Expelled: How One Kind Act Changed Lives

Isaac was about to get expelled from school until one student's kind act changed everything.

I was paying a shiva call to the family of Eli Price. Hundreds of community members poured into the home to express their condolences to Eli’s family, and a stranger walked in.

The man introduced himself as Isaac and he said he was the principal of a school located in a neighboring city. He then told the following story to the family.

“When I was in middle school, I was the troublemaker and always misbehaved in class. I got sent to the principal’s office almost every day. One day, when I was once again bored in class, I threw an aluminum foil ball at the teacher. With a bright red angry face, the teacher lifted the ball and said, ‘I will ask only once for the student who threw this to please stand up and walk out of the room. I will not continue class until that student leaves.’

"The room was silent. I was not going to give myself up. I had been warned by the principal that if I acted out again, I would be expelled from school. I never imagined what would happen next. After 30 long seconds, a boy named Eli, who was always a diligent and well-behaved student, stood up and walked out of the room with his head down. He had no reason to help me but he decided to anyway.”

Isaac wiped his tears and said, “I want you to know that Eli saved my life. Through that selfless act, he conveyed to me how concerned he was about my dignity. That shook me up. From that moment on, I took my life more seriously. With a lot of work, I stopped being a trouble maker.

"When I heard that Eli passed away, I had to come here to let you all know that if I've touched people’s lives through my work as a Jewish educator, it's all due to Eli's compassion and selflessness.”

There are times in life when we are faced with a choice. We can move ahead for our own sake or we can sacrifice to help someone else. When we take advantage of the opportunity to help others, as Eli did, we never know the impact that it may have. But it's in these defining moments that we have the potential to change someone’s life.

Re: The root of Isaac's behavior

Yes, Eli certainly sounded like a mensch. However, did anyone at Isaac's school try to find out why Isaac was exhibiting such maladaptive behaviors? Expulsion from school is a VERY serious matter, and it sounds like the administration just wanted this child out of their hair.
