"As the Stars of Heaven," 2015, acrylic on canvas, 125 x 100 cm.

God, your Lord, has increaed your numbers until you are [now] as many as the stars of the sky. May God, the God of your fathers, increase your numbers a thousandfold, and bless you, as He promised. (Deuteronomy 1:10-11)

In this deceptively simple painting, with its bold coloring created by fingers dancing joyfully in the paint, the people gather to hear Moses' final message before crossing into the Land of Israel. In the white middle ground, the domed and zigzagged shapes, some with hints of human figures, suggest the tents in which the Children of Israel dwelt during the forty years in the desert. At the top of the painting a deep, rich, ultramarine expanse has drops of golden-yellow, suggesting the multitudes of stars to which the Children of Israel are compared. After the painting seemed finished, Raanan collaged on an extra canvas, adding a third to the height of the work and giving the expanse of sky a feeling of wonder, depth, and awe.
