I’m Not a German; I’m a Jew: A Passover Video

Why do we celebrate that in every generation enemies will try to eradicate the Jews?

It was a very emotional video and it had me in tears.

German or Jew

I think when people settle in a country, they try their best to become part of their society. Think about it, when you come to America, you become an American, and I am sure when you go to Germany, you become German. If we treat people fairly, then this shouldn't be a problem. But when you have a hate monger like Hitler and others, then they don't think these rules apply. Its a dirty shame we live in such a narrow minded world, and simply accept people no matter what their background or where they have come from!

What can you say but thank god for Israel!

My generation will never forget and I hope that new generations will as well!

Can't Trust the Neighbours

After the murder of Jews in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Jews and non-Jews held a vigil in my small town. It is a sad fact that decent non-Jews, in the end, don't matter much. It is also a sad fact that HaShem did NOT save about ONE THIRD of us. This world is a jungle. We all know the law of the jungle: kill or be killed. It was always true, for Jews, for Cherokees, for any minority. I sing vehi she-amda too, but I don't expect supernatural help in staying alive.

Video is at first chilling, then powerful and finally comforting. Thank you for the reminder in whom we have to trust and believe.

Thank you so much for this video!

Hi there,

My name is Meira Malka from Johannesburg South Africa, I am a high school student and am part of a program called WordWatch.

WordWatch is a nightly teleconference run by teenagers, for teenage girls from around the world aimed at bringing Ahavas Yisroel and Shmiras Halashon to Klal Yisrael. As of now, we have 18 countries involved, almost 70 hosts and hundreds of girls calling on.

I came across this video of Rabbi Ari Bensoussan and was amazed. It was incredibly inspiring, powerful and had such a strong message. I decided to play it on my conference last night and Baruch Hashem, everyone loved it! I've got messages from girls saying how powerful it was and I just wanted to thank you for such incredible content.

With you and behind you

My mother was German. Her best friend throughout her life was a Jew. My best childhood friends are Jewish. I stick up for Israel, big way. So, please feel comforted that there are exceptions to Kristalnacht behaviour (and the abominable rest)

Great video

I remember the first time I heard Rabbi Ari Bensoussan was about 5 years ago or so when he spoke at a Tisha B'Av event. He said the same thing about that woman that he saw on a video at Yad Vashem. The way he imitated her voice, how he described the scene that she remembered that Krystalnacht night, was so moving and inspiring, I said it over to friends and I never forgot it. She came to the conclusion that "we were not Germans, we were Jews." Unforgettable. I watch Rabbi Bensoussan on Torah Anytime all the time. Kol Hakovod. May you go from strength to strength.

It is SO special to be a Jew! Believe me! I have first-hand experience in the difference between being a Jew and not being a Jew! Hashem is ALWAYS with us! Thanks for the inspiring video! Right before Pesach!

What do they have against us?

We are reviled by the nations because we demonstrate the ethical values that they know they should live by as well. They will never accept their failure and we are the eternal reminder.

Stop the Denial

Just as German Jews denied the antisemitism around them, so do American and European Jews deny what is happening today. We all wonder, "How could the European Jews of the 1930's have been so blind?" and yet American Jews remain in place. I urge any thinking Jew to come Home to Israel while you can. What are you waiting for??

Why no warnings in advance even today

Why look to the past if we are to learn nothing from it! The warnings are there throughout the Torah and Talmud, warnings about paganism and idolatry as the enemies of Judaism. Yet today where are the warnings about the international antisemitic New Age movement which has been growing since the early 1900s? Information is there but it is not being shared by leadership of either the secular or religious establishments. Was any group out to destroy Judaism and Jews completely open about their networks, their organizational connections, their beliefs, what the have already infiltrated, their governmental involvement? No. Without serious looking into what is going on we cannot know what we don't know. When someone says New Age is a nothing that has gone away they are only telling you that they don't know. Please talk among yourselves about the growth of paganism and idolatry in this country and everywhere and know that culture change comes before political change.

Excellent Video and Reminder

I am a longtime Aish subscriber and this is the first time that I have commented on a video. This really resonated with me. My parents were both born in Austria and are both Holocaust Survivors. My siblings and I were told time and again over and over from my parents that they too thought that they were “Austrian’s first” only to find out that that was not true. This video is an excellent reminder for those that live in the US and take our freedom for granted that being an American does not guarantee anything. Thank you for this video — an important reminder before Passsover.

Confusing message

German is a nationality
Jew(ish) is a religion

Why is it necessary to continue to conflate them?

David, April 9, 2019 4:57 PM

Why indeed?

Leaving aside the question of whether Judaism is a nationality as well as a religion, it was pretty clear that, as far as the Germans were concerned, the Jews were not, in fact, Germans. Surprise, surprise.

Dvirah, April 9, 2019 4:58 PM

Seek Deeper

Judaism is much more than a religion. It is an inheritance, a mission, a lifestyle and a national identity. It only looks like a religion to the uninitiated.

Anonymous, April 9, 2019 6:14 PM

very tru

Thank you for sharing your experience Rabbi.
I am agreed with Dvirah, Judaism is much more than a religion, just look around and see how many Anusim Jews are coming back, even after centuries, we have the call, our souls are always been Jews and will always be.

The Promise

HaShem is calling us to Return. To Torah, to Emunah.

I have heard this point of view before, from the video, that anti-semitism is a gift from HaShem to wake us up to return to Him.

Anti-semitism is rising at an alarming rate, is it the left who Trump says are anti-Jewish, (at a Jewish rally of the right they sang Dayenu to him, over the weekend, his greatness in all he has done with moving the embassy and the Golan announcement) is it the anti-Semites on college campuses that criticize the modern state of Israeli policies of settlement building, occupation, the Palestinians, promoting BDS, is it the white nationalists, who chant the Jews won't replace us ?

In every generation, there will be those that seek to annihilate us. Vehi Sheamda.

We are in exile, and our Promise is to keep Mitzvot, Torah sustains us, HaShems's promise is to redeem us, He alone is our Salvation.

This video made me very sad.
