Capatain Sully and Shemot

B"H It was amazing to see what Captain Sullenberger was able to do to save lives. I went to a Shul right by the George Washington Bridge, and that Shabbat, the Rabbi spoke at length about Parashat Shemot, when Moses is commanded by HaShem to lead the Hebrews to safety, to spiritual purity, their Redemption. Moses had to wonder indeed, if he could face such a daunting task! I thought to myself that that very week not far from where I was davening by the Hudson River, we had just witnessed the start of humankind's Redemption, as all 150 people of all nationalities, ethnic groups, economic strata, and races, had been saved. Rabbi Yaakov Cohen is from Yeshiva University, certainly very close to the events of that January 2009 day on the Hudson. In fact, planes from LaGuardia airport -where Captain Sully took off- fly right over Yeshiva University. Rabbi Cohen's video stresses kindness, others, our giving and sharing and caring, from the lessons learned as Sully the captain lead his people to safety. Indeed, Chessed is a powerful key to Redemption for the Jewish people, for humanity. Rabbi Cohen emphasizes this, beautifully, and connects events, and places! Parshat Shemot, an idea whose impact started with HaShem commanding Moses, and got wrapped up at least for me, that 15th January 2009, not far from Yeshiva University and my own Shul.

Nice story but many pilots would have crashed regardless of inspiration

Thank You

The topic of pain and challenges is not discussed as much as it should be. I understand it- people want the positive, feel-good content. But, really, the only way a person can feel good and become happier is by aknowledging that there is pain and, if channeled properly- can bring us to change people's lives.
Thank you aish.com for recognizing this need and for helping us through our challenges.

Knowing that a flight will only last for minutes and that a crash is the only outcome a captain is only weighing all possibilities and looking for the best outcome in an extreme situation. Luck put him is reach of the river and that is the only reasonable choice. Skill, experience and intelligence guided his landing, which was perfect. A water landing is not easy on a non water plane. One is to busy calculating and recalculating every decision, no time to think about anything else, period. Been there.

Faith and training

If you were inspired by this short video, you should read his biography. It is just amazing how his past trainings and faith in higher power helped him during this absolute miracle.

Relationship of Trust

A relationship of trust with God Almighty allows the Spirit of God to do great things through us. Just as Captain Sully partnered with God and used his skill as a pilot to save the lives of the passengers, we can also partner with God to do His work here on planet Earth. Great inspirational video with an excellent narrator.

Something to remember

This is surly a memorable experience and the Jewish lesson at the end was inspirational. He has a great, clear speaking voice for the video. In any situation, God will never leave us, nor forsake us.
