. In this case my heart was gladdened to hear Gilad was coming home. Hamas will celebrate a hollow victory upon the release of their people whilst Israel will celebrate the value of life. His release will give hope to members of those who defend Israel and the freedoms she stands for. The G-d of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, I believe, will be Joyous this day for Gilads life is far beyond the price of any terrorist no matter how many. May Our Mighty G-d Bless Him and Bless his people Israel.

I will breath easier when he is actually home with his family and then I can breathe easier. I guess our Yom Kippur Prayers really worked. Baruch Ashem!

An affirmation of the value of life...
this erudite commentary should be circulated throughout the world, amongst the secular as well as religious communities, and throughout the gentile as well as jewish world. Let the facts speak for themselves to help the world gain an honest perspective of what Israel is all about
(41) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 3:56 PM
Thank you for your e-mails
I am a parent, and I feel what Gilad Shalit parents feel... almost, I agree totally to release him: it is torture for his parents mostly! let him leave his life, the way Hashem planed it! It is meant to be like this! MAZEL TOV to Shalit's Family! keep well.I will read the story and I will donate for the Israeli children!
(40) marcia, October 12, 2011 3:48 PM
Beautiful Comparison
The world ignores the humanitarian deeds Israels does on a regular basis but G-d sees. I am so happy for Gilad's family. I cried when I read this, it touched my heart.

It's amazing how blind the rest of the world stil is!
Once again, the contrast between Arab radical Islam and Israeli mentality is so blatant. It's amazing how the rest of the world still and probably never will "get it"..until Moshiach comes! Great article!
(38) heshy, October 12, 2011 3:44 PM
an unfortunate truth
This is the unfortunate truth that we, as "the light of nations," face. Hashem put us here to show the goyim how to live and conduct ourselves even in the worst of circumstances. May we continue to be a source of kiddush Hashem, and may the time come soon that we will know no more sorrow from our enemies. Baruch Hatov v'Ha'meitiv!
(37) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 3:34 PM
sea turtles
While I agree with the contrast in the way they treat people, there is another factor in the different responses to the sea turtles: there is a vast economic disparity between gaza and Israel. Gazans are really hungry (due in no small part to unemployment stemming from an ineffective, radical, terroristic government), and it would have been a large sacrifice for them to release the turtle, while the Israelis could afford to release the sea turtle.

No Controversy Seen Here...
What a blessing this young man, one of our own, is able to come home. His Jewish life is priceless. There is no comparison between good and evil, therefore I can't see the controversy. There should be no guilt laid on him, his family or even the Jewish community, as a result of this "deal". It was the right thing to do. Within time those prisoners who are released and continue to choose the path of terrorism will be recaptured or killed as a result of their actions. Gilad on the other hand will never return into the hands of his captors. May G-d heal him and restore him mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually in total. Welcome home Galid! You are much loved.
(35) Perry, October 12, 2011 3:23 PM
Dignity...but:
"...the Jews of Israel have not only maintained their dignity, but have a created a thriving, productive, free, democratic and technologically advanced country..." The issue here is not OUR dignity, but how our neighbors, Islamist Muslims, perceive our actions. What they see is Israel who is willing to make ANY sacrifice to save one person's life. But in that they see our inherent weakness, one that they will surely exploit again, and again and again and again... Therein lies the great dilemma of our decency and I therefore ask the question: By acceeding to Hamas' demands to release 1027 terrorists, many with blood of Jews dripping from their hands like Marwan Barghouti, from prison, have we not told them that there are great dividends to be reaped from the kidnapping of Israelis? By releasing terrorists from our jails, have we not freed them to commit murders of more Israelis? How many lives will we lose in the future at the hands of the now-freed terrorists? How many innocent Jews will die in the future because of the price we paid to sane one?

Gilat Shalit
It has been a rough turbulent 5 yrs. plus awaiting for the release of this young IDF soldier..We have prayed much here in our Intercessors Lovers of Israel Group from the time we heard of his capture and the saddness that surrounded his buddies death.. We feel for the parents and family members..We have talked with IDF friends who have shared their hearts to us..The Knesset is between a rock and hard place when making tough decisions of releasing hard core violent killers over 1000 and now another off set deal being made..( I love the contrast you made regarding the 2 turtles it was an Excellent comparison) We are praying that the God Of Israel, is watching intently to all that is happening and we pray for His hand of protection on all Israelis.. It is at this wonderful time of celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles may our Israelis draw on the strength that Abba Father Our Lord, Our Creator and Know Him in a real and Personal Way.. Do you think they care?
The article is great, but if you think the international community cares about the Jews, think again. Germany has won and now thriving, France is Arab and so are the Scandinavian countries, all the others are Jew-haters. We, as usual, are alone. Hag Sameah.

Life
Bravo! I have many friends here in the US that were critical of the prisoner exchange compromises for Gilad. May I just say that God will bless the people of Israel for this decision. There is no military or strategic gain for Israel in regard to Hamas. Simply the return of a beloved Countryman who finally sees the land and people he loves. My prayers are with you Israel. May the Lord bless you and make His face to shine upon you.
(30) Andy, October 12, 2011 2:53 PM
trying to put a positive spin on what many believe is a display of weakness
"The first question the International community should really be asking is why does the Arab world have so little respect for its own people that it thinks the life of one Jew is worth a thousand plus Arabs?" How foolish is that statement! Do you think it would have been wise for them to exchange one for one. Of course Hamas will negotiate the best deal it can from Israel, and that has nothing to do with what they believe a life is worth. If Israel had been able to get Shalit for less it would have done so. I am thrilled for Gilad Shalit and his family. I suspect this deal entails much more than we know[I SURE HOPE SO], but even so it seems to be a victory for Hamas and for the use of terror as an effective force against a a more powerful adversary. Hamas can rightfully state; see what we just accomplished while all the talking with Israel by Fatah over the years has achieved nothing tangible.
(29) Gregory, October 12, 2011 2:52 PM
Arabs Value of themselves
You write "why does the Arab world have so little respect for its own people that it thinks the life of one Jew is worth a thousand plus Arabs?" They don't. They see this as an opportunity to get 1,000 terrorist Arabs freed. For some reason, this brings to mind the sign on a business that said "We would rather do business with 1,000 terrorists than with one Jew". And underneath that, the name of the company: "Goldberg's Funeral Home". I'll leave you at that.

Who will be the next victim? The question is not if - but who.
Wow ! This really paid off for the Hamas! Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that A. there will be more hostages, and that B. these 1000 (!) terrorists will go right back to terrorizing us?? Who in their right mind could approve of such a crazy deal? Especially considering what the author wrote - that we Jews value Life! Is one life worth more than the tens or hundreds that are next on line God forbid ? This deal is not allowed according to Jewish Halacha because of the danger that all Israeli Jews will face now. Pidyon Shvuyim also has its conditions - one being that it will not encourage further trouble. Gilad Shalit should have been released in operation Cast Iron, we should not have left Gaza without him. We should have had the situation such that they would have begged us to take him and leave them alone! They would have learnt their lesson then. This way - we are teaching them that terror pays off, and who knows if next time God forbid - 1000 terrorists will be enough for one Israeli soldier! And no one should think for one moment that I don't care about Gilad Shalit and his family. I care very much, and my heart is broken for them too. I just expect the Israeli govenment to look at the whole picture from a higher place and to reach their decisions based on intelligence and not on feelings and pressure from the media. May Hashem help us all.

At Loggerheads
WOW! There is such joy in knowing Gilad Shalit is being released. The GLAD in Gilad. This makes me happy, despite the totally unequal nature of such an exchange, which is very painful and rife with issues that are ethical and filled with angst. But I will go with the JOY and I think this is a very deep article about love itself. It's Sukkot. Let us be joyful that Shalit is being returned. And that we do value the life of every single ONE because we're all in this together, all ONE, and each individual represents the entirety. One loving soul. As to that loggerhead, I was shocked at the differences in perception. I think in the very least, we must pause, when an animal is slaughtered, no matter what, and I totally respect the rehabilitation of this turtle, and what was written, that is so much about how love is and can be expressed in such differing ways.

Danger ahead!!!
Releasing terrorists including murderers sends a terrible message to our friends & foes. It sets a dangerous precedent that kidnapping, acts of terror, & murder are rewarded!
(24) Lenny, October 12, 2011 2:28 PM
Wrong decision
While Gilad Shalit's family celebrates, let the blood of the next thousand Jewish victims of Arab kidnappings be on their heads. Israel has given in once again and this will continue. This deal was made in violation of Torah law which would prohibit putting other people in danger to rescue one person. May the blood be on all your heads and may you, and not the innocent people who didn't make this decision, suffer the consequences.
(23) Alex Troy, October 12, 2011 2:26 PM
nice sentiment, weak logic
How many Israelis will be harmed at the hands of the thousand terrorists who will be released? In light of the high likelihood that innocents will die does Israel really show its love of life by making such a trade?

Not only can we expect more kidnappings, but the released Palestinians will return to their ways of murdering innocent Israelis
(20) Bill A, October 12, 2011 2:21 PM
Truth never spoken so plainly as this story!
In essence, and in heart, the entire perspective of the conflicts between Isreal and its detractors has not ever been put so clearly: Israel values life, and Golda Meir probably the best embodiment of the 20th Century by her own concise observation. Barbarism thrives when one's own child is abused as a human shield; I pray the world wake up and see who stands for life and who crouches in wait to wipe life off the face of the earth. We know it is torah and practice to teach the sanctity of life, how it is from G-d; however we ourselves must practice educating the world that all which takes life by force and avarice is the very antithesis of what many 'peace' negotiations have produced to date. Maybe it's our 'fatalist' nature that knows at the heart one cannot give in to world demands that just 63 years ago recognized the plight and the rivers of blood which finally restored the Jewish homeland. The L-rd gaveth, and they who scowl are determined to take it all away. Without Israel the world falls into terrible darkness; history must teach and people must never forget.
(19) Michele, October 12, 2011 2:18 PM
Will Gilad be returned alive or will they return a corpse? Does anyone know for sure that Gilad is still alive?
(18) Frank Adam, October 12, 2011 2:16 PM
Consequences?
Do not be surprised when this is over if several of the released Palestine assassins and their directors find themselves on the wrong end of their own doctrines and shot resisting arrest next time Israel feels obliged to cross into Area 'A' or Gaza. When the "plaster saints" object as they have to the assassination of Al Awalki for "treason against the US" we can cite first the US v. Al Awalki precedent, then enquire how the saints intend to compel the traitors and assassins to present themselves in court for open trial under due process before a judge and jury?

the value of life
regardless of this, no arab and few gentiles care...it seems to be a widely accepted idea that there are jewish civilians in israel, as there were no civilian jews in europe in 1939....

One moment is like a thousand years.Bravo Netanyahu!
We have just brought down an abundance of Kiddushah erev Sukkot. Just as we are protected at this time in Hashem's Hands, so shall we be protected from those exchanged for Gilad in the future..Such a small price!
(15) Calvin Kieffer, October 12, 2011 2:09 PM
MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY OF GILAD SHALIT THEY MUST BE CELABRATING NOW. IT DOESN'T SHOCK ME THAT THEY EXCHANGED 1000 ARIBS FOR GILAD SINCE THEY PUT NO VALUE ON LIFE THEY WOULD RATHER DIE THAN LIVE
(14) Anonymous, October 12, 2011 2:01 PM
Until Gilad is back home safe in the arms of his parents I am still a bit concerned that they won't come up with something else. They cannot be trusted.
(13) Chaiah Schwab, October 12, 2011 1:57 PM
This sums up my feelings, but...
But what does halacha (Torah law) say? Are we allowed to make prisoner exchanges when past experience has shown the released muderers will murder once again? (r"l - "G-d have mercy") How can we pray that th released prisoners should THIS time go home and never harm us again, when this has been shown to be just wishful thinking? Yet, I was part of the "free Gilad' mvement, hoping that Isreal could find him and do an "Entebbe" rescue. Now we can only hope he is still sound in mind, soul and body afer his ordeal, and, yes, I'll pray for a miracle, that the released prisoners will not harm anyone... It is a Chag Sameach (happy holiday) for all of us, yet, it is "Gilu b'r'ada" (rejoice in trembling), this erev Sukkos. Thank you to Ken Spiro for all his excellent teaching. (I was priviledged t hear him speak in Cincinnati many years ago!)
(12) abi, October 12, 2011 1:54 PM
Interestingly enough, Gianlorenzo Bernini, the Italian artist, has compared Jews to turtles on more than one occasion. Great article!!!!
(11) Maria Reed, October 12, 2011 1:54 PM
Farther God we thank you for watching over Shalit's life and the out come that many have prayed for, you have given him back to his family, and Israel once again can hold her head up high for her humanity towards those who are her enemy, may God bless Shalit and bless the nation of israel .
(10) J. Spitz, October 12, 2011 1:51 PM
Setting a poor precedent
Yes indeed we value life more than the Arabs. However, these one-sided deals with terrorists will only encourage similiar cross-border raids and hostage taking. We gave them Gaza and all we got in return were bombs and missles launched from Gaza. What about future Israeli families that will suffer from future hostage-taking, once the Arabs see how "successfull" they were with the Gilad Shilat hostage-taking? Or, will we see the prisoners, many of whom were serving life sentences in Israeli prisons, return to Israel as suicide bombers, or conduct more terrorist operations that will destroy many lives? It simply sets a terrible precedent.
(9) judith, October 12, 2011 1:47 PM
No turtle comparison here!
No Ken, there is no comparison between Netanyahu's decision to release 1000 prisoners with the turtle story you related. Netanyahu has weakened Israel in the eyes of its enemies by proving to them that terrorism against Israelis pay. My prime minister's capitulation to terrorists will prove to be a deadly one to Israels.

Beautifully said, touching
Kenny -- I'm Shani's English friend, Tanya, and we met our year in Israel! This article is beautifully written and touched my heartstrings. Happy and Sad at Same Time
I am happy for Gilad's pending release, and sad that although this will be politically good for the present corrupt Israeli government and his family, it will bring many more terrorist attacks and Jewish injuries and death. I cannot tell someone else what to do under such circumstances, but if I were in his situation, and knew that I was going to exchanged for 1000 terrorist, I would say the Shema, sanctify G-d's name, and kill myself. A soldier must always be ready to sacrifice his life for his people and country.
Anonymous, October 13, 2011 10:04 PM
---very easy to say from the comfortable sofa you sit on. To kill oneself after sanctifying the name of G-d is no different than that of a suicide bomber. There are sacrifices but there are limits as well. How dare you heap guilt on Gilad for wanting his freedom.
(5) Fiona CAPSTICK, October 12, 2011 1:38 PM
Jews choose life
The Hebrew toast - L'Chaim - is the only one I know of in any language that speaks directly of 'LIFE". The expression describes in two words the very essence of Judaism. Nobody should be surprised at the value placed ion Gilad Shalit's life and the extraordinary measures taken to secure his release. To the critics of Israel and enemies of Israel - GET A LIFE will you!!!!
(4) just me, October 12, 2011 1:34 PM
the price
we all know how huge the price is and where the exchange can lead us. but.. who are we to measure the pain of Gilad's parents? what would any of us NOT give to save the loved ones, G-d forbid to be in this situation? so knowing how hard making the decision was i praise Israeli government for the humanity. Hag Sukkot Sameah to all:)

(2) michael lefkoiwtz, October 12, 2011 1:33 PM
Rabbi Spiro--well articulated. I am also torn about the deal to free Gilad. Jews are required to be a "light unto the nations", and valuing a life ia a most cherished Jewish value. On the other hand, Moishe Rabbeinu, looked "Koh, V'Koh". Undoubtedly, we know with almost 100% certainty/probability that upon the release of the 1000 prisoners, the likelihood of Jews being maimed or Chas V'Salom killed is great. May The Almighty watch over all of us!
(1) Rabbi Kalman Packouz, October 12, 2011 1:01 PM
If Israel values life it would not release 1027 murders to kill more people.
If Israel values life it would not release 1027 murders to kill more people. My heart goes out to the Shalit family for their suffering and I rejoice in their joy of having their son back, but perhaps they and the State of Israel should have followed the example of Maharam Rotenberg, the leading rabbi of his generation, who refused to be ransomed for an extreme amount because it would encourage our enemies to take hostage more Jews. He spent 7 years in jail until he died. Hopefully, we will not have to suffer more in the future for the price we pay to rejoice now.
