Vayelech (Deuteronomy 31 )

"Hakhel" (Gathering), 2015, acrylic on canvas, 70 x 90 cm.

At the end of seven years, at a fixed time on the festival of Sukkot ... when all Israel comes to present themselves before God, your Lord...You must read from this Torah before all Israel ... and they must hear it... Gather together the nation ... and let them hear it. (Deuteronomy 31:10-12)

Throngs of people in joyous purples and reds stand united before the Tent of Meeting, the Mishkan, which looks like a majestic sukkah. Its curtains hang transparent and open on all sides to a white light that shines onto the heads of the gathered people, crowning them with radiance. This image reflects the view that the Mishkan was like a mobile Mount Sinai continuing the revelation among the people - a kind of perpetual reenactment of the giving of the Torah. (Ramban) Within the Tent of Meeting we see purple figures of the Kohanim, who were commanded to read the Torah to the assembled populace at this rare and significant ceremony of Hakhel (Gathering).
