what it's like to be broken

Can people who've never experienced brokenness themselves, firsthand, really help those of us who are living with chronic pain, depression, insomnia, anxiety, long term effects of trauma, brain injuries, disabilities, poverty, alienation, etc.? They say you have to walk a mile in someone's shoes before you really know what they're going through, don't they?
