How About Ignoring a Gossiper..

"I saw your sister the other day and she looked worried. I heard she and her husband are having some financial trouble". - - - - - First of all that is a terrible insensitive thing for anybody to say to you! - - - BUT, It is not up to you to comment about your sisters private or family issues, whether pro or con. Your answer could be, My sister is well thank you for asking. Or you could ignore the statement, and change the subject. Or, my favorite and easiest is.... simply keep your lips sealed and look directly at the person who made the statement and give no reply whatsoever. The Rabbis here on Aish.com have plenty of good advice in dealing with the gossip of a rude person.

To Commenter #4 Susan E.

I like your idea of ignoring the gossiper. Yes, it certainly is QUITE insensitive to make comments about a loved one's private issues. I have a third suggestion for dealing with such an insensitive individual. You could also look at your watch and exclaim: "I had no idea what time it is. I simply must go." Then walk away from that person. We have no obligation to be mistreated by ANYONE.

The actual word "gossip"

When you pronounce the word gossip, it sounds as if you are hissing like a snake. The laws regarding lashan hara are fascinating and IMO they are deceptively simple. Why are they deceptively simple? I say that because perhaps people have committed lashan hara without even realizing it. When I say "people," I certainly include myself here. When I was a child and an adolescent I unfortunately engaged in far too much lashan hara. I am proud to say this is no longer the case. OTOH--I remain vigilant and sensitive when it comes to my speech. Thank you so much Lori Palatnik. I look forward to the rest of this series!! :-) :-) Let me also thank you once again for the close captioning. It is a true mitzvah!!
