The High Holy Days are the time we begin to think of the unthinkable. Perhaps the most powerful phrase we recite in all of our prayers is the one that acknowledges that our days are numbered. “On Rosh Hashanah is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed – who will live and who will die.”
None of us want to believe we are mortal. We live our lives as if we will be around forever. We can't imagine our nonexistence and so we deny the possibility of our disappearance. We stubbornly persist in believing that we will somehow be the exception to the fate of all humankind.
But life has a way of forcing us to confront bitter truth.
My moment of truth came seven years ago. In what I assumed was to be just another annual physical exam, my doctor stunned me when he said he needed to give me some news that was not good. He asked me to sit in the waiting room until my wife could come to his office so that we could hear it together. An hour later he told us, “You have a disease for which there is no cure. It is fatal and the probability is that you have about six more months to live.”
You can't imagine the impact those words had upon my wife and me. Yet this happened seven years ago and I am still here. And remarkably, the diagnosis was not wrong. The doctor correctly saw that I suffered from cardiac amyloidosis. It is a hardening of the walls of the heart which progressively and rather quickly prevents it to continue its life-giving function. But somehow I am still here. The hardening stopped – without any medical explanation. The state it is in now allows me to function almost as if I have no problem.
Yes, it is a miracle. My doctor regularly attends conferences on amyloidosis and discusses me as an illustration of cases which inexplicably do not conform to medical expectations. Thank God, I have become a poster boy for what physicians consider an anomaly. But I believe I have an explanation. I am firmly convinced that my continued presence here on earth is a divine response to faith.
There was no specific medicine the doctor could offer me. And so I turned to an ancient response to sickness, to suffering and to the prospect of hopelessness.
Prayer doesn’t come to change God. It comes to change us – so that God will look at us differently.
My heart told me to pray. I joined a lengthy list of the most prominent of my ancestors who did precisely that when the world seemed to turn against them and their difficulties seemed insurmountable. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob prayed. Moses prayed. The prophets prayed. King David prayed – and composed Psalms which continue to stir us and bring us closer to God to this very day. Throughout all of history, from every corner of the globe, Kings and commoners, the meek and the mighty, the sinners and the saintly, turned to God for the kind of help only He is capable of granting.
I came to understand that prayer doesn’t come to change God. It comes to change us – so that God will look at us differently.
Prayer isn't about getting something; it's about being with Someone.
Prayer is the most important conversation of our day – because we take our problems to God before we take them to anyone else.
We talk to God in order to remind ourselves that we were created in His image – and therefore we have someone to look up to as our role model.
We talk to God because it gets us in touch with our soul and inspires us to become all that we can be.
We talk to God as a “timeout” from our obsession with possessions and our fixation with the foolish, to remind ourselves that we only become worthy of God’s blessings when we concentrate on His concerns for the holy and the sacred.
We talk to God because we are God’s children – and He loves to hear from us.
We talk to God because it reminds us to depend upon Him – that miracles happen but they are the divine response to those who believe in Him.
We talk to God because it gives us the chance to express ourselves completely to Him – to regularly have the most important talk of our lives with the one who can do the most to make our lives better and more meaningful.
Prayer is rooted in love. It strengthens our relationship with God. It alters the way we look at the world. It redefines our values. It shapes our character. It improves our personality.
That’s why prayer is always answered – sometimes with the words we want to hear, other times with the response we need to hear.
The medical prognosis was that I was soon to die. My prayers were a powerful source of personal comfort. They were also life-changing. My prayers first and foremost changed me. And then it seems that God decreed that the new me deserved some more time here on earth.
My prayers intensified to levels I never thought possible. I spoke to God as friend, as confidant, as the one to whom I entrusted the final decision of life or death with complete trust. I am alive to write these words today not simply because God answered my prayers but because my prayers proved life-changing for me. They achieved what prayer was meant to do and what is in fact the theme of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: to become a better person by reinforcing our awareness of God’s presence in every moment of our lives.
This awareness has suddenly assumed new meaning for me once again. I hope I am not asking God for too much by once more turning to him for another miracle as I cope with a new medical crisis. I am presently undergoing radiation to hopefully cure my newly found prostate cancer. Once more I place my trust in prayer. With the same “medicine” which served me so well in the past I will do what all of us will concentrate on doing these forthcoming High Holy Days.
May all of our prayers offered with sincerity, hope and faith be answered with the divine response of mercy and compassion of which only the Almighty is truly capable.
Please pray for the complete healing of Binyamin ben Gittel

Question of faith
Dear Rabbi Blech I am so happy that god saw to keep you alive. My question is we all know people after receiving a serious diagnosis that loved hashem Prayed to hashem with all their hearts and likewise trusted hashem to let them continue to live. They died though and I can’t understand what you did that they did not. I truly am happy for you but confused for my own life and understanding of hashem. Wishing you a happy and most healthy new year

Refuah Shleima for Rabbi Blech.
60 years ago, I was given one rabbi to introduce me to Jewish history, Yehadus, and how to be a Jew in my upcoming public school education and secular career. B"H Rabbi Blech was successful! I have k'neh all shomer mitsvot children, both sons are rabbis teaching Gemora, Chassidus, and are beloved and effective mashpiim, and over a dozen (no counting) brightly shining and learning grandchildren. I intend to make sure Rabbi Binyamin ben Gittel is mentioned at every Torah reading I attend. And I'm a shul regular.

Rebbe Par Excellence
Rabbi Blech, zol zein gezunt, without a doubt is the single most influential person in my life till today as I'm sure he is of countless others. His excitement, dynamism, and pure goodness shown through in every class, shiur and lecture he gave and continues to give is an inspiration to all those who were fortunate to be his student. There is no doubt in my mind why Hashem performed a miracle for him and will continue doing so until Moshiach comes. Refuah Shleima, Rebbe from just one of thousands of appreciative talmidim.

inspiring
Rabbi Bleich.
Thank you for displaying your vulnerability, that shows your strength.
Your story and your articles are inspiring and when Hashem looks down on Rosh Hashone he is sure to declare loud and clear.
WE NEED RABBI BLEICH, THE WORLD NEEDS HIM.
May you and your family have a Kesivo Vechasima Tova.
Rabbi yakov moshe the komarno Rebbi would repeat that he heard from the Magid of Trisk, that heard from the Tschernobler Rebbi the author of the sefer Meor Enayim, who repeated in the name of the Baal Shemtov that received this from his Rebbi Achiyo Hashilone. From the 15th of the month of Av until Rosh Hashone, yidden have the minhag to bless each other with a Kesiva vechasima tova, from each blessing gets created a Malach angel that will become a defender for him on Rosh Hashone. when Rosh Hashone arrives all those hundreds of blessings angels stand up to defend him for a kesivo vechasimo tova.

G-d Helps Those Who Help Themselves
My unsolicited advice is to eat a diet rich in omega 3's and antioxidants, while avoiding added sugars as much as possible. I recommend eating the healthiest diet in the world, known as pescatarianism, which consists of high omega 3 fish such as sardines and salmon, any and all vegetables, and healthy fats such as avocados, walnuts, and extra-virgin olive oil.
Raymond, September 21, 2019 1:28 PM
Addendum
Ooops, I neglected to mention some examples of the healthiest vegetables one should eat every day: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, and spinach. Also healthy, anti-inflammatory spices such as garlic powder, ginger, onion powder, red cayenne pepper, and turmeric.

Improving one's Health.
(@Raymond)- Who speaks about health issues and a better choice of foods)
If everyone would look at their own bodies in a mirror, and ask themselves this question: "Can my small Heart be expected to cope with this overweight mass of extra weight I am carrying, and have developed since age 30", and what am I going to do about it, then we might get somewhere. In my view heart disease is the easiest to almost cure, all you have to do is to flush just like a car radiator your veins and arteries, how you may ask? By drinking last thing at night ONE tablespoonful of Cider Vinegar in water to dilute and taste, 30 days later your veins will be in better condition, open and allowing blood to flow. Another health tip: Never eat burnt food especially burnt meat, if you're invited to a barbecue refuse to attend, if you doubt this then Google both subjects. One must ask "Why is the Jewish and non-Jewish Community so bedevilled by Cancer, the part-answer is how they over-cook (meaning over-heat) food in a gas or electric oven especially chicken, ."Over cooked burnt food causes cancer, likewise cooking oil changes its composition when overheated and this is a proven fact. Will cancer ever be defeated, the answer is no, there is thousands of toxic substances about, and everyone of them can enter the air we breathe, or the food we consume, or the goods we touch and use sometimes daily.
Raymond, September 23, 2019 5:31 AM
Apple Cider Vinegar
As it so happens, I add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the glasses of ice water that I drink. Every time I do so, it feels truly fantastic, both for my brain as well as for my body.

Underwent surgery October of last year. I developed a want to live. I’m now cancer free I’m no longer a diabetic, blood pressure is better Then normal. All this was done with deep devotion to G-D. And everything he did to make me see the derech Tasha’s. We should all be blessed with long life With the absolutely knowledge that I’m here because of GD

Thank you for giving me hope!
Dear Benjamin Blech, First of all i want to tell you that i am praying for you! May the Lord God Almighty the Great I AM grant you more time in this world so you can go on to be His vessel and bless others as you have blessed me ! I am very grateful for the hope you gave me! For some time i am in a very difficult situation and trying desperate to get back home to the men that loves me and that i love but Canadian immigration won't let me because i am not divorced yet from a men that abused me badly for almost 15 years. Living on the run and hide for more than 7 years and my ex still trying to find me and get me back! But i do take a lot of strength out of the fact that my ancestors survived the Nazi's so since i am comming from a line of survivors i surly shall survive too! My ex can't be worse than them! Sadly i grew up in a family that has turned away from faith and never been teached in the traditions but the Lord found me and lead me to a men that is faithful to Him through this men i found faith and i do get a lot of strength out of king David's writings. I do pray every day for the miracle to get this divorce and that immigration will let me get back home to the men that saved my life and showed me the way to the Lord! Surely the Lord has not get me this far to abandon me now! Even i have no living family and i am all alone except for God. God shall provide in all my needs! I do trust Him and love Him no one can take that away from me! God will lead me on this journey closer to Him and heal me from the post traumatic stress syndrome i got from the abuse i had. If anyone feels to bless me with a prayer or encouraging word's i will be most grateful. Thank you ☺

Dear Rabbi Blech,
Shalom shalom. I met you and your family at the Homowack many moons ago. I spoke to your son while ice skating. Please try chapparral herb available from vegiheal.com. Also, eat beets steamed in stainless steel, with lemons squeezed in once the stove is off. Also, eat watermelon. Stay away from meat, milk (only low fat if consumed), and microwave No sugar or fried. Don't ask the Dr. about chapparral b/c the medical profession pulled it off the market since it was so effective (and inexpensive). It's a marvel. Consider it like eating a tomato. Also look into Maxi Prostate Plus from Ethical Nutrients. May you be blessed with a refuah shlayma bkorov and a shana tova umetuka! May we all soon behold the geula!

BRAVO! Another miracle or not, you know Who is Master.
Your words resounded in my heart. It was as if I was recounting my miracle, albeit a different angle. At 41 y/O I suffered a massive stroke, I was healthy, very healthy just being retired from the US Army. The story is long and WONDERFUL, but I will condense it. The stroke occurred in my Basalar artery in my brain. It was completely blocked, the angiogram clearly showed no blood, therefore no oxygen flowing to my brain. Video evidence. The neurosurgeons told my family they could not explain why I was conscious and talking when I should not be breathing. Also I was misgiagnosed at two other hospitals before the third got it right and sent me to a stroke center the next day. At this point I am nearing 48 hours in this condition. I was told that I would either live or die when they did surgery. I had to say good-bye to my family before I went in. I sob right now even as I type. I had to learn to walk again among a myriad of other problems. Even as I recovered and prayed everyday I was very mad at God. For nearly two years the words, "I wish I was dead" came out of my mouth more times a day than I care to remember. I could never take my own life because I know it is not mine to take. I looked forward to the day I die. One morning while having "coffee with God" (I actually poured Him a cup and talked) I had my Job moment. God did not show up personally, nor did I hear a Booming Voice from above. But, it might as well have been like that. I could only concentrate on when God questioned him as to his whereabouts when He created the Universe. Also, I replied, "No, in fact, I do not want to wrestle a Leviathan". The message was clear, Only God determines our end and our beginning. My life is truly extraordinary filled with many miracles. I'm now the proud owner of one spoiled Granddaughter.
