What is the Jewish definition of heaven and hell and why isn't the afterlife mentioned the Torah?

Fabulous explanation of Heaven and Hell

Thank you Rabbi Aaron,

Your analogy describing Heaven and Hell was perfect, so simple and yet there is a depth that should still be explored.

Heaven and hell are real

If heaven and hell aren't the focus of religion, then you might as well throw God out of religion.
If your focus is to love a good life and then die, and disappear, well, it's what Karl Marx teaches. Communism. Where there's no God, no heaven, no hell. Only man.

A full life can be one of material success, and a happy family life and contentment but also one of travail, struggle, suffering for the good...not always a happy smiley journey but can be one of nobility, honor, virtue - many times persecuted and unrewarded but nonetheless heroic and meaningful.

The Tanach DOES teach there is a Hell

I beg to disagree with this video. The Tanach DOES teach there is a Hell - read Isaiah 66:23-24; Psalm 9:17 and Daniel 12:2. Not sure what Anonymous means by a "baptist hell" but the one described in the Tanach does not sound great.

You are both right...

When one is confronted with the discrepancy between what he has accomplished and what he COULD have accomplished, those feelings can be translated into terms of "worm," of "fire," of "stumbling," of "understanding."

At least I won't end up in the baptist hell. By all accounts, it is unpleasant.
