there is a better time for this

This is a grreat commentary. It would be even more appropriate given before families are deciding what college is right for them.

Jewish communities are not always the most affordable

As my husband and I look toward our empty-nest/retirement years, things do matter, like the affordability of the community, public transportation (I am disabled and can't drive), and, yes, the weather. It's easy to laugh it off if you aren't in our situation.

We have great shopping in Israel--especially when it comes to bride or groom shopping!

I made aliyah from Washington, D.C. in 1987. We have fantastic fruit and vegetable markets that put Shopper's Food Warehouse to shame! We have shopping malls and online shopping! (And who's to say you can't make an annual trek to T.J. Maxx and Marshall's when you visit the family in the USA?!) Weather wise--I don't get the complaint. If you value snow and ice over sunny skies, the Mediterranean Sea and swimming in the Sea of Galilee 9 months of the year, I guess you can say we have "lousy" weather in Israel... But the best shopping (and climate) in Israel is when your kids go "shopping" for spouses among the beautiful Jewish Israeli children who have arrived (or whose parents have arrived) from the Diaspora to become strong, proud Israelis. The best "shopping" is when you have to chose which of the 3-4 shuls on your block to pray in. And the best "climate" is that of the unity and love we expressed as Jewish Israelis as we prayed for our boys, Gil-Ad, Naftali and Eyal, of blessed memory, to return home. Life in Israel is challenging, but it's the Jewish Homeland--it even says it in the Torah! Come home to Israel--for the shopping, the climate and for living as a Free people in our own Land. How could you really consider any place else?
